The densities obtained from cores and the nuclear density gauge from seven construction projects were compared. The projects were either newly constructed or under construction when the tests were performed. A linear regression technique was used to investigate how well the core densities could be predicted from nuclear densities. Correlation coefficients were determined to indicate the degree of correlation between the core and nuclear densities. Using a statistical analysis technique, the range of the mean difference between core and nuclear measurements was established for specified confidence levels for each project.

Book excerpt: This report describes research efforts to determine if commercially available non-nuclear density gauges can be used for TxDOT's density profile and joint density testing procedures. Researchers conducted testing with a Troxler 3450 nuclear gauge (operated in the thin-lift mode) and the Pavetracker (PT) and Pavement Quality Indicator (PQI) non-nuclear gauges. In a laboratory setting, research showed all the gauges could be affected by mix temperature, where gauge readings typically decreased with decreasing mix temperature. All gauges readings were also impacted by moisture, with the nuclear gauge least impacted. The precision of all gauges in the lab was good, with standard deviations below 0.5 pcf with the non-nuclear gauges and less than 1.0 pcf with the nuclear gauge. Field-testing showed the PQI was a suitable alternative to the nuclear gauge for density profiling and joint density testing.

Book excerpt: To ensure that compacted backfill performs as expected, compaction control is performed in the field by measuring the dry unit weight and moisture content of the compacted fill. The nuclear gauge is the most common device used to make these measurements because it is very rapid and thus does not delay the construction schedule. However, due to increased regulatory restrictions and growing concerns over the safety of using a device with a nuclear source, there is an increased effort to find a possible alternative to the nuclear gauge for compaction control. In this study, four devices were evaluated as potential replacements for the nuclear gauge. These devices include the Clegg Impact Hammer, the PANDA Dynamic Cone Penetrometer, the Moisture Density Indicator (MDI), and the Electrical Density Gauge (EDG). All the devices underwent laboratory testing conducted in large-scale soil specimens of poorly graded sand compacted to a target dry unit weight and moisture content. The MDI and EDG also underwent field testing at several different construction sites in central Texas. All testing includes comparisons between the results from the replacement devices and traditional compaction control devices. Analysis of the data revealed that, at this time, none of the four devices can be recommended to replace the nuclear gauge because they do not always accurately assess the compaction of the soil.

Book excerpt: In situ measurements of soil unit weight and moisture content play a critical role in conventional compaction quality assurance and quality control procedures. Recently, there have been a number of attempts to develop alternative electrically-based test devices that can be used to measure the in situ unit weight and/or moisture content of a compacted soil; these devices are intended to serve as alternatives to more traditional tests such as sand cone, rubber balloon, drive cylinder, or nuclear density gauge tests. The study described in this paper focuses on the use of a relatively new electrically-based in situ soil test device that uses measurements of soil complex impedance, soil capacitance, and soil resistance to infer in situ soil unit weight and moisture content; this device is typically referred to as a complex-impedance measuring instrument (CIMI). This paper provides a detailed explanation of current CIMI operating principles and also describes the utilization of a CIMI for field- and laboratory-based testing. The CIMI used in this study was calibrated and assessed in two field compaction projects in which different silty sands were used for construction. A mold-based calibration approach was developed for building an electrically-based soil model using the CIMI; this approach provides an alternative to field calibration of the device. In order to perform a more complete assessment of the CIMI in a controlled environment, a series of CIMI tests were conducted in a large "field box," and the resulting in situ measurements of soil unit weight and moisture content made using the CIMI are compared with the results from nuclear density gauge, sand cone, and drive cylinder tests. The advantages and disadvantages of field versus mold calibration of the CIMI are discussed, and side-by-side assessment of the CIMI relative to other conventionally used compaction control tests allows the reader to assess the accuracy of this device.
