Book excerpt: The decisions Rose made all those years ago still haunt her and continue to affect all of her relationships. She has never gotten over the love she had for her first husband JJ and the end of their marriage. Her second marriage is over and Rose is determined she will never fall in love again. While she is fully aware of the mistakes she has made throughout her life, her decisions and actions continue to be the same. The Sunday Rose series is a historical fiction account of certain events that happened in the life of my maternal grandmother, Georgia Mae Biggins, also known as Mama Georgia. I want to thank her for telling me about her life all those years ago but most importantly, for giving me a launching pad for my imagination. This allowed me the opportunity to spin a great story around her life and fulfill my passion for writing. Thank you Mama Georgia for always being there for our entire family, but especially being there for me. Author R. Jay Berry is a retired educational administrator whose love for the Lord and her family have led her to write this historical family sketch. R. Jay lives in Texas with her husband, Bernard, and their dog Strawberry. They have one son Stephen and daughter-in-law Jewel.

Book excerpt: What happens when a former Zen Buddhist monk and his feminist wife experience an apparition of the Virgin Mary? “This book could not have come at a more auspicious time, and the message is mystical perfection, not to mention a courageous one. I adore this book.”—Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit Before a vision of a mysterious “Lady” invited Clark Strand and Perdita Finn to pray the rosary, they were not only uninterested in becoming Catholic but finished with institutional religion altogether. Their main spiritual concerns were the fate of the planet and the future of their children and grandchildren in an age of ecological collapse. But this Lady barely even referred to the Church and its proscriptions. Instead, she spoke of the miraculous power of the rosary to transform lives and heal the planet, and revealed the secrets she had hidden within the rosary’s prayers and mysteries—secrets of a past age when forests were the only cathedrals and people wove rose garlands for a Mother whose loving presence was as close as the ground beneath their feet. She told Strand and Finn: The rosary is My body, and My body is the body of the world. Your body is one with that body. What cause could there be for fear? Weaving together their own remarkable story of how they came to the rosary, their discoveries about the eco-feminist wisdom at the heart of this ancient devotion, and the life-changing revelations of the Lady herself, the authors reveal an ancestral path—available to everyone, religious or not—that returns us to the powerful healing rhythms of the natural world.

Book Lively Oracles of God

Download or read book Lively Oracles of God written by and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reexamines what we often take for granted: how Scripture is presented to worshipers; how it is heard, especially by those with little experience of the life of the church; Scripture’s role in mediating the great narratives of incarnation and redemption at the high points of the year; where Scripture meets people in ritual transition; how the Bible itself provides the language of much public prayer. Contributors also consider how the relationship between Scripture and liturgy is tested by new priorities—the climate crisis, the inclusion and protection of children, the recognition and honoring of those who find themselves on the margins of the church, and the significance of gender and identity in all areas of the church’s life. This book does not offer definitive statements. It is an invitation to a wide audience to engage in new conversations with their practice of worship. Contributors include: · John Baldovin, SJ · Normand Bonneau, OMI · Stephen Burns · Cally Hammond · Christopher Irvine · David Kennedy · Lizette Larson-Miller · Ann Loades, CBE · Anne McGowan · Thomas O’Loughlin · Catherine Reid · Armand Léon van Ommen

Book A Year with George Herbert

  • Release : 2011-05-12

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1633, when The Temple was first published, many notable Christians have testified of their love for George Herbert's poetry. The great nineteenth-century preacher C. H. Spurgeon and his wife would sometimes read Herbert's poetry together on Sunday evenings. Richard Baxter wrote, "Herbert speaks to God like one that really believeth a God, and whose business in the world is most with God." C. S. Lewis described Herbert as "a man who seemed to me to excel all the authors I had ever read in conveying the very quality of life as we actually live it from moment to moment . . ." Regrettably, as the years have passed, Herbert's poetry has been increasingly neglected outside the academy. Many who would love Herbert have never even heard of him. Others feel intimidated by his poetry, fearing that they do not have the education necessary to understand what Herbert has written. In this book, Jimmy Scott Orrick has made the poetry of George Herbert accessible even to those who have had no experience reading poetry. In addition to providing thorough notes for each poem, Orrick also gives basic pointers about how to read poetry. Why not follow C. H. Spurgeon's example and "have a page or two of good George Herbert" on your Sunday evenings? Those who follow this prescription will be deeply enriched for having spent A Year with George Herbert.
