Book Beans Roots and Leaves

Download or read book Beans Roots and Leaves written by Paul Bernard Foley and published by Tectum Verlag DE. This book was released on 2003 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinsonism of various types has long been a debilitating and cruel affliction for significant numbers of people, and even today the cure remains elusive. The present volume explores the colorful and sometimes alarming history of the attempts to provide at least some relief from the symptoms of this disorder, commencing with interesting reports from ancient India and medieval Europe and continuing until the present time. Especial attention is devoted to L-DOPA therapy, still the leading pharmacological approach to the disorder more than forty years after its first application, and its place in the development of neurochemistry. But the employment of solanaceous plant alkaloid-based therapies, which dominated antiparkinsonian therapy until the mid-20th century, and the broad range of other approaches which found varying degrees of popularity, including those stimulated by the encephalitis epidemic which appeared in Europe during the First World War, are also discussed. The author concludes that antiparkinsonian therapy was never 'irrational', but was rather always determined by prevailing medical, pharmacological and scientific paradigms, so that its history is inextricably linked with experimental and clinical developments in these fields.

Book Vincent Van Gogh

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wilfred Niels Arnold
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 1992-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Vincent Van Gogh written by Wilfred Niels Arnold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a five year old I encountered a picture of a young man in a rakish hat and a yellow coat, on the wall of a large classroom. There was something instantly intriguing about the image, but it was also puzzling because it represented neither politician nor prince, the usual fare for Australian school decorations. I was eventually told that this was a reproduction of a painting, the artist was Vincent van Gogh, and that the subject was some young Frenchman. On special days we assembled in that room and during the next several years I found myself gazing beyond visiting speakers at the fellow in the yellow jacket. It was almost another fifty years before I felt properly conversant with the portrait and realized that van Gogh's subject, Armand Roulin, was seventeen at the time ofthe original painting and had died at seventy-four during my schoolboy contemplations. In the interim my enjoyment of the works of the Impressionists and Post Impressionists had grown and I occasionally ran into the name of Dr. Gachet, Vincent's last attending physician, in books and catalog essays. The doctor was my entree to the overlapping charms of medical and art histories. In 1987 I had the good fortune to participate as a biochemist in the centenary celebration of the Pasteur Institut in Paris.

Download or read book Turner Syndrome written by Patricia Y. Fechner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive and practical, this is a unique and multidisciplinary resource for the clinician caring for the girl or woman with Turner syndrome. Although approximately one in 2000 women are affected, many have not been diagnosed; as the advent of prenatal genetic testing becomes more prevalent, the diagnosis of Turner syndrome will be made much more frequently. There is therefore a greater need for this single source that provides the clinician with the information required to care for this multifaceted disorder. The opening chapters discuss the biology, genetics and current standard of care for females with Turner syndrome in order to provide proper background and context for the remaining chapters. The main section of the book, taking a body system approach, is comprised of chapters written by an expert in his or her subspecialty and will discuss pathophysiology and diagnosis, as well as therapeutic options. Reproductive, cardiac, renal, endocrine, neurologic, musculoskeletal, and sensory issues and symptoms associated with Turner syndrome are all covered in detail. Additional chapters describe current resources available to both caregiver and patient as well as future directions for research and management. Currently, there are no similar books on the market that take an all-inclusive, multidisciplinary approach in the care of individuals with Turner syndrome. As such, this book should be the standard of care for management of this challenging and multifaceted condition.
