Book Statistical Inference of Properties of Distributions

Download or read book Statistical Inference of Properties of Distributions written by Jiantao Jiao and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern data science applications--ranging from graphical model learning to image registration to inference of gene regulatory networks--frequently involve pipelines of exploratory analysis requiring accurate inference of a property of the distribution governing the data rather than the distribution itself. Notable examples of properties include mutual information, Kullback--Leibler divergence, total variation distance, the entropy rate, among others. This thesis makes contributions to the performance, structure, and deployment of minimax rate-optimal estimators for a large variety of properties in high-dimensional and nonparametric settings. We present general methods for constructing information theoretically near-optimal estimators, and identify the corresponding limits in terms of the parameter dimension, the mixing rate (for processes with memory), and smoothness of the underlying density (in the nonparametric setting). We employ our schemes on the Google 1 Billion Word Dataset to estimate the fundamental limit of perplexity in language modeling, and to improve graphical model learning. The estimators are efficiently computable and exhibit a ``sample size enlargement'' phenomenon, i.e., they attain with $n$ samples what prior methods would have needed $n\log n$ samples to achieve. We provide a brief survey on our utilization and development of relevant tools from approximation theory, probability theory, and functional analysis.

Book Tools for Statistical Inference

Download or read book Tools for Statistical Inference written by Martin A. Tanner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unified introduction to a variety of computational algorithms for likelihood and Bayesian inference. In this second edition, I have attempted to expand the treatment of many of the techniques dis cussed, as well as include important topics such as the Metropolis algorithm and methods for assessing the convergence of a Markov chain algorithm. Prerequisites for this book include an understanding of mathematical statistics at the level of Bickel and Doksum (1977), some understanding of the Bayesian approach as in Box and Tiao (1973), experience with condi tional inference at the level of Cox and Snell (1989) and exposure to statistical models as found in McCullagh and Neider (1989). I have chosen not to present the proofs of convergence or rates of convergence since these proofs may require substantial background in Markov chain theory which is beyond the scope ofthis book. However, references to these proofs are given. There has been an explosion of papers in the area of Markov chain Monte Carlo in the last five years. I have attempted to identify key references - though due to the volatility of the field some work may have been missed.

Book Statistical Properties of the Generalized Inverse Gaussian Distribution

Download or read book Statistical Properties of the Generalized Inverse Gaussian Distribution written by B. Jorgensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 the idea of studying the generalized inverse Gaussian distribution was proposed to me by Professor Ole Barndorff-Nielsen, who had come across the distribution in the study of the socalled hyperbolic distributions where it emerged in connection with the representation of the hyperbolic distributions as mixtures of normal distributions. The statistical properties of the generalized inverse Gaussian distribution were at that time virtually unde veloped, but it turned out that the distribution has some nice properties, and models many sets of data satisfactorily. This work contains an account of the statistical properties of the distribu tion as far as they are developed at present. The work was done at the Department of Theoretical Statistics, Aarhus University, mostly in 1979, and was partial fulfilment to wards my M. Sc. degree. I wish to convey my warm thanks to Ole Barn dorff-Nielsen and Preben BI~sild for their advice and for comments on earlier versions of the manuscript and to Jette Hamborg for her skilful typing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use and misuse of statistics seems to be the signum temporis of past decades. But nowadays this practice seems slowly to be wearing away, and common sense and responsibility recapturing their position. It is our contention that little by little statistics should return to its starting point, i.e., to formalizing and analyzing empirical phenomena. This requires the reevalu ation of many traditions and the rejection of many myths. We hope that our book would go some way towards this aim. We show the sharp conflict between what is needed and what is feasible. Moreover, we show how slender are the links between theory and practice in statistical inference, links which are sometimes no more than mutual inspiration. In Part One we present the consecutive stages of formalization of statistical problems, i.e., the description of the experiment, the presentation of the aim of the investigation, and of the constraints put upon the decision rules. We stress the fact that at each of these stages there is room for arbitrariness. We prove that the links between the real problem and its formal counterpart are often so weak that the solution of the formal problem may have no rational interpretation at the practical level. We give a considerable amount of thought to the reduction of statistical problems.

