Book excerpt: We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -][ell][sup+][nu]. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb[sup -1] of data collected at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the inclusive lepton spectrum from all[Upsilon](4S) events in the same data set. These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c. From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B[sup 0] and B[sup+] semileptonic branching fractions, b[sub 0] and b[sub+], their ratio, and the production ratio f[sub+-]/f[sub 00] of B[sup+] and B[sup 0] pairs at the[Upsilon](4S). We report b[sub+]/b[sub 0]= 0.950[sub -0.080][sup+0.117][+-] 0.091, b[sub 0]= (10.78[+-] 0.60[+-] 0.69)%, and b[sub+]= (10.25[+-] 0.57[+-] 0.65)%. b[sub+]/b[sub 0] is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes, [tau][sub+]/[tau][sub 0].

Book excerpt: A preliminary result on the study of the inclusive electron spectrum in B[yields] X[sub u]e[nu] decays above the kinematic limit for the dominant B[yields] X[sub c]e[nu] transitions is presented. This study is performed at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory, where B meson pairs are produced in the decay of the[Upsilon](4S) resonance. For the electron momentum range of 2.3-2.6 GeV/c in the[Upsilon](4S) rest frame, the partial branching ratio is measured to be[Delta][Beta](B[yields] X[sub u]e[nu])= (0.152[+-] 0.014[+-] 0.014)[center-dot] 10[sup -3].

Book excerpt: A largely model-independent measurement of the inclusive electron momentum spectrum and branching fraction for semileptonic decays of B mesons is presented based on data recorded at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. Backgrounds from secondary charm decays are separated from prompt B decays using charge and angular correlations between the electron from one B meson and a high momentum electron tag from the second B meson. The resulting branching fraction is [Beta](B → Xe[nu]) = (10.87 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.30(syst))%. Based on this measurement we determine the CKM matrix element.

Book excerpt: We present the results of a search for four exclusive semileptonic decays B & rarr; D(*)tau -nutau in 209 fb -1 of data collected with the BABAR detector, corresponding to 232 million e+e - & rarr; Upsilon(4S) & rarr; B B events. We select events with a D (*) meson and a light lepton (e or mu) recoiling against a fully-reconstructed B meson. We perform a fit to the lepton spectrum and missing mass squared to discriminate signal events from backgrounds, predominantly B & rarr; D (*) & ell;-nu & ell; . A control sample of identified D** & ell;- nu & ell; events is included in the fit to estimate the background contribution from these decays. We measure B (B & rarr; Dtaunu) = (0.86+/-0.24+/-0.11+/-0.06)% and B (B & rarr; D*taunu) = (1.62+/-0.31+/-0.10+/-0.05)%, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and normalization-mode related, respectively, and where the results are expressed for the B0 lifetime.

Book excerpt: The authors study the inclusive electron spectrum of B --> X[sub u]e[nu] decays near the kinematic limit for B --> X[sub c]e[nu] transitions using a sample of 88 million [Upsilon](4S) decays recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP II e[sup +]e[sup -] storage rings. For the electron momentum interval of 2.0-2.6GeV/c the partial branching fraction is measured to be [Delta]B(B --> X[sub u]e[nu]) = (0.480 [+-] 0.029(stat) [+-] 0.053(syst) x 10[sup -3]). Combining this result on [Delta]B with measurements of the inclusive photon spectrum in B --> X[sub s][gamma] transition the authors find V[sub ub] = 3.94 [+-] 0.25exp [+-] 0.37 f[sub u] [+-] 0.19 theory x 10[sup -3], where the first error represents the combined statistical and systematic experimental uncertainty of the partial branching fraction measurement, the second refers to the uncertainty of the determination of the fraction f[sub u] of the inclusive electron spectrum that falls within the cuts, and the third error is due to theoretical uncertainties in the QCD corrections, plus the uncertainty in the b-quark mass. All results are preliminary.

