Book The Electric Interurban Railways in America

Download or read book The Electric Interurban Railways in America written by George Woodman Hilton and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1964 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most colorful yet neglected eras in American transportation history is re-created in this definitive history of the electric interurbans. Built with the idea of attracting short-distance passenger traffic and light freight, the interurbans were largely constructed in the early 1900s. The rise of the automobile and motor transport caused the industry to decline after World War I, and the depression virtually annihilated the industry by the middle 1930s. Part I describes interurban construction, technology, passenger and freight traffic, financial history, and final decline and abandonment. Part II presents individual histories (with route maps) of the more than 300 companies of the interurban industry. Reviews "A first-rate work of such detail and discernment that it might well serve as a model for all corporate biographies. . . . A wonderfully capable job of distillation." —Trains "Few economic, social, and business historians can afford to miss this definitive study." —Mississippi Valley Historical Review "All seekers after nostalgia will be interested in this encyclopedic volume on the days when the clang, clang of the trolley was the most exciting travel sound the suburbs knew." —Harper's Magazine "A fascinating and instructive chapter in the history of American transportation." —Journal of Economic History "The hint that behind the grand facade of scholarship lies an expanse of boyish enthusiasm is strengthened by a lovingly amassed and beautifully reproduced collection of 37 photographs." —The Nation

Book San Francisco s Interurban to San Mateo

Download or read book San Francisco s Interurban to San Mateo written by Robert Townley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's strange to think that an electric commuter rail line rivaling BART in efficiency, speed, and comfort ran over 100 years ago between San Francisco and San Mateo, but run it did. The 40 Line, or San Mateo Interurban, began in 1892 with an initial segment operating between Market and Steuart Streets out to the county limits on San Jose Avenue. Three years later, the line reached Baden in present-day South San Francisco, and by 1903 service was opened all the way to downtown San Mateo. During the line's heyday, there was talk of extending it down the peninsula from San Mateo to Palo Alto to connect with the Peninsular Railway to San Jose. The 1906 earthquake put this plan on hold. Following much the same route as today's Mission Street, El Camino Real, and Caltrain, the San Mateo Interurban carried over four million passengers a year along its main and spur lines until 1949, when the system was shut down amidst much fanfare.

Book Street and Interurban Railroads 1855 1955

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this book is to alert the reader to over 3,000 publications on the rise and fall of the classic street and interurban railroad. It has made a special effort to go back and present many early publications that cover the introduction of this form of transportation as a central actor in the growth of every North American city. A detailed index is provided and this shows the corporate name of hundreds of railroads, names of cities, and the names of certain major players in the expansion of street railroads. Entries are given for cars and equipment, motors and controllers, car builders, strikes, statistics, and so on. It includes most of the books issued by major publishers, as well as dissertations and federal government documents. Publications for the major professional organizations involved over a hundred year period are also provided. I sincerely hope you find items of interest.
