Book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin

Download or read book Geological Exploration in Murzuq Basin written by D. Worsley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-12-19 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murzuq Basin is a large intracratonic sag basin located in southwestern Libya. Exploration efforts started in this vast and remote Saharan region already in 1957 and 60 exploratory wells have been drilled to date, resulting in over 20 discoveries with around 4,000 million barrels of oil in place. Most discoveries have been made in Ordovician sandstone reservoirs sourced by hot shales of the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Oil is already being produced and exported from the area, but the basin's total hydrocarbon potential is still poorly understood. Recent exploration - especially the major discovery and initial development of the Giant "Elephant" Field - has greatly increased interest for the area's potential. Many petroleum geologists and companies now believe that the basin may well develop into a new major hydrocarbon province which will significantly contribute to Europe's energy needs in the next decades. This book presents papers from a conference held at Sebha University - on the eastern margins of the Murzug Basin - in September 1998.The book continues an ongoing series of presentations of the geology of Libya, but the 25 contributions herein mostly centre on the Murzuq Basin itself and on nearby areas. There are still many unresolved questions in terms of geological and hydrocarbon exploration in these difficult desert areas, but the papers herein will hopefully present a first comprehensive overview of an exciting frontier exploration region. About half of the papers are directly related to hydrocarbon exploration, and to source rock and reservoir development, but a wide variety of other features are also described, ranging from palaeontology and biostratigraphy to ore geology and water resources, covering the entire geological column from the Precambrian to the Holocene. The book concludes with a bibliography covering all geological aspects of this challenging but very promising frontier area.

Book Hydrocarbon Production Potential of the Niobrara Formation in the Kennedy Basin

Download or read book Hydrocarbon Production Potential of the Niobrara Formation in the Kennedy Basin written by Kelsey Ryan Marzolf and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation and synthesis of reservoir and basin characteristics in light of technological advances in reservoir modeling, drilling and production techniques can provide new insights into identification of potential hydrocarbon accumulations within the Niobrara Formation in the Kennedy Basin in south central South Dakota. The Rosebud Indian Reservation of Todd County in south central South Dakota resides within the Kennedy Basin and contains deposits of the Niobrara Formation from 1,300-1,600 feet below the surface. Lithology of the Niobrara Formation is described as calcareous grey platy shale or marl intermixed with limestone. The Niobrara Formation was deposited during the Early Cretaceous Period. Previous gas shows in the Kennedy Basin have led to the investigation of hydrocarbon development from the Niobrara Formation in South Dakota. This formation has the potential to produce and store hydrocarbons due to historic gas shows in the region and location in the Kennedy basin. The remote location of the Rosebud Reservation in addition to the rising cost of energy necessitates the need for a clean, reliable and affordable energy source for the residents' growing population. Samples taken from three exposures in South Dakota were used for lithologic interpretation. Published geologic quadrangles, cross-sections, geophysical logs, well data and correlation charts were utilized to construct structure contour and isochore maps. Using these detailed maps of the Niobrara Formation in Todd County, it was feasible to establish potential locations for exploratory drill sites. Funding for this project was provided by a grant through the United States Department of Energy, American Indian Research and Education Initiative (DE-ED0000129). Structure contour and isochore maps of the Niobrara Formation were produced in Petrel and ArcMap to interpret the test hole information. Each interpretation shows an area along the eastern edge of Todd County with the potential to produce and store biogenic gas according to underlying structure, lineaments and historical gas shows. This structurally high area is approximately 1,200 feet in elevation and rises easterly to 1,250 feet in Tripp County. Thickness is approximately 250 feet thick, surrounded by thinner areas of 150 feet to the north and south of Todd County. Porosity values found on the structural high reach 45% but resistivity values are only 8 ohms. Considering historical gas shows, these values could indicate saline pore water chemistry accompanied by hydrocarbons.