Book excerpt: We report on a study of inclusive B{sup -} and {bar B}{sup 0} meson decays to D{sup 0}X, {bar D}{sup 0}X, D{sup +}X, D{sup -}X, D{sub s}{sup +}X, D{sub s}{sup -}X, {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}X, {bar {Lambda}}{sub c}{sup -}X, based on a sample of 231 million B{bar B} events recorded with the BABAR detector at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. Events are selected by completely reconstructing one B and searching for a reconstructed charm particle in the rest of the event. From the measured branching fractions of these decays, we infer the number of charm and anti-charm particles per {bar B} decay, separately for charged and neutral parents. We derive the total charm yield per B{sup -} decay, n{sub c}{sup -} = 1.202 {+-} 0.023 {+-} 0.040{sub -0.029}{sup +0.035}, and per {bar B}{sup 0} decay, n = 1.193 {+-} 0.030 {+-} 0.034{sub -0.035}{sup +0.044} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third reflects the charm branching-fraction uncertainties. We also present the charm momentum distributions measured in the {bar B} rest frame.

Book excerpt: As part of the BaBar project at SLAC to study the properties of B mesons, we have carried out a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decay mode B {yields} wlv, which can be used to determine the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V{sub ub}. Using simulated event samples, this study focuses on determining criteria on variables for selection of B {yields} wlv signal and suppression of background from other types of B{bar B} events and continuum processes. In addition, we determine optimal cuts on variables to ensure a good neutrino reconstruction. With these selection cuts, we were able to achieve a signal-to-background ratio of 0.68 and a signal efficiency of the order of 1%. Applying these cuts to a sample of 83 million B{bar B} events recorded by BaBar in e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance, we obtain a yield of 115 {+-} 19 B {yields} wlv decays.

Book excerpt: The authors report updates on two analyses of inclusive semileptonic B decays based on a dataset of 89 million B[bar B] events recorded with the BABAR detector at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance. Events are selected by fully reconstructing the decay of one B meson and identifying a charged lepton from the decay of the other [bar B] meson. IN the first analysis, the measurement of the first and second moment of the hadronic mass distribution in Cabibbo-favored [bar B] [yields] X[sub c][ell][bar [nu]] decays allows for the determination of the nonperturbative parameters [bar [Lambda]] and [lambda][sub 1] of Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and V[sub cb]. In the second analysis, the hadronic mass distribution is used to measure the inclusive charmless semileptonic branching fraction and to determine V[sub ub].

First, the topics in metallization were extended to include problems related to atomic transport for reflow and filling of vias and contact holes, silicadation, and barrier metals. These topics are of particular interest for the development of the current quarter- micron metallization. The second was to include metallization for liquid crystal display of devices and surface acoustic devices in addition to semiconductor devices. Problems related to mass transport in these devices have become increasingly important, in some cases more so than those in semiconductor devices. Several papers were presented to discuss the similarities and differences of these phenomena and their mechanisms, focusing on the questions concerning why and how atoms migrate and what are the effects of the migration.

Book excerpt: In this note, recent results of studies of semileptonic B meson decays from BABAR are discussed and preliminary results given. In particular, a recent measurement of?(B → D{sup (*)}??) and the ratio?(B → D{sup (*)}??)/?(B → D{sup (*)}l?) is presented. For the D* mode, a branching fraction of 1.79 ± 0.13(stat) ± 0.17(syst) is found, with a ratio of 0.325 ± 0.023(stat) ± 0.027(syst). For the D mode, the results are 1.04 ± 0.12(stat) ± 0.14(syst) and 0.456 ± 0.053(stat) ± 0.056(syst), respectively. In addition, a study of B{sub s} production and semileptonic decays using data collected in a center-of-mass energy region above the?(4S) resonance is discussed. The semileptonic branching fraction?(B{sub s} → l?X) is measured to be 9.9{sub -2.1}{sup +2.6}(stat){sub -2.0}{sup +1.3}(syst).
