Book Steam Vehicles of the Road

Download or read book Steam Vehicles of the Road written by Kevin Lomas and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-10-20 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My father, as well as being a engineering toolmaker, was a writer, writing articles for magazines. One of his subjects was steam engines, mainly road-use ones: 'Traction Engines'. As well as gathering some photos from many places, he also took many photos himself between the 1950s and mid-1970s and I have recently found some of them, both the ones he took himself and the ones he obtained and here they are in this photo album.

Book Steam Traction on the Road

Download or read book Steam Traction on the Road written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of how for more than a hundred years steam power played a vital role in the development of road transport. It all began with tentative attempts to build steam carriages by pioneers such as Cugnot in France and Trevithick in Britain, and in the early part of the nineteenth century there were significant attempts to develop steam carriages and omnibuses. That these attempts ultimately failed was largely due to opposition by road authorities and draconian legislation. Steam power did, however, find a real purpose in agriculture, where the traction engine was used for a variety of tasks from towing and working threshing machines, to ploughing. Once the value of the traction engine had been established, it soon found a use in many parts of the world for heavy haulage work and appeared in an exotic guise as the showman's engine. The latter was not only used to haul rides to fairgrounds but also powered a dynamo that could light up the fair at night. By the end of the nineteenth century, steam on the road took on a new life with the development of steam cars and trucks. For a time they vied the new internal combustion engine for supremacy on the road. The American Doble Company even developed a 100mph steam sports car. Ultimately steam lost the war, but steam vehicles survive and delight us still thanks to enthusiastic owners and restorers.

Book An Economic History of British Steam Engines 1774 1870

Download or read book An Economic History of British Steam Engines 1774 1870 written by Haris Kitsikopoulos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the diffusion trajectory of the second and third generation of British steam engines, the Watt and high-pressure models, covering the period 1774 to 1870. It begins by subjecting to econometric analysis the latest version of Dr. Kanefsky's database on 18th century steam engines coming up with an upward revision of the total amount of horsepower installed by 1800. Subsequent chapters delve into the determinants of the diffusion process through the third quarter of the 19th century relating to engines used both in mining and industry as well as transportation (railways, steam cars). The book's main contribution to the literature lies in drawing material from a very large volume of 18th- and 19th-century sources found in the Dibner Library of Rare Books, Smithsonian, and by utilizing a fair amount of technical literature pertaining to the economic factors driving the diffusion process. This great expansion of the empirical material has led to bringing multiple revisions to the work of other authors on the key aspects and determinants of the diffusion process. In conjunction with the publication by the author of an earlier monograph on the first generation of steam engines, the Newcomen model, the present study completes the task of offering the most comprehensive account of the preeminent and most strategic technology of the British Industrial Revolution. This book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of economic history and history of technology, interested in a better understanding of the industrial revolution in general and the role of British steam engines in particular.
