Book Student and Faculty Perceptions of Accelerated Nursing Programs on the Nursing Shortage in the Mississippi Delta

Download or read book Student and Faculty Perceptions of Accelerated Nursing Programs on the Nursing Shortage in the Mississippi Delta written by Sheba Patrice Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine students' and faculty members' perceptions of the accelerated nursing programs at two colleges in the Mississippi Delta, Coahoma and Mississippi Delta Community College. The study centered on whether the age, race or gender of the students affected their perceptions of program support, key issues and challenges, and program limitations. The study explored differences in faculty and students' perceptions of the accelerated nursing program in regards to local support, nursing faculty, most complicated areas of the program (which were clinical and exams), and barriers. A quantitative research design was used for this study. The survey was the methodological framework that was employed in this investigation to collect the data. The participants consisted of 13 faculty members and 33 students of the accelerated nursing program at two community colleges. The procedure to gather data for this study was two surveys developed by the researcher. The data in this study were obtained by using an Independent t-test, ANOVA and descriptive statistics. The following were findings of this study. No significant differences found in students' perceptions of the accelerated nursing program by age or gender. Significant differences were found in students' perceptions of the accelerated nursing program by race. The differences found were that Caucasians had a more positive perception than African Americans of salary attracting them to stay and work in the Mississippi Delta. Caucasians also had a more positive perception than African Americans that clinical is the most complicated area of the nursing program. In addition, Caucasians had a more positive perception than African Americans that transportation was a program barrier. Overall, faculty perceptions of the accelerated nursing program varied. Significant differences were found when students' and faculty perceptions were compared. The differences found were that students felt positive about the exams being the most complicated area of the program and the faculty disagreed. The other difference found was that faculty had a negative feeling toward their college lacking financial support from the local area, while students had a positive feeling.

Book Persistence Factors Described by Nursing Students of African Descent

Download or read book Persistence Factors Described by Nursing Students of African Descent written by Claudettte R. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High attrition rates among nursing students of African descent have resulted in a nursing workforce that lacks diversity. Research has largely focused on the obstacles facing students who dropped out of their nursing programs, including financial constraints, academic issues, and personal challenges. Few studies have considered the students who persisted. The purpose of this qualitative dissertation study was to examine the factors that contributed to the persistence of students of African descent enrolled in nursing programs in community colleges as described in the stories and reflections of recently graduated alumni. Data was obtained with the use of two research questions (1) What stories do recently graduated registered nurses tell about their nursing programs in community colleges, the nursing faculty, their peers and the curriculum? (2) What stories do recently graduated nurses of African descent tell about the factors contributing to their persistence in community college (non-cognitive and cultural factors)? Participants were 15 registered nurses of African descent who have successfully completed five different nursing programs at community colleges and have graduated within the past five years. Two semi-structured one-to-one interviews were conducted to examine success strategies utilized by nursing students of African descent at community colleges. Data analysis revealed three themes: 1) Early departure of new nurses 2). Stringent nursing program failure policies 3) A triad of success strategies. Each of these themes provide evidence to support the reasons, obstacles and tools to increase the number of nursing students of African descent graduating from community colleges every year. The major findings of this study include program policies that were not student friendly, the significance of peer support and the value of a study plan early in the curriculum. Two key recommendations resulting from this study are Community College nursing programs and curriculum need to be revised to take into consideration the current landscape of events in healthcare and adequate remediation courses following course failure with an earlier return to the program. Conclusions were formulated based on the revealed need for facilitators of retention programs to adopt suggested ways that would embed knowledge of these success strategies into their programs resulting in improved course completion rates.

Book Perceptions of Race Status and Instructional Modality as Predictors of Degree Attainment for African American Male Community College Students

Download or read book Perceptions of Race Status and Instructional Modality as Predictors of Degree Attainment for African American Male Community College Students written by Roderick C. Lewis (Sr.) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the large number of students who begin their college education yet never graduate, it is essential that, as higher education leaders and policymakers develop student success strategies, they consider the persistence and degree attainment dynamics of all populations. This study focuses on the problem of degree attainment from the perspective of male, second-year, African American, community college students. A qualitative narrative case study approach was used to ascertain their perception of race, status attainment, and instructional learning modalities as predictors of degree attainment. Accordingly, those perceptions were then evaluated to determine their utility as predictors of degree attainment. Six students were recruited via electronically distributed flyers and participated in semistructured interviews via Zoom. The research questions focused on these students’ perceptions of learning modalities and additional supports offered at their community college, how status attainment impacted their academic persistence, and what these male, second-year, African American, community college students perceived as institutional barriers to degree attainment. The data were hand-coded and revealed 11 emergent themes. The emergent themes were further analyzed using NVivo, revealing three primary themes categorized as follows: (a) Representation, (b) Support and (c) Race. The findings revealed that in as much as the research participants embraced the challenges within their learning environment, they perceived the need for additional support services, which they felt would contribute to retention and eventual degree attainment. Moreover, the findings also revealed that while the student generally did not experience overt racism, they still perceived institutional barriers to degree attainment grounded in implicitly biased interactions on campus. Accordingly, the perceived biases influenced these students’ perception of status as it relates to a student’s perception of self and how others view him, and also a perception of self within the context of economic and social status. Hence, this study discusses these findings and provides new insights into predictors of academic persistence and degree attainment of African American, male, community college students. Keywords: Achievement gap, community college, degree attainment, first time in college (FTIC), persistence, race

Book A Qualitative Examination of the Support Systems Impacting the African American Student Persistence Retention and Graduation at a Predominantly White Research extensive Land grant Midwestern University

Download or read book A Qualitative Examination of the Support Systems Impacting the African American Student Persistence Retention and Graduation at a Predominantly White Research extensive Land grant Midwestern University written by Elijah Andre Thorn and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completion of a college degree serves as an necessity for many individuals who want to transform their lives, change their socio-economic status and have a better chance of living the "American Dream." For African Americans, students completing a college degree can be challenging due to some significant academic and institutional barriers. The current research is replete with studies highlighting why students leave higher educational institutions. However, African American students throughout this nation persist and graduate despite some seemingly insurmountable odds. Through the use of Critical Race Theory and phenomenology as the methodological framework, this study examined the lived experiences of African American students' academic and social engagement and how they have impacted the retention, persistence and graduation of participants. Purposeful sampling procedures were employed to recruit thirteen participants and the researcher adhered to Seidman's (1998) model of a three-interview sequence and arrived at five overarching themes that emerged. A) Not my first Choice, B) Fitting in and being isolated, C) Racial Aggressions, D) Resilience/Personal strength and/or "I have something to prove" and E) What's missing. A Conclusion and recommendations for research practice and policy is also discussed within the context of this study.
