Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Jude, patron saint of hopeless causes, is the most popular saint of the American Catholic laity, particularly among women. This fascinating book describes how the cult of St. Jude originated in 1929, traces the rise in Jude's popularity over the next decades, and investigates the circumstances that led so many Catholic women to feel hopeless and to turn to St. Jude for help. Robert A. Orsi tells us that the women who were drawn to St. Jude--daughters and granddaughters of immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and Ireland--were the first generations of Catholic women to make lives for themselves outside of their ethnic enclaves. Orsi explores the ambitions and dilemmas of these women as they dealt with the pressures of the Depression and the Second World War, made modern marriages for themselves, entered the workplace, took care of relatives in their old neighborhoods, and raised children in circumstances very different from those of their mothers and grandmothers. Drawing on testimonies written in the periodicals devoted to St. Jude and on interviews with women who felt their lives were changed by St. Jude's intervention, Orsi shows how devotion to St. Jude enabled these women to negotiate their way amid the conflicting expectations of their two cultures--American and Catholic.

The campaign was everybody's joke, but Bill's true aspiration. He got depressed every four years because he wasn't running. A chance meeting between SK and Bill creates a compelling story of underdogs, infertility, wasted lives, impossible cases, mayhem, miracle, unlikely romance and faith's emergence from cynical, bitter disbelief. Book Jude and the Relatives of Jesus in the Early Church

Download or read book Jude and the Relatives of Jesus in the Early Church written by Richard Bauckham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an original and important contribution to the study of the earliest Palestinian Jewish Christianity. For the first time all the evidence for the role which relatives of Jesus played in the early church is assembled and assessed. Dr. Bauckham discusses a wide range of evidence, not only from the New Testament but also from the Church Fathers, the New Testament Apocrypha, rabbinic literature and Palestinian archaeology. The letter of Jude, in particular, proves to have much to teach us about the theology of the brothers of Jesus and their circle. It illuminates their exegetical methods and their Christology and shows both to have been influential contributions to the development of early Christianity. This study shows that this neglected New Testament book is far more important for the study of early Christianity than has hitherto been recognized. By setting the letter of Jude within the context of the evidence for the role of relatives of Jesus in the early church, new insights can be revealed into the letter and early Jewish Christianity.

Book The Epistles of St Peter and St Jude

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, among the dusty piles of old pamphlets stored away upon the upper shelves of the Union Theological Seminary library, I met with several works of Luther, in the original editions. The forbidding aspect of the page, with the obsolete spelling of its words, and its somewhat coarse typography, was rather an incitement to master it; for here was Luther, presenting himself to the eye of the reader just as, more than three hundred years ago, he presented himself to the eyes of thousands of his countrymen. Upon a partial perusal of the Commentary, I became satisfied that it would repay a more attentive study; and finding, upon investigation, that it had never been translated into English, I set myself to the task which had been so long neglected. -E. H. Gillett In 1524, Martin Luther published this book of sermons in German. In 1859, E.H. Gilette published this English translation of an original copy he found on a dusty shelf at Union Theological Seminary. In Luther's racy style, these essays are exactly as his local congregation heard him. Luther, of course, was at odds with the Catholic church on many issues stating for example, 'We could well endure it that those should call themselves priests whom the bishops and the Pope consecrate, and let them call themselves as they will, only see to it that they do not call themselves priests of God, for they cannot quote a word from Scripture in proof of it.' He argued that although some religious leaders preach that Christ's sacrifice is sufficient for salvation, they then counteract this proclamation by demanding various works of the law. They make the Gospel ineffective by their addition of required acts. This book's five hundred year old sermons are as relevant today as when Luther himself preached them in Wittemberg.

The universally applicable yet intimately personal messages she received from God are as much for us as they were for Catherine. We can read God's communications to his beloved daughter with detached awe or we can receive His messages to us through her writings. Do you long for certainty that Divine Providence exists in the midst of our chaotic world? Does your prayer seem too dry, or too routine? Have you sought guidance for the challenges of your life from unhelpful people or things? Or has pride kept you from humble obedience to the Church? If so, The Dialogue will provide consolation, encouragement, and hope.
