This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental investigation of SnO2 and ZnO thin films with emphasis on their use in solid state gas detection is discussed. Methods of thin film preparation, described here, include the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique for SnO2 films and the radio frequency sputtering technique for SnO2 and ZnO films. The use of Auger electron spectroscopy, (AES), transmission electron microscopy, (TEM) and x ray diffractometry, (XRD) in the analysis of these films is reported. Careful selection of the most useful films are made by applying these techniques to the films prepared here. The electrical stability and gas sensitivity response of rf sputtered films are studied. Information regarding the mechanisms involved in gas detection are also presented. Some preliminary device structures using these films along with well-established techniques for planar processing are also reported.

This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ZnO films have been reproducibly grown using chemical deposition and radio-frequency sputtering techniques. These films are polycrystalline or amorphous, but are stable, uniform and lend themselves to material characterization by Auger and x-ray analysis techniques, and electrical measurements. SnO2 films have been reproducibly grown by chemical vapor deposition, vacuum deposition and radio-frequency sputtering techniques. These films are also polycrystalline or amorphous, and lend themselves to material characterization and measurements. By vacuum deposition techniques, Si-SnO2 heterojunctions have been grown, which exhibit good rectification properties. An original thermodynamic analysis of the growth of SnO2 by a chemical vapor deposition technique based on the reaction between SnCl4 and H2O has been developed and submitted for publication. Pd-SiO2-Si Schottky barrier diodes exhibiting excellent rectification properties have been successfully fabricated. A formalism has been established for the analysis of the behavior of these devices in the presence of H2, H2S and CO. The ZnO films grown by chemical deposition have proven to be sensitive to CO and CH4. Sputtered ZnO films are sensitive to O2 and H2. SnO2 films grown by chemical vapor deposition are not very sensitive to gases. Sputtered films, however, are very sensitive to H2 and H2S. The Pd-SiO2-Si diodes are extremely sensitive to H2, H2S and NH3, and, under certain conditions, to CO. A microprocessor data processing system has been developed incorporating gas sensors in the presence of a variety of gases and gas mixtures.

Book Semiconductor Metal Oxides for Hydrogen Gas Sensing

Download or read book Semiconductor Metal Oxides for Hydrogen Gas Sensing written by Qahtan Al-zaidi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only practical way to imitate human nose function is via gas sensors which monitor air quality and provide a mean to premature alert of potential risk. A gas sensor can form a part of an early warning system, notifying the appropriate authorities or provide the feedback signal to a process control system. To achieve this, the gas sensor must be accurate and stable in-situ real time measurements. It is foreseen that hydrogen energy will form the infrastructure that will power future societies since it is a clean, cost-effective and renewable source of energy. However, hydrogen, being flammable gas, has a lower expolsion limit of 4% in air meaning that even a small spark can ignite the mixture. Therefore, hydrogen generation, transport and storage can be dangerous if not handled with caution. This requires high precision sensitive gas sensors which are able to detect the smallest leaks fastly. Semiconductor Metal Oxide gas sensors are an important candidate for this task.

Book Metalloporphyrin decorated Semiconducting Oxides for Gas Sensing Applications

Download or read book Metalloporphyrin decorated Semiconducting Oxides for Gas Sensing Applications written by Ziqi Lu and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air quality and environmental problems have attracted more and more researchers’ attention in the past few decades. Since Taguchi released the first practical semiconductor gas sensor applied to the market, more and more researchers have invested in the research on the improvement and application of semiconductor gas sensors and a large number of modified tin oxide gas sensors with various gas sensing properties have been reported in the past few decades. This project has created new solid-state materials of metalloporphyrin-decorated metal oxides for gas sensing applications, directed at the measurement of nitrogen dioxide at low concentration in air. The hypothesis was that metalloporphyrins grafted onto the surface of tin dioxide could act as electronic surface states, such that changes in the energy or electron occupancy of the highest occupied molecular orbital of the porphyrin would be reflected in changes of the conductivity of the tin dioxide. Adsorption of nitrogen dioxide as an axial ligand of the porphyrin would then be signalled by a change in electrical conductivity. Tin dioxide doped with In(III) was successfully synthesised. This was a metastable material since In(III) is known to be insoluble in SnO2. Successful substitution of indium was signalled by a significantly decreased electrical conductivity , such that the effect of adsorption of surface donor states could be observed, and confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ruthenium(II)-carbonyl, platinum and palladium porphyrins having peripheral carboxylic acid groups were synthesised: the peripheral carboxylate being presumed, from literature studies, important to secure ‘flat-on’ adsorption of the porphyrin onto the oxide. All porphyrins and metalloporphyrins were fully characterized by 1H NMR, UV-Vis, IR and MS and the metal oxides fully characterized by powder XRD, SEM, EDS, XPS and BET adsorption. The increase in electrical conductivity of the oxide consequent on adsorption of the porphyrin confirmed the first hypothesis. Surface states within the band gap of the oxide, associated with the porphyrin, were detected by XPS. The Ru-CO porphyrin-decorated oxide was explored as a sensor for NO2 in air, at concentrations relevant to the study of urban air quality – up to a mixing ratio of 400 parts-per-billion (109) by volume. There was a significant signal to the presence of NO2 with the sensor heated at temperatures up to 150oC, confirming the second hypothesis. However, the porphyrin was rapidly and irreversibly decomposed at temperatures above 125oC, observable by the loss of the distinctive orange-red colour of the porphyrin and by changes in the XP valence band spectrum. Although the temperature instability would limit the practical application of this particular formulation, the successful confirmation of the hypotheses underpinning this work shows that the idea of engineering surface states of metal oxides in order to create specific gas sensors is workable and worthy of further exploration.
