Book excerpt: National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350 test designation 3-34 on the Connecticut Impact Attenuation System (CIAS) was performed under an ongoing Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) contract in which the Narrow Connecticut Impact Attenuation System (NCIAS) was being evaluated to NCHRP Report 350. The contract for this study called for up to seven full-scale crash tests to be performed on the NCIAS. In lieu of the last test under this contract, Connecticut DOT and FHWA agreed to replace the test on the NCIAS with a test on the CIAS. This report summarizes the results of NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-34, with the 820-kg vehicle impacting the CIAS at the critical impact point (between the end of the cushion and the beginning of the length of need). The CIAS performed acceptably for all specified criteria except the longitudinal ridedown was marginal, 20.5 g's compared with the limit of 20 g's specified in NCHRP Report 350.

Book excerpt: The objective of this contract is to evaluate the NCIAS in accordance with the recommended procedures in NCHRP Report 350. If the NCIAS performs acceptably according to these criteria, the testing program will provide a fully test impact attenuation system that can be used by Connecticut and other states. A total of six full-scale crash tests were performed on the NCIAS during this study. These included NCHRP test designations 3-32, 3-33, 3-37, 3-38 (2), and 3-39. The original design of the NCIAS performed acceptably during 3-32, 3-33, and 3-37. However, in test 3-38 a significant amount of occupant compartment deformation occurred. The deformation was caused as cylinder 8 deformed and allowed the front wheel to contact the backup structure and concrete median barrier (CMB). Cylinder 8 was strengthened laterally and test 3-38 was repeated and was acceptable. The modifications made to cylinder 8 would not affect the outcome of the previous tests and these were not repeated. The last test performed on the modified NCIAS was NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-39, the "reverse" direction impact. Due to significant occupant compartment deformation and high longitudinal ridedown acceleration, the modified NCIAS did not perform acceptably in this test. In a letter from FHWA on March 26, 1999, approval for use of the NCIAS on the NHS was given provided the system was not installed at locations where reverse-direction impacts are likely.

Both permanent and temporary devices are included. Crash cushions can provide a cost-effective method for reducing or alleviating motor vehicle related injuries or fatalities, which constitute a major societal cost. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents information on the physical and impact performance characteristics of 13 crash cushions in current use in North America. Information on performance evaluation guidelines, physical characteristics, performance characteristics, selection considerations, and the operational experience of individual designs for crash cushions is provided. The synthesis concludes with possible future trends for crash cushions and appendices containing the crash test requirements of NCHRP Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, a crash cushion glossary, and a bibliography.
