Book Learning Frameworks First Year Experience Education 1300

Download or read book Learning Frameworks First Year Experience Education 1300 written by David H. Pyle (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course most offered by Community Colleges to enhance first-year student success focuses on facilitating students in academic transition from high school to higher education. The purpose of the first-year experience course is designed to increase tenacity, retention, completion, and personal advancement at the university level. Research is limited regarding the expectations and perceptions of college students as they matriculate into higher education. The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the congruence of expectations of students and faculty in the Student Success Course (SSC) at the Community College level. The study most influenced experiences identified by first-year students such as their expectations; the perceptions for the first year SSC; the academic, social and career – related expectations students have during their first year of college that they believe will lead them to success in college; the preparation levels for the SSC and the extent student and faculty expectations are in alignment. The study used a qualitative approach that probed student and faculty perceptions as it related to the student success course. Five first-year students enrolled in Education 1300, and five Education 1300 faculty were identified and volunteered for the study at a large suburban community college. A semi-structured interview guide and cognitive interviews were employed to collect data, and these interviews were transcribed into themes. Five themes emerged, and two related to prior experiences that identified first generation familial disconnect to the college experience and taking the SSC. Three themes related to student perceptions of college success were hybrid course scheduling, faculty interactions, and academic advising. Implications for researchers and practitioners are discussed.

Book Students Perceptions of Their First Year University Experience

Download or read book Students Perceptions of Their First Year University Experience written by L. Karen Soiferman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover some of the difficulties that first-year students have when they begin university. It was important to get the students to articulate those difficulties, in their own words, so that a better understanding could be attained. As expected, most of the difficulties centred on the institution itself. Students felt alienated from the university in terms of other students, the staff members, and their instructors. They were overwhelmed with the difference between their secondary schools and the university despite knowing that there would be differences. Some of the issues they dealt with when they first entered the university were very basic such as discovering where their classrooms were, where the washrooms were, and how to find the library. They also dealt with loneliness because they did not have friends who attended the same university and they found it difficult to make friends. In addition, the website for the university was bewildering and not easy to navigate for most of the students who responded to the survey. There were suggestions offered, by the students, as to what universities can do to better support and retain first-year students as they make the transition to higher education. An appendix contains the Survey on First Year Experience.

Book Understanding and Reducing College Student Departure

Download or read book Understanding and Reducing College Student Departure written by John M. Braxton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student departure is a long-standing problem to colleges and universities. Approximately 45 percent of students enrolled in two-year colleges depart during their first year, and approximately one out of four students departs from a four-year college or university. The authors advance a serious revision of Tinto's popular interactionalist theory to account for student departure, and they postulate a theory of student departure in commuter colleges and universities. This volume delves into the literature to describe exemplary campus-based programs designed to reduce student departure. It emphasizes the importance of addressing student departure through a multidisciplinary approach, engaging the whole campus. It proposes new models for nonresidential students and students from diverse backgrounds, and suggests directions for further research. Academic and student affairs administrators seeking research-based approaches to understanding and reducing student departure will profit from reading this volume. Scholars of the college student experience will also find it valuable in defining new thrusts in research on the student departure process.

Book First Year Students Early Perceptions and Expectations of University

Download or read book First Year Students Early Perceptions and Expectations of University written by Heidi Amberley Pepper and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a qualitative study exploring first year students' perceptions and expectations of their first year experience. Through a series of focus groups the researcher determined that first year students identified eleven themes as areas of concern and areas that contribute to the student perception of a successful year. These eleven themes fell within two broad categories of student defined success: academic performance and value, and independence and the development of the self. Successes in both of these areas lead to a successful year while a failure to meet one area had negative effects on the student and the perception of self.

Book Instructor Perceptions of First year Experience Courses

Download or read book Instructor Perceptions of First year Experience Courses written by Alexander Katz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored and described faculty members’ reports of their first-year experience courses in order to assess and compare whether the courses were consistent among the different institutions and the extent to which they incorporated Barefoot and Fidler’s (1996) nine course characteristics, the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ (2008) essential learning outcomes, and Kuh’s (2008) high-impact practices. The study was conducted at three universities in the Northeast. A multisite, case study design was chosen in order to gather in-depth reports from faculty of first-year experience course curricula at their respective institutions. The course director and two faculty members at each university participated in the study. Qualitative interviews provided data based upon questions formulated by the researcher. Additionally, participants provided copies of their course syllabi and other supplemental documents that related to their first-year experience courses. Overall, the results indicated variation in the first-year experience course curricula at the three institutions. Although all participants indicated that their courses are credit bearing, the number of credits varied, and the placement in the first-year curriculum was inconsistent. Two participants, at one university, reported that students’ GPAs in first-year experience courses are predictive of their first-semester GPAs. One consistency among all participants was that while they do not change the curriculum when first-generation college students are placed in their classes, they do find ways of providing additional support. Recommendations for practice and future research include the following: 1) Course content should consist of both academic and interdisciplinary content; 2) first-year experience courses should continue to include elements of the essential learning outcomes; 3) further research should explore the extent to which improvements in student learning have occurred; 4) further studies should continue identifying the needs of first-generation college students and exploring methods of assisting them during their college experiences.

Download or read book Leaving College written by Vincent Tinto and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1994 classic work on student retention, Vincent Tinto synthesizes far-ranging research on student attrition and on actions institutions can and should take to reduce it. The key to effective retention, Tinto demonstrates, is in a strong commitment to quality education and the building of a strong sense of inclusive educational and social community on campus. He applies his theory of student departure to the experiences of minority, adult, and graduate students, and to the situation facing commuting institutions and two-year colleges. Especially critical to Tinto’s model is the central importance of the classroom experience and the role of multiple college communities.

Book The Impact of College on Students

Download or read book The Impact of College on Students written by Kenneth A. Feldman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Kenneth Feldman and Theodore Newcomb review and synthesize the findings of more than 1,500 studies conducted over four decades on the subject. Writing in 1991, Ernest Pascarella and Patrick Terenzini maintained that The Impact of College on Students not only provided the first comprehensive conceptual map of generally uncharted terrain, but also generated a number of major hypotheses about how college influences students. They also noted that Feldman and Newcombe helped to stimulate a torrent of studies on the characteristics of collegiate institutions and how students change and benefit during and after their college years from college attendance. The Impact of College on Students is now a standard text in graduate courses as well as a standard and frequently cited reference for scholars, students, and administrators of higher education. Much of what we understand about the developmental influence of college is based on this work.
