Book EmDrive

Download or read book EmDrive written by Roger Shawyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EmDrive provides a comprehensive description of the theoretical background of this emerging technology. It includes the derivation of the essential equations, provides full thruster design details, and describes the manufacture and methods of testing that would enable the work to be correctly reproduced in the appropriate research facilities. Electromagnetic drive is a proposed method of propulsion that does not require a propellant, although it still requires fuel. It holds the potential to revolutionize renewable energy production, clean and quiet transport, and global climate control. Having evolved from numerous individual and organizational contributions, this book explains the origin and subsequent development of this theory from the original UK government requirement. The sequence of experimental devices is covered in detail, and the subsequent test results are discussed. Similar programmes in the USA and China are introduced, and the implications of recent disclosures are considered. This book will interest industry professionals working on electromagnetic theory and experimental physics in the fields of aerospace and energy engineering.

Book Cold Hibernated Elastic Memory Structure

Download or read book Cold Hibernated Elastic Memory Structure written by Witold M. Sokolowski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cold hibernated elastic memory (CHEM) is an innovative, smart material technology that uses shape memory polymers in open cellular structures. This book extensively describes CHEM self-deployable structures, provides basic property data and characteristics, discusses advantages, and identifies numerous space, commercial, and medical applications. Some of these applications have been experimentally and analytically investigated with inspiring results and are revealed here. CHEM technology has a potential to provide groundbreaking self-deployable space structures. Some cutting-edge space CHEM concepts described in this book represent the introduction of a new generation of space deployable structures. CHEM materials have unique characteristics that enable the manufacture of self-deployable stents and other medical devices not possible currently. One of the medical applications, the CHEM endovascular treatment of aneurysm, is being experimentally explored with promising results that would save lives. This book provides a long list of interesting potential commercial CHEM applications that could simplify and make life easier at low cost. One of these products, the self-reconfiguring armchair, is already being set up for mass production. This book will be of interest to all engineering researchers, scientists, engineers, students, designers, and technologists across their relevant fields of interest. The exceptional characteristics of CHEM technology are presently enabling technologists to develop many applications ranging from outer space to inside the human body. As a result, CHEM structures are in the process of reshaping our thinking, approaches, and design methods in many ways that conventional materials and approaches do not allow.

Book Structural Dynamics Experimental Activities in Ultra lightweight and Inflatable Space Structures

Download or read book Structural Dynamics Experimental Activities in Ultra lightweight and Inflatable Space Structures written by Richard S. Pappa and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports recently completed structural dynamics experimental activities with new ultra-lightweight and inflatable space structures (a.k.a., "Gossamer" spacecraft) at NASA Langley Research Center, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Nine aspects of this work are covered: 1) inflated, rigidized tubes, 2) active control experiments, 3) photogrammetry, 4) laser vibrometry, 5) modal tests of inflatable structures, 6) in-vacuum modal tests, 7) tensioned membranes, 8) deployment tests, and 9) flight experiment support. Structural dynamics will play a major role in the design and eventually in-space deployment and performance of Grossamer spacecraft. Experimental research and development such as this is required to validate new analysis methods.

Book The Design and Construction of Large Optical Telescopes

Download or read book The Design and Construction of Large Optical Telescopes written by Pierre Bely and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-01-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no dearth of books on telescope optics and, indeed, optics is clearly a keyelementinthedesignandconstructionoftelescopes.Butitisbynomeans the only important element. As telescopes become larger and more costly, other aspects such as structures, pointing, wavefront control, enclosures, and project management become just as critical. Although most of the technical knowledge required for all these ?elds is available in various specialized books, journal articles, and technical reports, they are not necessarily written with application to telescopes in mind. This bookisa?rstattemptatassemblinginasingletextthebasicastronomicaland engineering principles used in the design and construction of large telescopes. Itsaimistobroadlycoverallmajoraspectsofthe?eld, fromthefundamentals ofastronomicalobservationto optics, controlsystems, structural, mechanical, andthermalengineering, aswellasspecializedtopicssuchassiteselectionand program management. This subject is so vast that an in-depth treatment is obviously imprac- cal. Our intent is therefore only to provide a comprehensive introduction to the essential aspects of telescope design and construction. This book will not replace specialized scienti?c and technical texts. But we hope that it will be useful for astronomers, managers, and systems engineers who seek a basic understanding of the underlying principles of telescope making, and for s- cialists who wish to acquaint themselves with the fundamental requirements and approaches of their colleagues in other disciplines.

Book excerpt: A lawless wilderness. A polished court. Individual fates, each on a quest to expose a system of corruption. The desolate canyons of Alcoro—and the people desperate enough to hide there—couldn’t be more different from the opulent glass palace and lush forests of Moquoia. But the harsh desert and gleaming court are linked through their past, present, and future: a history of abductions in the desert to power Moquoia’s quarries and factories, and a bleak, inhumane future built on the sweat and sacrifice of these bond laborers. But events unfolding in the present could change everything. In the desert, outlaw Lark—known to most as the Sunshield Bandit—has built a name for herself attacking slavers’ wagons and freeing the captives inside. But while she shakes the foundation of Moquoia’s stratified society, she also has to fight to protect her rescuees—and herself—from the unforgiving world around them. In the Moquoian court, young ambassador Veran hopes to finally make his mark by dismantling the unjust labor system, if he can navigate the strict hierarchy and inexplicable hostility of the prince. And caught in the middle of it all, Tamsin is trapped within four walls, the epicenter of a secret political coup to overthrow the Moquoian monarchy and perpetuate the age-old system of injustice. Separated by seas of trees and sand, the outlaw, the diplomat, and the prisoner are more connected than anyone realizes. Their personal fates might just tip the balance of power in the Eastern World—if that very power doesn’t destroy them first.