Book Statistical Inference Based on the likelihood

Download or read book Statistical Inference Based on the likelihood written by Adelchi Azzalini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Likelihood plays a key role in both introducing general notions of statistical theory, and in developing specific methods. This book introduces likelihood-based statistical theory and related methods from a classical viewpoint, and demonstrates how the main body of currently used statistical techniques can be generated from a few key concepts, in particular the likelihood. Focusing on those methods, which have both a solid theoretical background and practical relevance, the author gives formal justification of the methods used and provides numerical examples with real data.

Professionals and practitioners working in various fields will also find some of the chapters to be useful. Although an extensive literature exists on each of these distributions, we were forced to limit the size of each chapter and the number of references given at the end due to the publishing plan of this book that limits its size. Nevertheless, we gratefully acknowledge the contribution of all those authors whose names have been left out. Some knowledge in introductory algebra and college calculus is assumed throughout the book. Integration is extensively used in several chapters, and many results discussed in Part I (Chapters 1 to 9) of our book are used in this volume. Chapter 10 is on Inverse Gaussian distribution and its extensions. The Birnbaum-Saunders distribution and its extensions along with applications in actuarial sciences is discussed in Chapter 11. Chapter 12 discusses Pareto distribution and its extensions. The Laplace distribution and its applications in navigational errors is discussed in the next chapter. This is followed by central chi-squared distribution and its applications in statistical inference, bioinformatics and genomics. Chapter 15 discusses Student's distribution, its extensions and applications in statistical inference. The distribution and its applications in statistical inference appears next. Chapter 17 is on Weibull distribution and its applications in geology and reliability engineering. Next two chapters are on Rayleigh and Maxwell distributions and its applications in communications, wind energy modeling, kinetic gas theory, nuclear and thermal engineering, and physical chemistry. The last chapter is on Gumbel distribution, its applications in the law of rare exceedances. Suggestions for improvement are welcome. Please send them to [email protected].

Book Models for Probability and Statistical Inference

Download or read book Models for Probability and Statistical Inference written by James H. Stapleton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, yet thorough, book is enhanced with simulations and graphs to build the intuition of readers Models for Probability and Statistical Inference was written over a five-year period and serves as a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of probability and statistical inference. With detailed theoretical coverage found throughout the book, readers acquire the fundamentals needed to advance to more specialized topics, such as sampling, linear models, design of experiments, statistical computing, survival analysis, and bootstrapping. Ideal as a textbook for a two-semester sequence on probability and statistical inference, early chapters provide coverage on probability and include discussions of: discrete models and random variables; discrete distributions including binomial, hypergeometric, geometric, and Poisson; continuous, normal, gamma, and conditional distributions; and limit theory. Since limit theory is usually the most difficult topic for readers to master, the author thoroughly discusses modes of convergence of sequences of random variables, with special attention to convergence in distribution. The second half of the book addresses statistical inference, beginning with a discussion on point estimation and followed by coverage of consistency and confidence intervals. Further areas of exploration include: distributions defined in terms of the multivariate normal, chi-square, t, and F (central and non-central); the one- and two-sample Wilcoxon test, together with methods of estimation based on both; linear models with a linear space-projection approach; and logistic regression. Each section contains a set of problems ranging in difficulty from simple to more complex, and selected answers as well as proofs to almost all statements are provided. An abundant amount of figures in addition to helpful simulations and graphs produced by the statistical package S-Plus(r) are included to help build the intuition of readers.

Book Multivariate Exponential Families A Concise Guide to Statistical Inference

Download or read book Multivariate Exponential Families A Concise Guide to Statistical Inference written by Stefan Bedbur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise introduction to exponential families. Parametric families of probability distributions and their properties are extensively studied in the literature on statistical modeling and inference. Exponential families of distributions comprise density functions of a particular form, which enables general assertions and leads to nice features. With a focus on parameter estimation and hypotheses testing, the text introduces the reader to distributional and statistical properties of multivariate and multiparameter exponential families along with a variety of detailed examples. The material is widely self-contained and written in a mathematical setting. It may serve both as a concise, mathematically rigorous course on exponential families in a systematic structure and as an introduction to Mathematical Statistics restricted to the use of exponential families.
