Book They Shot He Scored

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eldon Davis Rathburn (1916-2008), one of the most multi-dimensional, prolific, and endlessly fascinating composers of the twentieth century, wrote more music than any other Canadian composer of his generation. During a long and productive career that spanned seventy-five years, Rathburn served for thirty years as a staff composer with the National Film Board of Canada (1947-76), scored the first generation of IMAX films, and created a diverse catalogue of orchestral and chamber works. With the aid of extensive archival and documentary materials, They Shot, He Scored chronicles Rathburn's life and works, beginning with his formative years in Saint John, New Brunswick, and his breakthrough in Los Angeles in connection with Arnold Schoenberg and the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. The book follows his work at the NFB, his close encounters with some of the most celebrated international figures in his field, and his collaboration with the team of innovators who launched the IMAX film corporation. James Wright undertakes a close analytical reading of Rathburn's film and concert scores to outline his methods, compositional techniques, influences, and idiosyncratic approach to instrumentation, as well as his proto-postmodern proclivity for borrowing from diverse styles and genres. Authoritative and insightful, They Shot, He Scored illuminates the extraordinary career of an unsung creative force in the film and music industry.

Book The Challenge of Emulation in Art and Architecture

Download or read book The Challenge of Emulation in Art and Architecture written by David Mayernik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emulation is a challenging middle ground between imitation and invention. The idea of rivaling by means of imitation, as old as the Aenead and as modern as Michelangelo, fit neither the pessimistic deference of the neoclassicists nor the revolutionary spirit of the Romantics. Emulation thus disappeared along with the Renaissance humanist tradition, but it is slowly being recovered in the scholarship of Roman art. It remains to recover emulation for the Renaissance itself, and to revivify it for modern practice. Mayernik argues that it was the absence of a coherent understanding of emulation that fostered the fissuring of artistic production in the later eighteenth century into those devoted to copying the past and those interested in continual novelty, a situation solidified over the course of the nineteenth century and mostly taken for granted today. This book is a unique contribution to our understanding of the historical phenomenon of emulation, and perhaps more importantly a timely argument for its value to contemporary practice.

Book The Conundrum of Calliope s Fate

Download or read book The Conundrum of Calliope s Fate written by Polimnia Russell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fictitious novel inspired by true events in the life of the author, this is the story of a young woman whose father was American, of British descent, and her mother Greek. Born in the States in the aftermath of World War 2, Calliope was raised in Athens, following the divorce of her parents and the remarriage of her mother. At university in the U.S., CalliopeÕs life is thrown into disarray when she falls in love with a wealthy Jewish student, whose parents were Holocaust survivors. Drafted into the army, Daniel is tragically killed in Vietnam and the subsequent birth of their daughter out of wedlock dramatically alters the course of CalliopeÕs life. Helena, DanielÕs mother, brings up her granddaughter in the Judaic tradition and Calliope returns to Greece, never to disclose the existence of her child, even to her future Greek spouse. This is a poignant account of love and loss and, above all, the implacable forces of the inevitability of fate in CalliopeÕs life.
