Download or read book A Colour Atlas of Salmonid Diseases written by David W. Bruno and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salmonids have widespread economic and environmental importance. Correct identification and understanding of their diseases are therefore vital if valuable stocks are to be maintained. This volume provides a practical guide and an aid to disease recognition. This is an updated and extended version of the first publication in 1996 and contains around 400 high quality colour photomicrographs.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews: Methods and Technology in Fish Biology and Fisheries published by Kluwer Academic Publishers is a book series dedicated to the publication of information on advanced, forward-looking methodologies, technologies, or perspectives in fish and fisheries. This series is especially dedicated to relevant topics addressing global, international concern in fish and fisheries. Humans continue to challenge our environments with new technologies and technological applications. The dynamic creativity of our own species often tends to place the greatest burden on our supporting ecosystems. This is especially true for aquatic networks of creeks, lakes, rivers and ocean environments. We also frequently use our conceptual powers to balance conflicting requirements and demands on nature and continue to develop new approaches and tools to provide sustainable resources as well as conserve what we hold most dear on local and global scales. This book series will provide a window into the developing dynamic among humans, aquatic ecosystems (both freshwater and marine), and the organisms that inhabit aquatic environments. There are many reasons to doubt the increasing social and economic value technology has gained over the last two centuries. Science and technology represent stages in human development. I agree with Ernst Mayer when he said in Toward a New Philosophy of Biology (1988) that "endeavors to solve all scientific problems by pure logic and refined measurements are unproductive, if not totally irrelevant.

Book Life History Distribution and Invertebrate Host parasite Interactions of the Causative Agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease PKD Tetracapsuloides Bryosalmonae

Download or read book Life History Distribution and Invertebrate Host parasite Interactions of the Causative Agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease PKD Tetracapsuloides Bryosalmonae written by Inês Fontes and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is an emerging disease of salmonid fish that is linked with environmental change. The causative agent is the myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Tb) which exploits the freshwater bryozoan Fredericella sultana (Fs) as definitive hosts. Fs forms colonies that reproduce mainly asexually through fragmentation and the production of over-wintering dormant stages (statoblasts). In Fs the parasite cycles between overt and covert infections, the former characterised by sacs containing spores infectious to fish. This thesis aims to increase understanding of the prevalence, severity and transmission of Tb in Fs through field and laboratory studies and to identify factors associated with the presence and abundance of the parasite and its hosts in British rivers. The results of this research are ultimately relevant for the conservation, health and diversity of wild fish populations. I provide an introduction to Tb and PKD and follow with four data chapters on infection dynamics of Tb within bryozoan hosts and its detection in river water. A fifth data chapter investigates factors affecting the distribution and abundance of Fs and Tb and the identification of disease risks. A concluding chapter summarises the salient points of my research and suggests directions for future work. My research has demonstrated: high prevalence of covert infections in bryozoan populations in space and time (Chapter 2); transmission to colony fragments and statoblasts via cryptic stages (Chapter 3); the quantification of Tb in water samples in early summer and a greater detection of Tb in larger sample volumes (Chapter 4); that host stress promotes horizontal transmission from bryozoans to fish (Chapter 5); that Fs is more likely to occur in warm, eutrophic habitats in the south of Britain (Chapter 6).
