This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Parasites of the Cotton Boll Weevil The boll weevil has been present in the United States for fourteen years. At this time it is doing serious damage to cotton in four States, and during the present season undoubtedly will invade a fifth. In regions like Central America, where the insect has existed for many years, there are various influences that serve to hold it in check. In this country Similar influences are beginning to be in evidence. Among the direct factors in the natural control Of the boll weevil that are now at work are the following: Heat and dry ness, the native ant Solenopsis geminata, winter temperatures, proliferation, parasites, defoliation by the cotton leaf-worm, deter minate growth, and birds. Of these, proliferation and birds have already received careful special attention, while the work of the native ant has received preliminary notice. The other factors have also been more or less discussed in the publications of the Bureau of Entomology and elsewhere, and more extensive studies of certain ones will be discussed by Dr. W. E. Hinds in Bulletin No. 74 of this Bureau. While the work of parasites, discussed in this bulletin, is not. At present one Of the most important factors in the control of the boll weevil, the indications are clear that its importance will grow rapidly. Moreover, the matter has special interest for the reason that it is not unlikely that practical means may be devised to increase the work of the parasites. Book Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hibernation of the Mexican Cotton Boll Weevil Until this time the hibernation of the bell weevil has been less understood than any other phase of its life history. This was due to the great difficulty in obtaining the necessary data and the fact that the phenomena of hibernation are not necessarily identical in different seasons. In fact, it will be seen from the following pages that there have been very important dissimilarities between the years when special observations have been under way. The necessary repeated work in large cages in different localities has now been carried on and extensive field observations have been made in various representative parts of the infested area as to the natural situations in which the hibernating weevils occur. As a result, the present bulletin will make the life history of the bell weevil during the winter season at least as well known as any other portion of its biology. In the work leading to this bulletin practical considerations have always received primary attention. However, it has repeatedly been shown that careful detailed investigations of injurious insects may result in important suggestions for control that are not foreseen at the beginning of the work. Therefore the tepic of the hibernation of the boll weevil has been investigated from every possible standpoint. Its importance, as a critical period in the life history of a most injuri ous pest, has abundantly warranted this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Biology of the Arizona Wild Cotton Weevil During the season a number Of tests were made to determine the relative powers of cotton and Thurberia for attracting the weevils. Various types of weevils and different foods were used In the different lots but the method Of procedure was identical for all. Large, weevil-proof screen cages were used. They were placed on bare ground which was kept slightly moist by an irrigation ditch on each side of the row of cages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Boll Weevil (Anthonomus Grandis Boh.): Abstracts of Research Publications, 1843-1960 While a considerable amount of experimental work has been done in various parts of the United States in dusting cotton for the cotton boll weevil, it was essential that special tests be made in Georgia. Particulars are given of the experiments and the results show that the method was successful in practically every case. Directions are given for applying poison; the various materials that may be used, of which calcium arsenate gave the best results; the dosage and number of applications; and suitable machinery. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant-Bugs Injurious to Cotton Bolls Damage by the boll weevil has brought into prominence many other insects which attack the cotton plant, the work of which has been largely overlooked. Among the most important of these minor insects are various species of plant-bugs. Many of these have been known as enemies of the cotton plant for some years, but they have received only slight attention from economic entomologists. When their damage is added to the injury done by the cotton boll weevil, still further reducing the crop, they become of such importance that full knowledge of their habits and life history is demanded. The studies upon which this bulletin is based were conducted to add to our knowledge of the biology of an important group of insect pests and of the most practical and efficient methods by which they may be controlled. Book Recent Experimental Work on Poisoning Cotton Boll Weevils Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recent Experimental Work on Poisoning Cotton Boll Weevils Classic Reprint written by Bert Raymond Coad and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Experimental Work on Poisoning Cotton-Boll Weevils The results of these experiments were certainly definite and Sig nificant, but it was considered possible that they might have been due to some peculiar conditions prevailing during that season and that they could not be duplicated during another year. Consequently the experiments during the season of 1916 were planned largely to check the results secured during 1915, with the important change that provision was made for a wider range in the periods of applica tion. In 1916 the applications in the different experiments extended from the first appearance of the weevils in June until about the 1st of September. On the whole the results in 1916 were just as definite as were those of 1915, and the greater importance of the late-season applications Was very plainly demonstrated. In this connection a detailed description of a few of the tests is of interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
