Book excerpt: Tired of playing games, Dalia is ready to give Travis the birthday present of his life, even if they have to spend an entire romantic evening blindfolded. Frightened of repeating the same mistakes as their parents, Dalia Kade and Travis Moby have been dancing around the magnetic attraction between them for far too long. Dalia is tired of playing games. She's ready to push past all the fears and uncertainty and claim the only man who can send her heart and hormones on a riotous ride to Orgasmville. She enlists the help of her best friend, Zoie Beagan and Zoie's new business, Stupendous Occasions, to give Travis the best birthday present of his life. Travis Moby has contented himself with a quiet birthday evening alone when he discovers an invitation to a romantic dinner with an anonymous companion. Intrigued and convinced it could only be Dalia Kade, he accepts the invitation. An erotic spice to the evening proves more than expected and exactly what's needed to bust through the walls of trepidation between them when the lights go out. But in the light of a new day, they must struggle to keep everything they buried the night before in the dark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Body of the Cross is a study of holy victims in Western Christian history and how the uses of their bodies in Christian thought led to the idea of the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice. Since its first centuries, Christianity has traded on the suffering of victims—martyrs, mystics, and heretics—as substitutes for the Christian social body. These victims secured holiness, either by their own sacred power or by their reprobation and rejection. Just as their bodies were mediated in eucharistic, social, and Christological ways, so too did the flesh of Jesus Christ become one of those holy substitutes. But it was only late in Western history that he took on the function of the exemplary victim. In tracing the story of this embodied development, The Body of the Cross gives special attention to popular spirituality, religious dissent, and the writing of women throughout Christian history. It examines the symbol of the cross as it functions in key moments throughout this history, including the parting of the ways of Judaism and Christianity, the gnostic debates, martyr traditions, and medieval affective devotion and heresy. Finally, in a Reformation era haunted by divine wrath, these themes concentrated in the unique concept that Jesus Christ died on the cross to absorb divine punishment for sin: a holy body and a rejected body in one.

Book The Country of the Blind and Other Science fiction Stories

Download or read book The Country of the Blind and Other Science fiction Stories written by Herbert George Wells and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king." Or is he? In H. G. Wells' acclaimed tale, a stranded mountaineer encounters an isolated society in which his apparent advantage proves less than valuable. This thought-provoking fable is accompanied by other short stories, including "The Star," a gripping tale about a massive celestial object hurtling toward the Earth, as well as "The New Accelerator," "The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes," "Under the Knife," and "The Queer Story of Brownlow's Newspaper." With the 1895 publication of his first novel, The Time Machine, Wells established himself as the foremost science-fiction writer of his era. This entertaining collection was selected and edited by Martin Gardner, who also provides an Afterword that offers insight into the liveliness and originality of Wells’ imagination.
