Book excerpt: For many in Israel and elsewhere, Benjamin Netanyahu is anathema, an embarrassment; yet he continues to dominate Israeli public life. How can we explain his rise, his hold on Israeli politics, and his outsized role on the world's stage? In Bibi, Anshel Pfeffer reveals the formative influence of Netanyahu's father and grandfather, who bequeathed to him a once-marginal brand of Zionism combining Jewish nationalism with religious traditionalism. In the Zionist enterprise, Netanyahu embodies the triumph of the underdogs over the secular liberals who founded the nation. Netanyahu's Israel is a hybrid of ancient phobia and high-tech hope; of tribalism and globalism - just like the man himself. We cannot understand Israel today without first understanding the man who leads it.

Book Gardening with Biblical Plants

Download or read book Gardening with Biblical Plants written by Wilma Roberts James and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1983 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Date palm and almond tree, cypress and pomegranate, wheat and cucumbers: these are just a few of the familiar plants mentioned in the Holy Bible. Shrubs, trees, vines, flowers, and food-bearing plants appear throughout the pages of the Scriptures, often used to emphasize a message in a Bible story. Now the gardener in the city or the countryside can become better acquainted with these very special plants by growing and tending them. Gardening with Biblical Plants, by Wilma James, is a complete guide to Scriptural plants and how and where to grow them. "Whether you garden indoors or out, you experience a sense of God's presence while working with plants that kept company with biblical people and become more aware of the important role plants played in the stories of the Scriptures," writes Ms. James. Gardening with Biblical Plants covers over 100 trees, shrubs, herbs, spices, water plants, flowers, and food plants. Ms. James prefaces her instructions for growing each plant with a discussion of habitats, the purpose it served in the Bible, and ways the plant was valued in biblical times. Bible verse that mention each plant are specified, and one verse is directly quoted. In addition to instructions for growing biblical plants indoors or out, Ms. James offers ideas for groupings in keeping with the Scriptures. Carefully prepared line drawings, by Arla Lippsmeyer, aid in identification. Experienced and beginning gardeners alike will not only find that Gardening with Biblical Plants enhances their appreciation of God's Word, but also provides concrete help in planting.

When Chris tells Kathryn about his feelings for Emily, a vivacious young woman he sees often at the Laundromat, Kathryn encourages her boyfriend to pursue this other woman--certain that her bond with Chris is strong enough to weather a little side dalliance. As Kathryn and Chris stumble into polyamory, [this book] tracks the tumultuous, revelatory, and often very funny year that follows"--

Book excerpt: In the midst of the Blizzard of 1978, the tanker Global Hope floundered on the shoals in Salem Sound off the Massachusetts coast. The Coast Guard heard the Mayday calls and immediately dispatched a patrol boat. Within an hour, the Coast Guard boat was in as much trouble as the tanker, having lost its radar, depth finder, and engine power in horrendous seas. Pilot boat Captain Frank Quirk was monitoring the Coast Guard's efforts by radio, and when he heard that the patrol boat was in jeopardy, he decided to act. Gathering his crew of four, he readied his forty-nine-foot steel boat, the Can Do, and entered the maelstrom of the blizzard. Using dozens of interview and audiotapes that recorded every word exchanged between Quirk and the Coast Guard, Tougias has written a devastating, true account of bravery and death at sea, in Ten Hours Until Dawn.

Book excerpt: Ariel Sharon, Israel's former Prime Minister, was perhaps one of the most controversial public figures in the Mideast. He was born in 1928 in a moshav--an agricultural community in which, unlike a kibbutz, residents own their own property--and was raised by parents who were not only ardent Zionists but also rugged individualists. His father especially was contemptuous of socialism and believed in individual enterprise, raising his son to be self-reliant and physically strong in order to prepare him for the inevitable struggle to establish a Jewish state. Sharon was perhaps best known as the organizer of what was called Commando Unit 101 and for his original ideas for the training of commando forces, which he later adapted to the training of larger, more traditional armies. During his military career he personally led many raids into Arab territory and has been criticized for his role in the destruction, in 1953, of some forty Arab homes--which he insisted he thought were empty and in which sixty-nine Arabs died. Later, in 1982, he was blamed also for allowing the Lebanese Christian Militia into a Palestinian refugee camp in which hundreds were killed. His political career was of course indelibly colored by his military exploits. What made Sharon tick? What kind of a man was he? How did his childhood and early life condition him to become a brilliant commander, controversial soldier and an as-yet-untested leader of a small democracy which is divided both within and without? This first biography in English--frank, but balanced--will perhaps answer some of the questions raised by his career both as a soldier and politician.
