Book Structural Analysis and Modeling for Command Decisions During Fire on Board Ship

Download or read book Structural Analysis and Modeling for Command Decisions During Fire on Board Ship written by Yevgeniy Nikitin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examine opportunities for the application of information technology through mathematical modeling and design of a new method of a ship's space monitoring for the support of command decisions during a fire aboard. Thesis analyzes peculiarities of a fire and difficulties inherent in gathering data, particularly the lack of objective information about a fire scale, fire dynamics, and timing of functioning the ship's equipment during an emergency aboard. It was shown that, in a closed compartment, a gas pressure monitoring is a very perspective way of determining a fire scale and its propagation ability. The appropriate models of fire development were created. They were designed in a way of using only those data that were possible to observe during a fire aboard. Depending on availability and quality of current information about the fire, an informative tree of alternative scenarios of the fire hazard analysis and command decisions was developed. Conducted in terms of decision theory concept, formalization of fire-fighting procedure permitted to accomplish structural and cost benefit analysis of the command decisions during a fire aboard. Relevant chronological decision tree diagrams were designed. Structural analysis proved that application of information technology and new method of gas pressure monitoring significantly increases efficiency of command decisions during a fire without considerable additional costs.

Book Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability

Download or read book Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability written by M.S. Chislett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Decision Modeling for Analyzing Fire Action Outcomes

Download or read book Decision Modeling for Analyzing Fire Action Outcomes written by Donald G. MacGregor and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A methodology for incident decomposition and reconstruction is developed based on the concept of an "event-frame model." The event-frame model characterizes a fire incident in terms of (a) environmental events that pertain to the fire and the fire context (e.g., fire behavior, weather, fuels) and (b) management events that represent responses to the fire environment. The model defines a sequential set of event- frames according to temporal and contextual factors (e.g., management processes) that yield a visual representation of an incident decomposition. The set of event- frames decomposes an incident into discrete units of analysis that can incorporate other models or processes (e.g., decision analysis) to describe decision elements of a fire incident. Based on the reconstructions reported here, we find that decision processes differ according to the incident and its events. From the reconstruction of the Old Fire, we identified how some incident decisions are actually legacy decisions. These are for anticipated incidents-ones for which even extreme occurrences have been envisioned and action contingencies established. From the reconstruction of the Fork Fire, decision modeling revealed that local knowledge plays a key role in early management stages as well as in management decision-making several days into an incident. Our analysis reaffirms that although fire is a continuous, exponential process that changes seamlessly, if abruptly at times, management is a discrete process that changes linearly and in discontinuous stages with the intention of avoiding a purely reactionary management response. However, this fundamental incompatibility between fire as a nonlinear, continuous process and management as a linear and discontinuous one means that discontinuities in management processes may impede management performance.

Book Analysis of the Failure Mechanism of Shipboard Structural Members Exposed to Fire

Download or read book Analysis of the Failure Mechanism of Shipboard Structural Members Exposed to Fire written by Robin Lee Hiddemen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to analyze the behavior of a typical ship structural member exposed to fire. Included in this work are chapters pertaining to the modelling of the fire process and the structural member to be analyzed. After determining the expected temperature exposure of a shipboard structural member, a heat transfer analysis is carried out and the resulting load is subsequently used in the failure analysis. The major thrust of this study is the analysis of the failure mechanism of the collapse of an I beam. Two methods of analysis developed by Kecman, and Hayduk and Wierzbicki, are summarized and applied to the case of a fire load. The reduced moments due to fire exposure are determined and finally recommendations are offered for the use of this information in ship structural design.

  • Pages : 419 pages

Download or read book The Domain Theory written by Alistair Sutcliffe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this book about patterns? Yes and no. It is about software reuse and representation of knowledge that can be reapplied in similar situations; however, it does not follow the classic Alexandine conventions of the patterns community--i.e. Problem- solution- forces- context- example, etc. Chapter 6 on claims comes close to classic patterns, and the whole book can be viewed as a patterns language of abstract models for software engineering and HCI. So what sort of patterns does it contain? Specifications, conceptual models, design advice, but sorry not code. Plenty of other C++ code pattern books (see PLOP series). Nearest relative in published patterns books are Fowler's (1995) Analysis Patterns: Reusable object models and Coad, North and Mayfield. What do you mean by a Domain Theory? Not domains in the abstract mathematical sense, but domains in the knowledge--natural language sense, close to the everyday meaning when we talk about the application domain of a computer system, such as car rental, satellite tracking, whatever. The book is an attempt to answer the question ' what are the abstractions behind car rental, satellite tracking' so good design solutions for those problems can be reused. I work in industry, so what's in it for me? A new way of looking at software reuse, ideas for organizing a software and knowledge reuse program, new processes for reusing knowledge in requirements analysis, conceptual modeling and software specification. I am an academic, should I be interested? Yes if your research involves software engineering, reuse, requirements engineering, human computer interaction, knowledge engineering, ontologies and knowledge management. For teaching it may be useful for Master courses on reuse, requirements and knowledge engineering. More generally if you are interested in exploring what the concept of abstraction is when you extend it beyond programming languages, formal specification, abstract data types, etc towards requirements and domain knowledge. ADDITIONAL COPY: Based on more than 10 years of research by the author, this book is about putting software reuse on a firmer footing. Utilizing a multidisciplinary perspective--psychology and management science, as well as software--it describes the Domain Theory as a solution. The domain theory provides an abstract theory that defines a generic, reusable model of domain knowledge. Providing a comprehensive library of reusable models, practice methods for reuse, and theoretical insight, this book: *introduces the subject area of reuse and software engineering and explains a framework for comparing different reuse approaches; *develops a metric-oriented framework to assess the reuse claims of three competing approaches: patterns, ERPs, and the Domain Theory OSMs (object system models); *explains the psychological background for reuse and describes generic tasks and meta-domains; *introduces claims that provide a representation of design knowledge attached to Domain Theory models, as well as being a schema for representing reusable knowledge in nearly any form; *reports research that resulted from the convergence of the two theories; *describes the methods, techniques, and guidelines of design for reuse--the process of abstraction; and *elaborates the framework to investigate the future of reuse by different paradigms, generation of applications from requirements languages, and component-based software engineering via reuse libraries.
