Book Statistical Portrait of the French speaking Immigrant Population Outside Quebec 1991 to 2006

Download or read book Statistical Portrait of the French speaking Immigrant Population Outside Quebec 1991 to 2006 written by René Houle and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report concerns French-language immigration outside Quebec and its recent evolution, focusing on its numbers, its geographic distribution and its demographic and social characteristics. This statistical portrait will mainly use the concept of first official language spoken (FOLS), which is now widely used as a criterion for a person's linguistic identity in studies on official language minorities. The Francophone immigrant population outside Quebec is comprised of two groups: those who have only French as their first official language spoken (French FOLS immigrants) and those who have both French and English (French-English FOLS immigrants). The Francophone immigrant population living outside Quebec is fairly small, both in absolute numbers and in relation to either the French-speaking population or the immigrant population as a whole. However, the relative weight of Francophone immigrants within the French-speaking population has increased, going from 6.2% to 10% between 1991 and 2006, while their weight within the overall immigrant population has varied more moderately, and in 2006 it was, at most, less than 2%. The majority of Francophone immigrants outside Quebec, 70%, are concentrated in Ontario. Furthermore, two-thirds of French-speaking immigrants live in three metropolitan areas: Toronto, Ottawa and Vancouver. In Canada outside Quebec, French-English FOLS immigrants, numbering 76,100 in the 2006 Census, are slightly more numerous than French FOLS immigrants, who number 60,900. In some cities, especially Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, this characteristic is more prevalent, with French-English FOLS immigrants outnumbering their French FOLS counterparts by almost two to one. The demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of these two FOLS groups are sometimes quite different. International immigration to Canada has undergone a rapid transformation in recent decades. Immigrants of European origin have tended to give way to immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America. In this regard, French FOLS immigrants stand out from other immigrants in that a large proportion of them come from Africa. One of the consequences of this trend has been to change the composition of the French FOLS immigrant population; in 2006, Blacks made up 26% of that population, compared to 5% of the other two immigrant groups.

Book excerpt: The transmission of French depends on both the type of couple in the household in which the children are living and the context in which French is used. [...] Under the leadership of the CIC-FMCs Committee, the initiative's objectives are to foster the recruitment and integration of immigrants into FMCs, to increase the proportion of francophone economic immigrants in FMCs from 1.1% (2011) to 4% in 2018, and to improve the settlement and integration of francophone immigrants. [...] This concept echoes the spirit of the new version of the Official Languages Act (1988), which stipulates, in section 32(2), that the government may have regard to "the number of persons composing the English or French linguistic minority population of the area served by an office or facility, the particular characteristics of that population and the proportion of that population to the total popul [...] The population of each francophone group (Canadian-born or immigrants) in each CT and each CMA was divided by the total population of the group living in the CMA, and the result was multiplied by 100 so that all the CTs for a given group in the same CMA sum to 100%. [...] On the maps, the darker the colour, the higher the number of francophones living in the CT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UNHCR assures us that never before have there been so many people on the move at the same time, mainly because of war-inflicted circumstances. Authors from different reputed institutions share their knowledge on this open-access platform to disseminate their knowledge at the global level. This book captures issues involved in meeting the challenges of people's movements in the twenty-first century. It explores attitudes of previously colonized people in a post-colonial period, analyses food insecurity in Canada, quality of life of elderly Turkish and Polish migrants in Germany, suicidal behaviours of immigrants admitted to an Italian-teaching hospital, and migration from a public healthcare perspective and points to the problem of tuberculosis among immigrants. Challenges of a more personal nature relate to second-language learning and acculturation of Brazilian migrants in Portugal and Asians as model minorities. Empirical evidence of why immigrants leave Norway is provided, and there is a discussion on the new actors of international migration (foreign students). This book closes with the voices of trailing women when it comes to the decision to emigrate. The collective contributions from experts attempt to provide updates regarding ongoing research and developments pertaining to migration.

African American indentured servants and free blacks migrated to Indianapolis. After the Civil War, southern blacks poured into the city. Fleeing war and political unrest, thousands of eastern and southern Europeans came to Indianapolis. Anti-immigration laws slowed immigration until World War II. Afterward, the city welcomed students and professionals from Asia and the Middle East and refugees from war-torn countries such as Vietnam and poor countries such as Mexico. Today, immigrants make Indianapolis more diverse and culturally rich than ever before.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is intended as an evaluation of the initiatives taken by the federal government in the area of immigration to OLMCs since the tabling of the 2003 report. [...] What this takes into account is the attraction that English can have on immigrants in Quebec, or used to have in the past.25 The issue of the definition and counting of immigrants who's FOLS is French and their inclusion in the statistics for the francophone group prompted many questions among the Committee members. [...] Statistics Canada treats double responses as follows: half the respondents in the French- English FOLS group are indexed as francophones and the other half as anglophones, so as to respect the relative frequency of use.26 This was the procedure decided upon by Treasury Board in the 1990s: The thing is that usually what the Treasury Board does is, and the approach that was adopted in the early 1990 [...] To respond to the recriminations of the FCFA, another order in council was published in August 2010, stating that the simplified census questionnaire of May 2011 will include additional questions on language in order to comply with the provisions of the OLA relating to offer of services to the population. [...] It would be in the interest of the federal government, the provinces and territories, and the communities, within the framework of their partnerships, to harmonize their definitions and variables and to coordinate the treatment of their statistics in order to obtain comparable data on immigration to OLMCs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration policy is a subject of intense political and public debate. In this second edition of the widely recognized and authoritative work The Making of the Mosaic, Ninette Kelley and Michael Trebilcock have thoroughly revised and updated their examination of the ideas, interests, institutions, and rhetoric that have shaped Canada's immigration history. Beginning their study in the pre-Confederation period, the authors interpret major episodes in the evolution of Canadian immigration policy, including the massive deportations of the First World War and Depression eras as well as the Japanese-Canadian internment camps during World War Two. New chapters provide perspective on immigration in a post-9/11 world, where security concerns and a demand for temporary foreign workers play a defining role in immigration policy reform. A comprehensive and important work, The Making of the Mosaic clarifies the attitudes underlying each phase and juncture of immigration history, providing vital perspective on the central issues of immigration policy that continue to confront us today.
