This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Oliver Hazard Perry for Young Readers A very long time ago, there lived in England a young Quaker whose name was Edmund Perry. At that time the Quakers were much persecuted. They were a quiet and peace-loving people, and would not serve in the army. They had their own religious meetings, and refused to pay money for the support of the Church of England. For these reasons, they were imprisoned, beaten, and driven from their homes. Edmund Perry believed that the Quakers were right, and he could not endure these persecutions. So, in 1650, he came to America to live. Thirty years before that time, a company of Pilgrims had left England because they also wished to be free to worship God as they chose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed for his decisive victory over a Royal Navy squadron on Lake Erie in September 1813 and best known for his after-action report proclamation We have met the enemy and they are ours, Oliver Hazard Perry was one the early U.S. Navy s most famous heroes. In this modern, scholarly reassessment of the man and his career, Professor David Skaggs emphasizes Perry s place in naval history as an embodiment of the code of honor, an exemplar of combat courage, and a symbol of patriotism to his fellow officers and the American public. It is the first biography of Perry to be published in more than a quarter of a century and the first to offer an even-handed analysis of his career. After completing a thorough examination of primary sources, Skaggs traces Perry s development from a midshipman to commodore where he personified the best in seamanship, calmness in times of stress, and diplomatic skills. But this work is not a hagiographic treatment, for it offers a candid analysis of Perry s character flaws, particularly his short temper and his sometimes ineffective command and control procedures during the battle of Lake Erie. Skaggs also explains how Perry s short but dramatic naval career epitomized the emerging naval professionalism of the young republic, and he demonstrates how the Hero of Lake Erie fits into the most recent scholarship concerning the role of post-revolutionary generation in the development of American national identity. Finally, Skaggs explores in greater detail than anyone before the controversy over the conduct of his Lake Erie second, Jesse Duncan Elliott, that raged on for over a quarter century after Perry's death in 1819.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Oliver Hazard Perry The ingratitude of Republics to their distinguished benefactors and heroes, has long been proverbial. But this opinion, like many others with relation to Republican governments, had its origin in the examples of Greece and Rome, and so far as it imparts that ingratitude to those who render important services to their country, is peculiar to, or in any way a consequence of, Republican institutions, is entirely unfounded. We speak of the sense of a nation, not of its policy. That the policy of monarchial and aristocratical governments, is different from that of Republics with relation to this subject, is admitted. The former are governments of men, the latter of laws. They are founded not only upon different principles, but upon those which are directly opposite. The former is established upon the basis of social distinctions - the latter upon that of the equality of mankind. - To exalt and ennoble a few, at the expense of the rest, is not only consistent with the general views and policy of a monarchial government, but forms a part of the government itself. Download or read book Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie Classic Reprint written by James Cooke Mills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oliver Hazard Perry and the Battle of Lake Erie Who among all true Americans does not cherish the memory of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Grant, and Farragut, and of other patriots, whose deeds of valor and achievements of state have moulded our national progress? Among these patriots was another - the immortal Hero of Erie - upon whom was be stowed all the attributes that give lustre to valorous action and chivalrous self - devotion to the cause of his country; blended with modesty, kindness, courtesy, and With lively sympathies for humanity. To place the deeds and public services of Oliver Hazard Perry before his countrymen, of the present and succeeding generations, in a complete and enduring form, to show his true character, to depict his virtues without concealing his faults, is the purpose of this work. It is not intended to be an eulogy upon him, but a faithful history of the events of his life, so far as they are deemed of interest or of any importance in appreciating his character. If, however, some passages may seem to be unduly laden with praise, it is because the author has found it impossible, after delving into old and authenticated records of a century ago, to give a true account of the short but troubled life of Com modore Perry, without indulging in enthusiasm for the nobility of his character and for the important nature of his public services.
