Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book discusses various methods that have been used from early times to the present for the isolation and characterization of total tRNA, specific tRNAs, and small molecular weight RNAs. Filled with tables and figures, it presents comparative methods and provides an overview of the progress from a historical perspective. The text features chapters on special and recent methods, isolation of tRNA from specific sources, such as chloroplasts and mitochondria, purification, and identification of modified nucleotides. It also covers suppressor tRNAs, aminoacyl tRNA synthetases, and tRNA genes. This volume is an excellent resource for all biological chemists, microbiologists, and researchers.

  • Author : Edward R. Leadbetter
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1461308038
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Bacteria in Nature written by Edward R. Leadbetter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of studies of monotypic populations is constantly argued in bacterial ecology. The controversy itself is evidenceofthe strong awareness that bacterial activities in natural sites are not determined by the bacteria alone. At the same time, the best evidence that bacteria are influenced by environmental factors is the contrast between their behavior in laboratory cultures and their relatively subdued influence when in the presence of com petitors, predators, and fluctuating-often stressful-environmental conditions. Monotypic populations are admittedly reductionist, but are not therefore irrelevant to bacterial ecology. Quite the contrary. Without pure culture studies, our understanding of important and applicable bacterial activities-N fixation, for example-would still be z limited to what we could discern from a comparison of events in steamed vis-a-vis un heated soil. As was evident throughout the previous volume in this treatise, practically any method of studying natural bacterial communities upsets them while permitting only limited assessment of the respective qualities and quantitative contributions to total com munity activity of each type of bacterium present. Total activity itself is difficult to assess and is not dependably accomplished by any single method. This third volume comprises information regarding the properties of bacteria as they have been learned largely from pure culture studies. Its purpose is twofold: to provide readers with fundamental information regarding the cellular organization, physiological capabilities, and genetic systems of bacteria; and to connect known bacterial properties with environmental influences on them and with their influences on natural processes.

Book The Aminoacyl tRNA Synthetases

Download or read book The Aminoacyl tRNA Synthetases written by Michael Ibba and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By virtue of their role as catalysts of the aminoacylation reaction, the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases ensure that the first step of translation is performed quickly and accurately. In this volume of 36 separate chapters, the many facets of this ancient and ubiquitous family are reviewed, including their surprising structural diversity, enzymology, tRNA interaction properties, and curious alternative functions. These chapters illustrate the degree to which the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases employ a variety of mechanisms to carry out both the standard functions related to the synthesis of aminoacylated tRNA for protein synthesis, as well as the surprising functions associated with amino acid biosynthesis, cytokine function, and even the processivity of DNA replication. Other chapters explore the regulation of their synthesis, their role in disease, and their prospects as targets for antibacterial therapeutics. This monograph will be a valuable resource for all scientists interested in the fundamentals of protein synthesis from both a basic research and clinical perspective, as well as the relation of translational components to the evolution of the genetic code.

Book excerpt: Gene Expression provides research papers on selected topics in gene expression, presented at the 11th meeting of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies, held at Copenhagen in August 1977. The book presents research knowledge provided by eminent researchers in the field of biochemistry. Each chapter contains material that is important to other researchers, such as on initiation mechanism of protein synthesis in prokaryotes; translocation mechanism of the ribosome; and analysis of ribosomal translocation by drugs. Mechanisms for the intracellular compartmentation of newly synthesized proteins; RNA synthesis and control; the sub-structure of nucleosome core particles; and future prospects on chromosome structure and function are detailed as well. The text will be of use to researchers and workers in the field of medicine, pharmacology, gene therapy, and biochemistry.
