Book Suggestions on Teaching Geography in the Schools of Mississippi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Suggestions on Teaching Geography in the Schools of Mississippi Classic Reprint written by Willa Bolton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions on Teaching Geography in the Schools of Mississippi I. Food. Necessity for it, production, exchange, transportation, climatic influence, etc. Begin by asking each pupil separately to name one article of food he had for dinner; then other things he eats. Let them name all the foods they know; then ask to have a list written ready for the next lesson. Second Lesson. Have several lists read, and let each child add to his list the foods he forgot to name. Then ask which grew in the ground and which came from animals. Make the list over under the heads of vegetable and animal. Salt, water, etc., may be placed under minerals after telling them that they belong to neither of the other classes. The new list may be neatly prepared for the third lesson. Then the discussion is about which articles are produced at home and which are bought, it the school is in the country. If there are no home products, then lead them to find out which are grown nearby and which come from a distance. The last will cause them to study the green grocers, the meat markets, the fruit stands, the grocery store, and will furnish material for a good bit of work and several lessons, involving a mention of transportation and different climates - the wheat from the North and the bananas from the Hot Belt. No more than a mention, however - the study comes later. The country school has a tremendous opportunity here for study ing the products firsthand. The pupil can get most of his informa tion from observation with only suggestions from his teacher. He can group his products as fruits, berries, vegetables, cereals, meats, etc and the foreign grown product can be treated as suggested for the town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Mississippi: For Use in Schools Maps are as necessary to a history as to a geography, and in the history of Mississippi they are' especially important. It is impossible for a stu dent to form a correct idea of what Mississippi was when a part of Brit ish Florida, or when it was first organized as a Territory, or even when it was first admitted as a State, except with the aid of a map. It is recommended that pupils be required to reproduce each map, drawing it from memory, and that teachers ask such map questions as will thor oughly impress the geography of that particular time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Geography: Suggestions Regarding Principles and Methods for the Use of Teachers For some years past there has been a growing recog nition of the extremely unsatisfactory position of Geography in the general educational system of this country. Various suggestions and efforts have been made to place the subject on a better footing. But reform in such matters is necessarily Slow. Inveterate habits of use and wont are apt to blind us to the need for change, and any attempt to alter the existing sys tem touches many different kinds of vested interests. Even those who sympathise with the proposals for reform raise their hands in despair, and ask where, amid the crowd of subjects now demanded, room is to be found for any new topic, or for any expansion of an old one. I fully recognise the gravity of these difficulties, and am by no means sanguine that they are all likely soon to be cleared away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Geography: Man and Climate These notes are planned to facilitate the work of the Teachers' course for the student by putting in his hand a statement of principles that will be amplified and illustrated in the class room, and formulating the illustrative exercises he is to perform. The work is a Teachers' Course in the State Normal College. That means that it is 12 weeks of work thought essential to the professional preparation of the teacher who can give but one term to this department. The time period is not deliberate choice, but traditional. The 12 weeks' course is our unit. Given that unit it has seemed most prudent to subdivide the professional work into: 1 The Teachers' Course, and 2 Regional Geography; (a) Geography of America, (b) Geography of Europe. We wish our students to have a modern point of view in geography. We have therefore to treat of the principles involved in modern doctrine on the subject. The time limitation narrows this course to a portion of the subject matter; the distribution of Man, Climate, which is the first controlling condition of that distribution, and the construction of simple maps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Geography of the Mississippi Valley, Vol. 1 of 2 A kind of affectionate feeling for the country, where he has enjoyed, and suffered, all that the human heart can be supposed capable of feeling on this side Of the grave, which contains his children, his charities, and all those ties, which call forth aspirations for its well-being, after he shall be in the dust, enlisted his first purpose to commence this work. The general amenity of its aspect, its boundless woods and prairies, its long and devious streams, and its unparalleled advancement in population and improvement, filled his imagination. He had seen the country, in some sense, grow up under his eye. He saw the first steam boat, that descend ed the Mississippi. He had seen much of that transformation, as if Of magic, which has converted the wilderness to fields and orchards. He has wished to transfer to others some of the impressions, which have been wroughton his own mind by witnessing those changes. Such were some of the motives, that impelled him to undertake this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual of Geography: I. Hints to Teachers, II. Modern Facts and Ancient Fancies The suggestions offered in the following Manual have been prompted by experience in the School-room, as well as by that of exploration and travel. They are intended as a sup plement, and not as a substitute, for the ordinary work of the teacher. They will be of no avail whatever where the only aim in 'the study of geography is the preparation for examination. I have thought it unnecessary to present any graded course of study. The admirable work of Professor Frye, 'child and Nature, ' leaves in that direction nothing to be desired. Mr. Nicholl's 'topics in Geography' will also be found a most useful companion. Book First Lessons in Geography

Download or read book First Lessons in Geography written by James Monteith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Geography: On the Plan of Object Teaching The plan of this little work is such, that the subject is presented in the most simple form. It treats of general features, such as the locality and description of Continents, Countries, States, Rivers, Mountains, &c., without dwelling prematurely upon details which embarrass the learner in his first effort. The Maps are free from all meridians, parallels of latitude, and any superabundance of names; thereby giving a greater prominence to the general divisions of land and water. The plan of Object Teaching, by which the mind receives impressions through the medium of the eye, is here so combined with the Map Exercises, that a child just able to read is at once interested and instructed.
