Download or read book Questions and Answers Based Upon the Standard Code of Train Rules for Single Track written by G. E. Collingwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions and Answers Based Upon the Standard Code of Train Rules for Single Track: For Use in the Examination of Trainmen Train rules should be brief and clear and so word ed as to leave no doubt as to their meaning. There should be as few rules in the book as possible. The Standard Code is a good example of brevity and is the best set of rules in existence today. Special instructions and Bulletins making addi tions to the rules should be used sparingly for they sometimes unnecessarily give the impression that the rules are inadequate. These additions are usu ally issued after some accident and are prompted by a commendable desire to prevent a repetition of it. But an accident is not necessarily an indication that there are not rules enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The American Railway Association has been guided by nearly half a century of painstaking experimenta tion in transportation problems, in the formulation of what is known as Rule Four, every word and sentence of which is freighted with vital meaning; yet the familiar controversies are still a source of annoyance and danger. It is of vital importance from the stand point oi the employe, the railroads and the public, that these misunderstandings give place to thorough har mony of viewpoint, impossible of disturbance, so that not a single divergence of opinion need occur. Trains receiving these orders will run with respect to each other to the designated points and there meet in the manner provided by the Rules. Note.--The revised Code allows what may be termed a consecutive meeting order--that is, directing a train to meet a number of trains at different stations In the same order. CHART NO. 7. Question Number 758. Should two orders be received, as shown in Chart No. 7', u'Jiat would be the effect? Answer. It is a space movement. "Meet" means meet, and orders remain in effect until fulfilled, superseded or annulled. One order does not supersede another, unless the words "instead of" are added; consequently No. 2 must remain at C, and No. 1 at B. If Order No. 1 were to be annulled, the trains would meet at B; if order Xo. 2 were to be annulled, they would meet at C. Question Number 7-59. May not No. 2 proceed to B when they receive the last order, on the supposition that No. 1 must not leave there and because Order No. 2 is a later order? Axswer. No; No. 1 is quite as likely to misunderstand and proceed to C under the first order, on the theory that as the words "instead of" do not appear in the second order, the first order governs. CHART NO. 8. Order No 1. No 2 will meet No 1 at C. Onler No 2. No 2 has right over No 1 C to A. No 2 has right orer all trains C to A. Onlcr No 3. Question Number 760. Book Chicago Street Railways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chicago Street Railways Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago Street Railways In the organisation of a municipal street railway department a very great deal depends on the arrangements that are made for the selection and training of conductors and motormen, and also on the standard of efficiency that is set up and maintained. From the separate print which I send you, you will get full details as to our methods of selection and training in Glasgow. The system we have adopted is working admirably. It will very likely be necessary for you at the outset to begin operations with men who have had experience in street railway work, but very soon your General Manager will find it to be to your advantage to engage young men and train them himself. We in Glasgow rarely engage a man who has been in street railway work before, and we have made it a rule never to reengage a man who has been in our service. A strict medical examination you will find to be absolutely necessary, and, as you will find no difficulty in obtaining applications from suitable young men, you will be able to fix the standard very high. We engage all our men on the understanding that, after serving for a few months conducting a car, they must, when asked, go through the motor school and learn to drive a car. If a man fails to qualify as a motorman, he has to leave the serum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
