Book Summer Study Program in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Order and Disorder Planetary Dynamos

Download or read book Summer Study Program in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Order and Disorder Planetary Dynamos written by Willem V. Malkus and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures of Stephen Childress on the kinematic properties of the 'fast' dynamo, one whose growth rate is insensitive to electrical conductivity. These novel studies and the extended seminar abstracts by Andrew Soward and others that follow offer assurance of more mechanistic understanding of evolving magnetic fields in stars and planets. The timely juxtaposition of Childress' lectures on kinematic fast dynamos and the seminars by Bruce Bayly on inertial three-dimensional instabilities of shear flow, may lead soon to a dynamic fast-fast dynamo. The final section contains the fellows' reports, which were more confined to the summer topic than is usual. Several of the Fellows reported on exciting discoveries of the season, several reported on sound extensions of work discussed in the principal lectures, and several struggled with problems which resisted swift resolution. Keywords: Planetary dynamos; Geophysical fluid dynamics; Geomagnetism. (jhd).

Book The Explicit Body in Performance

Download or read book The Explicit Body in Performance written by Rebecca Schneider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Explicit Body in Performance interrogates the avant-garde precedents and theoretical terrain that combined to produce feminist performance art. Among the many artists discussed are: * Carolle Schneemann * Annie Sprinkle * Karen Finley * Robbie McCauley * Ana Mendieta * Ann Magnuson * Sandra Bernhard * Spiderwoman Rebecca Schneider tackles topics ranging across the 'post-porn modernist movement', New Right censorship, commodity fetishism, perspectival vision, and primitivism. Employing diverse critical theories from Benjamin to Lacan to postcolonial and queer theory, Schneider analyses artistic and pop cultural depictions of the explicit body in late commodity capitalism. The Explicit Body in Performance is complemented by extensive photographic illustrations and artistic productions of postmodern feminist practitioners. The book is a fascinating exploration of how these artists have wrestled with the representational structures of desire.

Book Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Atmospheric Dynamics Dynamo Theory and Climate Dynamics

Download or read book Topics in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Atmospheric Dynamics Dynamo Theory and Climate Dynamics written by M. Ghil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vigorous stirring of a cup of tea gives rise, as we all know, to interesting fluid dynamical phenomena, some of which are very hard to explain. In this book our "cup of tea" contains the currents of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans, mantle, and fluid core. Our goal is to under stand the basic physical processes which are most important in describing what we observe, directly or indirectly, in these complex systems. While in many respects our understanding is measured by the ability to predict, the focus here will be on relatively simple models which can aid our physical intuition by suggesting useful mathematical methods of investiga tion. These elementary models can be viewed as part of a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity, moving toward those which might be use fully predictive. The discussion in this book will deal primarily with the Earth. Interplanetary probes of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn have revealed many exciting phenomena which bear on geophysical fluid dynamics. They have also enabled us to see the effect of changing the values of certain parameters, such as gravity and rotation rate, on geophysical flows. On the other hand, satellite observations of our own planet on a daily and hourly basis have turned it into a unique laboratory for the study of fluid motions on a scale never dreamt of before: the motion of cyclones can be observed via satellite just as wing tip vortices are studied in a wind tunnel.

Book CTD Observations Off Northern California During the Shelf Mixed Layer Experiment SMILE May 1989

Download or read book CTD Observations Off Northern California During the Shelf Mixed Layer Experiment SMILE May 1989 written by Richard Limeburner and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CTD observations were made off the northern California coast during R/V Wecoma cruise W8905 May 5-14, 1989 as part of the Shelf Mixed Layer Experiment (SMILE). The surveys consisted of two sampling plans - a large-scale grid of four cross-shelf transects extending to both sides of Point Arena and Point Reyes, and a small-scale grid of six cross-shelf transects located near the central SMILE mooring site. All of the cross-shelf transects extended beyond the shelf break and the maximum sampling depth at each station was near-bottom or 1500 m. The average along-shelf separation between cross-shelf transects was about 15 km for the small-scale surveys and 50 km for the large-scale grid. The primary objectives of the hydrographic measurement program were to observe and characterize the temperature, salinity, density, and light transmission fields and their temporal and spatial variability in the surface boundary layer along the continental shelf and slope near the SMILE moored array, and to acquire estimates of the cross- and along-shelf scales over which the mixed-layer depth varies. This report presents a summary in graphic and tabular form of the hydrographic observations made during cruise W8905 on the R/V Wecoma.

Book Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics written by Benoit Cushman-Roisin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Geophysical Fluid Dynamics provides an introductory-level exploration of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), the principles governing air and water flows on large terrestrial scales. Physical principles are illustrated with the aid of the simplest existing models, and the computer methods are shown in juxtaposition with the equations to which they apply. It explores contemporary topics of climate dynamics and equatorial dynamics, including the Greenhouse Effect, global warming, and the El Nino Southern Oscillation. Combines both physical and numerical aspects of geophysical fluid dynamics into a single affordable volume Explores contemporary topics such as the Greenhouse Effect, global warming and the El Nino Southern Oscillation Biographical and historical notes at the ends of chapters trace the intellectual development of the field Recipient of the 2010 Wernaers Prize, awarded each year by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium (FNR-FNRS)

Book Double diffusive Processes

Download or read book Double diffusive Processes written by Stephen P. Meacham and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of double diffusion and the role that it plays in the ocean provided the central theme for the 1996 summer program in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Lectures and seminars given by staff and visitors surveyed observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical models of double diffusive phenomena. Several lectures dealt with the related phenomena of thermal convection in layered media, the dynamics of binary fluids, viscoelastic convection and magnetoconvection. Research projects by the fellows included experiments with double diffusion in a slot, work on the formation and evolution of staircases, double diffusion in stars and the interaction between convection and radiation. This volume includes write-ups of the principal lectures, reports of the fellows' research projects and abstracts of some of the seminars. A list of presentations and a bibliography may be found at the back of the volume.
