Book excerpt: Reviews of the First Edition `...valuable and enjoyable reading for all studying Shakespeare's plays.' Following in the patternestablished by John Russell Brown for the excellent series (Theatre and Production Studies), he provides first an account of Shakespeare's company, then a study of three individual plays Twelfth Night, Hamlet and Macbeth as performed by the company. Peter Thomson writes in a crisp, sharp, enlivening style.' TLS '`...the best analysis yet of Elizabethan acting practices, excavated form the texts themselves rather than reconstructed on basis of one monolithic theory, and an essay on Hamlet that is a model of Critical intelligence and theatrical invention.' Book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies

Download or read book The Elizabethan Playhouse and Other Studies written by William J. Lawrence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Playhouse, and Other Studies The genial reception given to my earlier book on the Elizabethan Playhouse has encouraged me to issue this Second Series of studies. My chief aim has been, as before, to throw additional light on the obscurities of the Elizabethan Stage, and to emphasize the remarkable vitality of its conventions by demonstrating how many of them contrived to wind their tendrils round the trunk of early picture-stage dramaturgy. We sometimes forget that if there have been growth and decadence since Shakespeare's time, there has also been a certain measure of continuity. No apology need, I hope, be expressed for the inclusion of one or two papers at the end which lie outside the scope of the main inquiry. They are the result of patient delving, and their existence is justified by the new facts they present. I have also thought it advisable to reprint in amended form in an appendix the chronological list of Elizabethan and quasi-Elizabethan theatres originally published at the end of my first paper in the earlier volume. Corrected by the light of the recent discoveries of Monsieur Feuillerat and Professor C. W. Wallace, this embodies the chief facts known to modern learning about the early playhouses. Of these studies it also requires to be noted that the third, fifth, sixth and eighth are now published for the first time. Book Shakespeare and the Popular Tradition in the Theater

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Popular Tradition in the Theater written by Robert Weimann and published by Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criticism based on literary or formalist conceptions of structure or on the history of ideas, Robert Weimann contends, has removed Shakespeare from the theater, and the theater from society at large. 'It is only when Elizabethan society, theater, and language are seen as interrelated that the structure of Shakespeare's dramatic art emerges as fully functional, that is, as part of a larger, and not only literary, whole.'

Book Elizabethan Theatre History An Annotated Bibliography of Scholarship 1664 1979

Download or read book Elizabethan Theatre History An Annotated Bibliography of Scholarship 1664 1979 written by David Stevens and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formerly published as "English Renaissance Theatre History: A Reference Guide" by G. K. Hall in 1982, this annotated bibliography of scholarship in the field of Elizabethan theatre history has been out of print for almost 30 years. Most academic libraries have a copy in their reference departments, and this classic is now available for the personal libraries of students and scholars in the field. It has never been easier to review the academic literature in such areas as reconstructions of Shakespeare's Globe Playhouse, and other public and private playhouses of Shakespeare's London; the court masques; Inigo Jones; Richard Burbage and other actors of the time; the Lord Mayor's Shows; Puritan opposition to the stage; and other such topics. The terminal date of 1979 reflects the date of original production, but with this tool it is a simple matter for the scholar to update his or her review of the literature. The comprehensive Index is invaluable, and Stevens also provides a preface and introduction.
