Book excerpt: Six-foot-wide plain plate specimens tested at an average applied stress of about 20 ksi, a temperature of 0 F, and with the notch-wedgeimpact method of initiation, produced fracture speeds in the range of 2000 to 4000 fps. Sixfoot-wide prestressed steel plates with a region of high tensile residual strain at each edge, and a region of residual compression in the central portion, tested at zero or 3 ksi average applied stress, at 0 F, and with impact initiation, produced fracture speeds of 6000 fps in the tensile zone near the initiation source, and speeds as low as 50 fps. Two-foot-wide centrally notched and welded specimens fabricated in different ways and tested at an average applied stress of about 10 ksi and a temperature of -40 F, produced speed within 1 1/2 inches of the initiation source and in a region of high residual tensile stress as high as 5000 fps; whereas speeds throughout the remainder of the specimen, which initially possessed a low compressive residual stress, were on the order of 1800 fps. The detailed results of two tests of 6-ft-wide prestressed steel plates are presented along with pertinent observations from tests of similar specimens; also, results of nineteen tests of 2-ft-wide centrally notched plates. In 6-ft-wide prestressed plates, the residual stress field (longitudinal tensile stresses at the edges of the plate balanced by compressive stresses throughout the central portion) made initiation possible with no external applied stress, and had a significant effect on the fracture propagation. Fracture speeds were high (4000-6000 fps) near the edges of the plates and decreased rapidly to as low as l65 fps as the fracture propagated into the region of compressive stresses. In the lowspeed regions the magnitude and extent of the dynamic strain field associated with the crack tip was considerably less than had been recorded in earlier tests of high-speed fractures in plain plates. Dynamic crack propagation has been a concern to specialists in many fields: continuum mechanics, metallurgy, geology, polymer chemistry, orthopedics, applied mathematics, as well as structural design and testing. It impinges on a wide variety of problems such as rock breaking and earthquakes, pressure vessels and line pipes, comminution and the per formance of armament and ordnance, etc. Advances have been numerous, covering theories and experiments from both the microscopic and macro scopic points of view. Hence, the need for comparing the theoretical and experimental results and bridging the gaps between the atomistic and continuum approaches must be constantly emphasized. It also appeared that the overall problem of dynamic fracture could benefit from a con solidation of crack models proposed for the various types of materials: metals, ceramics, composites, rocks, glasses, polymers and biomaterials.
