Book excerpt: The purpose of this document is to present an analysis of the standard algorithms used to convert the location of a point on the earth's surface from geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) to Universal Transverse Mercator Grid form (easting/northing), and back again. This reports treats only the problem of transforming UTM to Lat-Long and vice versa. The companion problem - which spheroids to use in different parts of the world - is not addressed. The computed terms are expanded in the standard series (See Army Tech Manual No. 5-241-8). These terms are then examined numerically to determine which are necessary for a given accuracy. The analysis shows how 1 meter accuracy in Northern and Eastern or in Lat-Long can be obtained. Keywords: Latitude; Longitude; Series expansion, Accuracy, Limitations. (edc).

Book excerpt: The problem of efficiently performing transformations from geocentric to geodetic coordinates has been addressed at previous DIS (Distributed Interactive Simulation) workshops. This paper extends the work presented at the 14th DIS Workshop. As a consequence of the new algorithm for geocentric to geodetic coordinate conversion, a subsequent conversion to Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates is made considerably more efficient. No additional trigonometric or square root evaluations are required and accuracy is not degraded.

Part I describes the nature of spatial datasets in R and methods for manipulating them. It also covers geographic data import/export and transforming coordinate reference systems. Part III applies the knowledge gained to tackle real-world problems, including representing and modeling transport systems, finding optimal locations for stores or services, and ecological modeling. Dr. Robin Lovelace is a University Academic Fellow at the University of Leeds, where he has taught R for geographic research over many years, with a focus on transport systems. Dr. Jakub Nowosad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geoinformation at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, where his focus is on the analysis of large datasets to understand environmental processes. Dr. Jannes Muenchow is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the GIScience Department at the University of Jena, where he develops and teaches a range of geographic methods, with a focus on ecological modeling, statistical geocomputing, and predictive mapping. All three are active developers and work on a number of R packages, including stplanr, sabre, and RQGIS.

This is done for ease of location on grid maps and in military coordinate listings. Hence, programs for the conversion of GP coordinates to UTM coordinates and inverse have been found necessary. Such programs have been available at NREC for a number of years, but certain limitations have made desirable an extension of the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of performing transformations from geocentric to geodetic coordinates has received an inordinate amount of attention in the literature. Numerous approximate methods have been published. Almost none of the publications address the issue of efficiency and in most cases there is a paucity of error analysis. Recently there has been a surge of interest in this problem aimed at developing more efficient methods for real time applications such as DIS. Iterative algorithms have been proposed that are not of optimal efficiency, address only one error component and require a small but uncertain number of relatively expensive iterations for convergence. In a recent paper published by the author a new algorithm was proposed for the transformation of geocentric to geodetic coordinates. The new algorithm was tested at the Visual Systems Laboratory at the Institute for Simulation and Training, the University of Central Florida, and found to be 30 percent faster than the best previously published algorithm. In this paper further improvements are made in terms of efficiency. For completeness and to make this paper more readable, it was decided to revise the previous paper and to publish it as a new report. The introduction describes the improvements in more detail.
