Book excerpt: Professor Nicholson examines the life, work and teaching of three of the most important of the early Súfís. Súfism, as Professor Nicholson suggests, lies at the heart both of the religious philosophy and the popular religion of Islam.

Download or read book Studies in Islamic Poetry Classic Reprint written by Reynold Alleyne Nicholson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Islamic Poetry I cannot send forth this book without some reference to what has helped me to write it. Thirty years have now passed since I began to read Persian with Professor E. G. Browne. Looking back over that period, I recall his constant sympathy, his ever ready encouragement and support, with feelings which are beyond my power to express. By dedicating these Studies to him I would pay tribute to a great Orientalist and more especially acknowledge, in a way that will not displease him, my personal debt of gratitude and affection. Book Early Islamic Poetry and Poetics

Download or read book Early Islamic Poetry and Poetics written by Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Early Islamic Poetry and Poetics, Suzanne Stetkevych presents a selection of the formative studies of classical Arabic poetry of the past thirty-five years, a period that has witnessed the increasing integration of classical Arabic poetry into the contemporary humanistic disciplines. For the qasida, the Arabic heroic and then courtly ode, the selected studies engage orality theory, Structuralism, ritual theory, myth, gender, ekphrastic and interarts theory, speech act and performance theory, to produce an aesthetics and sociology of poetic form. Works on the ghazal, the wine-poem, and other lyric forms reveal their sociological, psychological, structural, and thematic distinction from, and relation to, the dominant qasida-form. Stetkevych's Introduction contextualizes the selected articles in a concise critical and bibliographical essay on the major achievements and trajectories of the field.

Book Poetry and Mysticism in Islam

Download or read book Poetry and Mysticism in Islam written by Amin Banani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-25 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi was one of the greatest poets and mystics of the Islamic world. He was born in Balkh (Korasan) in AD 1207 and died in Konya (Turkey) in AD 1273. This book is an examination of his spiritual and literary heritage. As Annemarie Schimmel, the recipient of the Eleventh Giorgio Della Vida Award in Islamic Studies, has written, 'no other mystic and poet from the Islamic world is as well known in the West as Rumi', and she, more than any Western scholar, is his most celebrated and eloquent interpreter. The scholars who Professor Schimmel has invited to share in her tribute have all added new dimensions to an understanding of Rumi and to his impact on the Islamic world.

Book Studies in Islamic Mysticism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Islamic Mysticism Classic Reprint written by Reynold Alleyne Nicholson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Islamic Mysticism As was explained in the preface to my Studies in Islamic Poetry, the following essays conclude a series of five, which fall into two groups and are therefore published in separate volumes. While mysticism, save for a few casual references, found no place in the studies.on the Lubdbu l-Albdb of Awfi and the Luzumiyydt of Abu 'l-'Ala al-Ma'arri, in these now brought together it has taken entire possession of the field. Ibnu 1-Farid, indeed, is an exquisite poet; and the picture of Abu Sa id ibn Abi 1-Khayr, drawn by pious faith and coloured with legendary romance, may be looked upon as a work of art in its way. But on the whole the literary interest of the present volume is subordinate to the religious and philosophical. I have tried to make the reader acquainted with three Sufis famous in the East and worthy of being known in Europe. Most of what has hitherto been written concerning Abu Sa id begins and ends with the quatrains passing as his, though (for the chief part, at any rate) they were neither composed nor recited by him. As to Jili, the masterly sketch in Dr Muhammad Iqbal's Development of Metaphysics in Persia stands almost alone. Ibnu 1-Farid had the misfortune to be translated by Von Hammer, and the first intelligent or intelligible version of his great Td iyya appeared in Italy four years ago. It will be seen that the subjects chosen illustrate different aspects of Sufism and exhibit racial contrasts, of which perhaps the importance has not yet been sufficiently recognised. Abu Sa id, the free-thinking free-living dervish, is a Persian through and through, while Ibnu 1-Farid in the form of his poetry as well as in the individuality of his spiritual enthusiasm displays the narrower and tenser genius of the Semite. It beautifully furnishes some of the teachings based on the fundamentals of Islam as embodied in the primary sources (the Noble Qur'an and Prophetic traditions) showcasing various concepts through the experiences gained by the aspiring writers, propelling the light of Islam in poetic form. The aim and objective of this book are to provide access to the profiting, God-given teachings which guide and build humanity. This Miscellany of odes is a drop of water molecule in the ocean of Islamic knowledge, compiled to motivate the readers purely for the sake of Allah (Glory to Him, the Exalted). Book excerpt: This translation of Nizar Kabbani's poetry is accompanied by the striking Arabic texts of the poems, penned by Kabbani especially for this collection. Kabbani was a poet of great simplicity - direct, spontaneous, musical, using the language of everyday life. He was a ceasless campaigner for women's rights, and his verses praise the beauty of the female body, and of love. He was an Arab nationalist, yet he criticized Arab dictators and the lack of freedom in the Arab world.

Book Early Islamic Poetry and Poetics

Download or read book Early Islamic Poetry and Poetics written by Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of key studies on classical Arabic poetry (ca. 500-1000 C.E.), published over the last thirty-five years; the individual articles each deal with a different approach, period, genre, or theme. The major focus is on new interpretations of the form and function of the pre-eminent classical poetic genre, the polythematic qasida, or Arabic ode, particularly explorations of its ritual, ceremonial and performance dimensions. Other articles present the typology and genre characteristics of the short monothematic forms, especially the lyrical ghazal and the wine-poem. After thus setting out the full poetic genres and their structures, the volume turns in the remaining studies to the philological, rhetorical, stylistic and motival elements of classical Arabic poetry, in their etymological, symbolic, historical and comparatist dimensions. Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych's Introduction places the articles within the context of the major critical and methodological trajectories of the field and in doing so demonstrates the increasing integration of Arabic literary studies into contemporary humanistic scholarship. The Selected Bibliography complements the Introduction and the Articles to offer the reader a full overview of the past generation of Western literary and critical scholarship on classical Arabic poetry.

Ernst, William R.
