Book excerpt: Tales of Two Cities compares both metropolises and soon discovers differences as well as similarities. American and German experts from different fields (for example historians, geographers, architects, journalists or Americanists) join our 'guided tours' through Chicago and Hamburg. They introduce the reader to the sister cities as migration magnets and spaces of different interests. They discuss challenges and chances of urban life, city planning, safety measures or media cities within an Atlantic context. The volume includes contributions in German as well as English. Claudia Schnurmann is a researcher at the Department of History at the University of Hamburg (Germany). Iris Wigger is a researcher at the School of Sociology at University College in Dublin (Ireland).

Book Marginal Linguistic Identities

Download or read book Marginal Linguistic Identities written by Dieter Hubert Stern and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present conference volume is an attempt to extend the scope of Eastern European linguistics by bringing together contributions from the fields of sociolinguistics and social anthropology hitherto neglected in the study of Eastern European languages. The collection of papers focusses primarily on cultural and linguistic hybridity in contexts of marginalization. Special attention is given to the language-identity nexus. All analyses are based on field research covering the spectrum from largescale questionnaire elicitation to participant observation. This reflects the editors' concern and hope for a renewed appreciation of field work by Slavic scholars. The volume is structured thematically, dealing withas diverse topics as cultural hybridity, linguistic identity in borderland communities, language death and genesis, code-mixing, as well as dialect shift under conditions of sociopolitical upheaval. Among the languages treated are Kashubian, Banat Bul-garian, Aegean Macedonian, Slovene, non-standard and contact varieties of Russian (Karelian-Russian, Old settlers' Russian, Russian lexifier pidgins and Russian foreigner talk), mixed lects (Surzhyk and Trasianka), and standard-dialect-continua in Ex-Yugoslavia.

This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book European Cities in the Modern Era 1850 1914

Download or read book European Cities in the Modern Era 1850 1914 written by Friedrich Lenger and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In European Cities in the Modern Era, 1850-1914 Friedrich Lenger analyses the demographic and economic preconditions of European urbanization, compares the extent to which Europe’s cities were characterized by heterogeneity with respect to the social, national and religious composition of its population and asks in which way differences resulting from this heterogeneity were resolved either peacefully or violently. Using this general perspective and extending the scope by including Eastern and Southern Europe the dominant view of Europe’s prewar cities as islands of modernity is challenged and the ubiquity of urban violence established as a central analytical problem.

Download or read book Territories of Faith written by Sven Sterken and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel and interdisciplinary perspective on post-war church building In the 1950s and 1960s, thousands of churches were built across Europe in an attempt to keep up with the continent's rapid urbanisation. This book addresses the immense effort related to the planning, financing, and construction of this new religious infrastructure. Going beyond aspects of style and liturgy, and transcending a focus on particular architects or regions, this volume considers church building at the crossroads of pastoral theology, religious sociology, and urban planning. Presenting the rich palette of strategies and methods deployed by congregations, dioceses, government bodies, and private patrons in their attempt to secure a religious presence in the rapidly modernising world, Territories of Faith offers a broad view of the practice of religion and its material expression in the fast-evolving (sub)urban landscapes of post-war Europe.

Book Homeownership Renting and Society

Download or read book Homeownership Renting and Society written by Sebastian Kohl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the financial crisis, the USA was inhabited by almost 70 percent homeowning households, in comparison to about 45 percent in Germany. Homeownership, Renting and Society presents new evidence showing that this homeownership gap already existed between American and German cities around 1900. Existing explanations based on culture, government housing policy or typical socio-economic factors have difficulties in accounting for these long-term cross-country differences. Using historical case studies on Germany and the USA, the book identifies three institutional domains on the supply-side of the housing market – urban land, housing finance and construction – that set countries on different housing trajectories and subsequently established differences that were hard to reverse in later periods. Further chapters generalize the argument across other OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries and extend the explanation to cover historical differences in homeownership ideology and horizontal property institutions. This enlightening volume also puts forward path-dependence theories in housing studies, connects housing with vast urban-history and political-economy literature and offers comprehensive insights about the case of a tenant’s country which contradicts the tendency towards universal homeownership. Providing an all-new historic-institutionalist explanation of the German–American homeownership gap, this title will be of interest to postgraduate students and scholars interested in fields including: Housing Studies, Sociology, Urban History, Political Economy, Social Policy and Geography. It may also be of interest to those working in housing field organizations and ministries.
