Book Adventures in Toyland

Download or read book Adventures in Toyland written by Edith King Hall and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventures in Toyland (1897) is a children’s novel by Edith King Hall. The fifth of seven relatively unknown children’s novels by Edith King Hall is a quirky, fun, and incredibly original story for children and adults alike. Reminiscent of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” Adventures in Toyland is an underappreciated classic from a master of Victorian fiction. “All sorts of toys were to be found in that toy-shop. It was truly a place to please any child! A little girl, who had come to stay there with her aunt—the owner of the shop—and her little cousin, was always to be found amongst the toys; she was forever picking up and admiring this one, stroking that one, nursing another. All her spare moments were spent in the shop.” While playing in her aunt’s toy shop, a young girl has a magical encounter with a mysterious Marionette, who informs her that the world of toys is just as real as the world of human beings. Given the chance to speak with the Marionette for two weeks—after which the toy will go silent forever—the young girl enjoys tales of conflict and adventure set in a wonderful kingdom of creatures and toys alike. From the tale of “The Rabbit and the Mouse” to the story of Belinda the wax doll and Jack, “the curly-headed Sailor-Boy,” Hall never ceases to astound. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edith King Hall’s Adventures in Toyland is a classic work of British children’s literature reimagined for modern readers.

Download or read book Toons in Toyland written by Tim Hollis and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 1027 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every living American adult likely prized one childhood toy that featured the happy image of an animated cartoon or comic strip character. There is an ever-growing market for these collectibles, and stacks of books pose as pricing guides. Yet Tim Hollis is the first to examine the entire story of character licensing and merchandising from a historical view. Toons in Toyland focuses mainly on the post-World War II years, circa 1946-1980, when the last baby boomers were in high school. During those years, the mass merchandising of cartoon characters peaked. However, the concept of licensing cartoon characters for toys, trinkets, and other merchandise dates back to the very first newspaper comics character, the Yellow Kid, who debuted in 1896 and was soon appearing on a variety of items. Eventually, cartoon producers and comic strip artists counted on merchandising as a major part of their revenue stream. It still plays a tremendous role in the success of the Walt Disney Company and many others today. Chapters examine storybooks (such as Little Golden Books), comic books, records, board games, jigsaw puzzles, optical toys (including View-Master and Kenner's Give-a-Show Projector), and holiday paraphernalia. Extending even beyond toys, food companies licensed characters galore--remember the Peanuts characters plugging bread and Dolly Madison snacks? And roadside attractions, amusement parks, campgrounds, and restaurants--think Yogi Bear and Jellystone Park Campgrounds--all bought a bit of cartoon magic to lure the green waves of tourists' dollars.

Download or read book Inside Toyland written by Christine L. Williams and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-01-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I got my first job working in a toy store when I was 41 years old." So begins sociologist Christine Williams's description of her stint as a low-wage worker at two national toy store chains: one upscale shop and one big box outlet. In this provocative, perceptive, and lively book, studded with rich observations from the shop floor, Williams chronicles her experiences as a cashier, salesperson, and stocker and provides broad-ranging, often startling, insights into the social impact of shopping for toys. Taking a new look at what selling and buying for kids are all about, she illuminates the politics of how we shop, exposes the realities of low-wage retail work, and discovers how class, race, and gender manifest and reproduce themselves in our shopping-mall culture. Despite their differences, Williams finds that both toy stores perpetuate social inequality in a variety of ways. She observes that workers are often assigned to different tasks and functions on the basis of gender and race; that racial dynamics between black staff and white customers can play out in complex and intense ways; that unions can't protect workers from harassment from supervisors or demeaning customers even in the upscale toy store. And she discovers how lessons that adults teach to children about shopping can legitimize economic and social hierarchies. In the end, however, Inside Toyland is not an anticonsumer diatribe. Williams discusses specific changes in labor law and in the organization of the retail industry that can better promote social justice.
