Book Student Conduct Practice

Download or read book Student Conduct Practice written by James M. Lancaster and published by Stylus Publishing (VA). This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five expert practitioners and faculty present a compendium of current best practices in the administration of student conduct, a summary of present thinking on key issues facing practitioners today, and an overview of the role and status of conduct administrators within their institutions. The editors describe the profession's continuing quest to find its "voice" and clarify its critical contribution to student affairs practice, as it seeks to steer a path between legal process and creating a safe environment where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about and wrestle with the dilemmas that challenge their lives and threaten their success in college. Part One covers the structural considerations of student conduct administration. Chapters present the history and professional philosophy of conduct administration, review the ideal qualifications and personal characteristics for successful conduct administration practice and address the environment and governance framework in which administrators function. Edward Stoner II discusses his Model Student Code of Conduct and offers suggestions on using it to assess institutional practice. This section further reviews applicable law, policies and government mandates and presents guidance on the use of the range of available resolution forums. It culminates with a closer look at ethics and the decision-making process, student development theory, and the critical dimensions of diversity with respect to issues of social justice. Part Two examines contemporary issues affecting student conduct administration. These include incivility, first amendment concerns, mental health and student well being, diversity and its challenge to traditional notions of "typical" student needs, student organizational conduct, technology and information management and academic misconduct. The book concludes with a review of the present state of student conduct administration and expert views about its future direction, including the need for more research, better assessment of outcomes, and a continued emphasis upon the practice of student conduct administration as a dedicated profession. This is an essential companion for both new and established practitioners. This book is published on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of ASJA and coincides with the tenth anniversary of the publication of the earlier handbook, The Administration of Campus Discipline. Student Conduct Practice constitutes the handbook for the next decade.

Book A Case Study

Download or read book A Case Study written by Monica Proffitt Osborne and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, increased allegations of sexual misconduct have been reported on college campuses. In response, college administrators have put great effort into creating sexual misconduct programs designed to educate their students. Emphasis has been placed on establishing programs geared toward sexual assault awareness; preventing the vulnerabilities associated with sexual assaults on campus; and equipping students with the tools needed to safely intervene should they witness dating and sexual violence (Reingold & Gostin, 2015; Storer, Casey & Herrenkohl, 2016). Despite an across-the-board good-faith effort to safeguard and protect students, campus sexual assaults remain at an alarming high level (Storer et al., 2016). Generally speaking, too many of us associate sexual misconduct with four-year, residential colleges with intercollegiate athletic programs and fraternities and sororities not community colleges. Community colleges, however, are not immune to sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, domestic violence or intimate partner violence. As such, it is important for higher education administrators to adopt effective programs. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the literature regarding the specific sexual misconduct education programs offered at community colleges and the efficacy of the programming. This interpretivist case study examined the sexual misconduct educational programs currently in place at community colleges, the effectiveness of different program delivery platforms and the perceptions of students and Title IX administrators/responsible employees regarding the efficacy of sexual misconduct educational programming offered at community colleges. The study consisted of anonymous online student and administrative/responsible employee questionnaires, a focus group and discussion sessions with 7 students and 6 administrative one-on-one interviews at a suburban community college in the Northeast Region of the United States. Each of the two sets of questionnaires contained 20 semi-structured questions. Sixty-one students and 27 administrators/responsible employees completed the questionnaires. Triangulation was utilized to evaluate the trustworthiness of the various sources of data. Through data analysis, the researcher identified the following themes and sub-themes among the student participants: general program awareness, program specifics, i.e., shorter more frequent programs, shorter program sessions use of real-world video simulations/scenarios, interactive programming and peer-to-peer small group discussions, mandatory program attendance and perceptions of program efficacy. The students, for the most part, had a general awareness of the existence of sexual misconduct programming at their community college, but did not have a specific understanding of which programs, outside of the one they attended, were offered by their college or who on campus was responsible for providing sexual misconduct programming. Students thought sexual misconduct programming should be mandatory for all students and that program frequency and duration, interactive activities, peer-to-peer small group discussions and simulated real-world videos are instrumental in determining the effectiveness of program delivery platforms. The themes that surfaced once the researcher evaluated the administrator/responsible employee data were like the student themes: general program awareness, program specifics, i.e., shorter more frequent programs, shorter program sessions use of real-world video simulations/scenarios, interactive programming and peer-to-peer small group discussions, mandatory program attendance and perceptions of program efficacy. The administrators/responsible employees had an awareness of the sexual misconduct programming at their community college as well as the administrative personnel responsible for setting up the sexual misconduct educational programs. There was an overall belief that sexual misconduct programming should be mandatory for all students and that the program's duration impacts the effectiveness of the delivery. The administrators/responsible employees also opined that the most effective sexual misconduct delivery tools were interactive programming, simulated videos and/or peer-to-peer small group discussions. This case study was significant in that it identifies best practices for the community college Title IX administrators who are looking to adopt effective sexual misconduct education programming. Recommendations from the study included: (1) mandating incoming students attend sexual misconduct education programs at orientation and twice during each semester of their first year at a community college; (2) adopting monthly 30 minute interactive small group workshops to students; (3) incorporating real-world video simulations/scenarios and peer-to-peer discussion sessions in all sexual misconduct programming; and (4) offering sexual misconduct programming at times when classes are not offered.

Book Examining Academic Misconduct Liminality and Strain Among College Students

Download or read book Examining Academic Misconduct Liminality and Strain Among College Students written by Evan Kyle Springer and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was to examine academic misconduct, liminality, and strain among college students. This study utilized a quantitative approach to collect data from Sample A and Sample B populations at a public, regional, four-year university in the southeastern United States. Sample A participants consisted of a randomized sample of enrolled students at the sample site. Sample B participants consisted of students who had been found responsible for violating the sample site's academic misconduct policy. Each sample population completed a survey that consisted of nine academic misconduct items, 17 liminality items, and 17 strain items. The study utilized descriptive statistics and OLS regression modeling to analyze the data. A key finding of the study was unexpected: 44% of participants from Sample B indicated that they had never engaged in academic misconduct, even though all Sample B participants had been formally adjudicated and found responsible for academic misconduct at the sample site. Only 17% of Sample A participants indicated that they had engaged in academic misconduct. Finally, in a comparison of Sample A and Sample B participants regarding liminality and strain measures, OLS regression models revealed that college student age, race, sexual orientation, GPA, residence, and low self-confidence were significantly related to academic misconduct, liminality, and strain.
