  • Author : Lisa Mummery Gartland
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-05-16
  • ISBN : 1136564209
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Heat Islands written by Lisa Mummery Gartland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat islands are urban and suburban areas that are significantly warmer than their surroundings. Traditional, highly absorptive construction materials and a lack of effective landscaping are their main causes. Heat island problems, in terms of increased energy consumption, reduced air quality and effects on human health and mortality, are becoming more pressing as cities continue to grow and sprawl. This comprehensive book brings together the latest information about heat islands and their mitigation. The book describes how heat islands are formed, what problems they cause, which technologies mitigate heat island effects and what policies and actions can be taken to cool communities. Internationally renowned expert Lisa Gartland offers a comprehensive source of information for turning heat islands into cool communities. The author includes sections on cool roofing and cool paving, explains their benefits in detail and provides practical guidelines for their selection and installation. The book also reviews how and why to incorporate trees and vegetation around buildings, in parking lots and on green roofs.

Book A common Nordic end user market

    Book Details:
  • Author : Berit Tennbakk
  • Publisher : Nordic Council of Ministers
  • Release : 2014-07-11
  • ISBN : 9289328304
  • Pages : 59 pages

Download or read book A common Nordic end user market written by Berit Tennbakk and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementation of the Energy Efficiency Directive in the Nordic countries may affect the development of a common Nordic end-user market in electricity. As the period up to 2020 is too short to develop harmonized energy efficiency policy measures, we expect to see a continuation of a system of current national measures to promote energy efficiency in the Nordic countries. Generally, non-harmonized policy instruments do not need to counteract competition in a common end-user market as long as the suppliers are not given a specific role in managing energy efficiency schemes. Hence, adverse effects on cross-border competition may be mitigated by avoiding obligations on suppliers or by harmonizing such obligations among the Nordic countries.

The workshop—whose proceedings are documented in this publication prepared under the Law and Policy Reform Program of the Office of the General Counsel—focused on addressing the slow uptake of energy efficiency solutions by identifying the political, governance, and financial constraints in implementing energy efficiency solutions, and considering innovative policy, regulatory, and financial remedies for overcoming these constraints.

Book Policies and Programs for Sustainable Energy Innovations

Download or read book Policies and Programs for Sustainable Energy Innovations written by Tugrul U. Daim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume features research and case studies across a variety of industries to showcase technological innovations and policy initiatives designed to promote renewable energy and sustainable economic development. The first section focuses on policies for the adoption of renewable energy technologies, the second section covers the evaluation of energy efficiency programs and the final section provides evaluations of energy technology innovations. Environmental concerns, energy availability and political pressure have prompted governments to look for alternative energy resources that can minimize the undesirable effects for current energy systems. For example, shifting away from the conventional fuel resources and increasing the percentage of electricity generated from renewable resources, such as solar and wind power, is an opportunity to guarantee lower CO2 emissions and to create better economic opportunities for citizens in the long run. Including discussions of such of timely topics and issues as global warming, bio-fuels and nuclear energy, the editors and contributors to this book provide a wealth of insights and recommendations for sustainable energy innovations.

Download or read book Reality Check written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the myriad challenges posed by global climate change, countries at all income levels have put in place a diverse set of policies over the past three decades. Many governments have already made significant progress in their efforts to decarbonize, creating a rich history of implementation experiences that provides important lessons for how to successfully advance climate policy goals in a variety of different economic, cultural, and political contexts. Despite this progress, the transition to a net zero future continues to face significant barriers, including the need for large investment, a lack of institutional capacity, and challenging political economy issues. Reality Check: Lessons from 25 Policies Advancing a Low-Carbon Future identifies key policy approaches that countries are taking to decarbonize their economies. The report classifies policies into five categories: • Planning for a future with zero net emissions • Getting the pricing and taxes right • Facilitating and triggering transitions in key systems, such as energy and food • Getting the finance flowing, particularly by incentivizing private sector investment • Ensuring a just transition that protects the poor. Reality Check: Lessons from 25 Policies Advancing a Low-Carbon Future fills a critical research gap by documenting low-carbon policy trends and providing a series of case studies across sectors and geographies. The 25 case studies furnish country contexts and policy details, examine results and impacts, and outline key takeaways and lessons learned for enabling further ambition in achieving emissions reductions. The report contributes to an evolving analytical agenda on how to reduce carbon emissions while achieving economic development and the strategic transition to a greener, more resilient, and more inclusive future.
