Book A Companion to Medieval Genoa

Download or read book A Companion to Medieval Genoa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Companion to Medieval Genoa introduces non-specialists to recent scholarship on the vibrant and source-rich medieval history of Genoa. Focusing mostly on the eleventh to fifteenth centuries, the volume positions the city of Genoa and the Genoese within the broader history of the Italian peninsula and the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Thematic contributions highlight the interdependence of local, regional, and international concerns, and serve as a helpful corrective to the traditional overemphasis of Florence and Venice in the English-language historiography of medieval Italy. The volume thus offers a fresh perspective on the history of medieval Italy—as well as a handy introduction to the riches of the Genoese archives—to undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars in related fields. Contributors are Ross Balzaretti, Carrie E. Beneš, Denise Bezzina, Roberta Braccia, Luca Filangieri, George L. Gorse, Paola Guglielmotti, Thomas Kirk, Sandra Macchiavello, Merav Mack, Jeffrey Miner, Rebecca Müller, Antonio Musarra, Sandra Origone, Giovanna Petti Balbi, Valeria Polonio, Gervase Rosser, Antonella Rovere, Stefan Stantchev, and Carlo Taviani.

Book Imperial Ambition in the Early Modern Mediterranean

Download or read book Imperial Ambition in the Early Modern Mediterranean written by Céline Dauverd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Imperial Ambition in the Early Modern Mediterranean Genoese Merchants and the Spanish Crown. This book examines the alliance between the Spanish Crown and Genoese merchant bankers in southern Italy throughout the early modern era, when Spain and Genoa developed a symbiotic economic relationship, undergirded by a cultural and spiritual alliance. Analyzing early modern imperialism, migration, and trade, this book shows that the spiritual entente between the two nations was mainly informed by the religious division of the Mediterranean Sea. The Turkish threat in the Mediterranean reinforced the commitment of both the Spanish Crown and the Genoese merchants to Christianity. Spain's imperial strategy was reinforced by its willingness to acculturate to southern Italy through organized beneficence, representation at civic ceremonies, and spiritual guidance during religious holidays. Celine Dauverd is Assistant Professor of History and a board member of the Mediterranean Studies Group at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research focuses on sociocultural relations between Spain and Italy during the early modern era (1450-1650). She has published articles in the Sixteenth Century Journal, the Journal of World History, Mediterranean Studies, and the Journal of Levantine Studies"--

Book The Colonies of Genoa in the Black Sea Region

Download or read book The Colonies of Genoa in the Black Sea Region written by Evgeny Khvalkov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the network of the Genoese colonies in the Black Sea area and their diverse multi-ethnic societies. It raises the problems of continuity of the colonial patterns, reveals the importance of the formation of the late medieval / early modern colonialism, the urban demography, and the functioning of the polyethnic entangled society of Caffa in its interaction with the outer world. It offers a novel interpretation of the functioning of this late medieval colonial polyethnic society and rejects the widely accepted narrative portraying the whole history of Caffa of the fifteenth century as a period of constant decline and depopulation.

Book Reinterpreting Genoese Civil Conflicts

Download or read book Reinterpreting Genoese Civil Conflicts written by Agostino Inguscio and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling new study of conflicts in Genoa surrounding the 12th century. This book takes on the established orthodoxy about the extent, nature and effects of family conflicts and other civil disputes in medieval Genoa. As Emanuele Ferragina writes in the Foreword, Inguscio “brings history and its complexity back in, and he does so in a clear and empirically informed way. For this reason, Inguscio’s analysis sheds a light on the study of conflict and violence in medieval Europe” and does so without assuming “a de-contextualised theory.” Because the monograph embraces context and does not hinge on previously accepted theory, Ferragina writes, “the interest in Agostino Inguscio’s account of civil conflict in medieval Genoa goes beyond the study of a medieval town in the 11th and 12th century.” The work enriches our understanding of this time of crucial transition in Europe and the use of history and economic methods to explain it. It is accessible to scholars — and to the general reader interested in a new look at an older time of family violence and political change. An insightful new addition to the History & Heroes Series from Quid Pro Books. Quality digital features include linked notes, active Contents, live URLs in notes, linked cross-references, and all the illustrations and references from the original print edition.
