Book excerpt: Twelfth-century France has been described as the key to many of the most important developments of medieval civilization. Nowhere is this description more accurate than in the domain of poetic invention. The years 1050 to 1200 witnessed the development of a brilliant body of vernacular narrative that not only expressed the complexity of its own time but also bequeathed to posterity a wide gamut of creative possibilities. Although much has been written about the works of this period, Karl Uitti offers the first critically orientated overview of this poetry as poetry. In the sections devoted to the Songs of Alexis and Roland he studies the narrative as it serves, in various ways, truths exterior to its own organization. These include the implications of Alexis' imitation of Christ and the way the Song of Roland is history conceived in literary and poetic terms. Although a number of devices are examined, the poems are seen in terms of their total significance. The second part of the book, dedicate principally to the œuvre of Chrétien de Troyes, discusses a new kind of poetry, poetry whose truth depends on the reader's submitting entirely to the internal coherence of each work—in a very meaningful sense the poem itself is the thing. What it says is specifically a matter of how it says it. No higher claim for the dignity of poetic activity has ever been made. Originally published in 1973. Were boundaries always clear between childhood and young adulthood? Was medieval childhood gendered? Scholars have been debating such questions over half a century. Can evidence from imaginative literature test the conclusions of historians? Phyllis Gaffney's innovative book reveals contrast and change in the portrayal of childhood and youth by looking at vernacular French narratives composed between 1100 and 1220. Covering over sixty poems from two major genres - epic and romance - she traces a significant evolution. While early epics contain only a few stereotypical images of the child, later verse narratives display a range of arguably timeless motifs, as well as a growing awareness of the special characteristics of youth. Whereas juvenile epic heroes contribute to the adult agenda by displaying precocious strength and wisdom, romance children are on the receiving end, requiring guidance and education. Gaffney also profiles the intriguing phenomenon of enfances poems, singing the youthful deeds of established heroes: these 'prequels' combine epic and romance features in distinctive ways. Approaching the history of childhood and youth through the lens of literary genre, this study shows how imaginative texts can both shape and reflect the historical development and cultural construction of emotional values.

The study focuses on the epic cycle known as "the geste of Saint Gille," including Aiol and Elie de Saint Gille. The poems in manuscript were produced in the context of the opulent francophone Flemish courts of the mid-to-late thirteenth century. The manuscript (known as BNF fr 25516) is richly illuminated, and the study includes the popular Beuves de Hanstone, forerunner of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the poem Robert le Diable, later becoming meyerbeer's celebrated opera. Concluding with the comparative study of BNF fr 24403's epic treatment of the only illuminated version of Chretien de Troyes' first Arthurian work, Erec et Enide, and the Sancti Bertini version of La Chevalerie Vivien, the first dated collection of epics made for a prominent northern Bishop, this study introduces the hitherto little-explored world of medieval illumination and epic narrative poetics. A second chapter assesses the Chanson's value as a source for the crusade, and a third considers its status as a literary text. A complete prose translation follows, the first in English and based on the definitive edition. The Chanson is revealed as a lively narrative, with tales of chivalry, villainy, and even episodes of humour. There are extensive footnotes to the translation, and an appendix provides supplementary material from a different manuscript tradition. There is also a cast list of heroes and villains with biographical information for the 'real' ones and literary analogues for the fictional characters. The Chanson d'Antioche can now be read for enjoyment, and for a whole new perspective on crusading in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
