Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sport Royal, I Warrant You!: Twelfth Night There are a number of little steamboats on Moose head Lake, which ply backwards and forwards, carrying freight and passengers. Upon a time - card, a sort of free and easy, go as you please schedule, we were told our boat would leave promptly at six in the morning. So on Tuesday we were up before five o'clock to see to our stores, baggage and hunting outfit being aboard on time, had breakfast in a hurry, first asking the landlord to tell the captain of the boat that we would be aboard at six and not to start without us. At six we were pacing the deck of the steamer, listening to the captain and pilot swearing at the engineer, who had not yet put in an appearance, and the boat couldn't well go without the engineer. Half after six came and we still waited; the whistle was blown repeatedly, but no sign of the man who handled the stop cocks. At eighteen minutes to seven the knight of the stopcocks was seen leisurely coming down a hillside as calmly as if he were an hour ahead of time. Then we made a start and crossed to another landing, where we took in tow a scow with four horses, a party of ladies and some lumbermen. At a quarter to eight we were off for the Northeast Carry, where we arrived about an hour and a half late, which hour and a half caused us an exciting time. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Sport Royal - and other stories: Look inside the book: The room was so full that I could not get a table to myself, and, seeing one occupied only by a couple of gentlemanly looking men, I made for it, and took the third seat, facing one of the strangers, a short, fair young man, with a little flaxen mustache and a soldierlike air, and having the other, who was older, dark, and clean-shaved, on my left. ...I happened to be carrying a red handkerchief myself, and, thinking either that something was in the wind or perhaps that my friends were having a joke at my expense (though, as I said, they looked well-bred men), I took it out of my pocket and, laying it on the table, gazed calmly in front of me, my eyes naturally falling on the fair young man. ...At one o’clock Lord Daynesborough was received by Prince Ferdinand, having requested an interview for the purpose of taking his leave, as he left for Paris by the five o’clock train. About Anthony Hope, the Author: Hope was born in Clapton, then on the edge of London, where his father, the Reverend Edward Connerford Hawkins, was headmaster of St John's Foundational School for the Sons of Poor Clergy (which soon moved to Leatherhead in Surrey and is now St John's School). ...3 He went on a publicity tour of the United States in late 1897, during which he impressed a New York Times reporter as being somewhat like Rudolf Rassendyll: a well-dressed Englishman with a hearty laugh, a soldierly attitude, a dry sense of humour, 'quiet, easy manners' and an air of shrewdness.

Book English Sport Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Sport Classic Reprint written by Alfred Edward Thomas Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sport With a view to subsequent appearance in book form I lately published in the Badminton Magazine, under the general title Masters of Their Arts, a series of papers intended to place on record the manner in which the chief English sports and pastimes were conducted and practised at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Masters of Their Arts seemed appropriate, for the reason that those from whom I sought contributions might be fittingly so described. I drew out a list of the authorities whom I considered best able to supply what I wanted, and was extremely fortunate in obtaining a favourable answer to my requests in every case. Perhaps it would be presumptuous on my part to say that I do not see how the list could well have been strengthened; that, however, is a matter I leave with no little confidence to the judgment of readers. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book The Life of a Sportsman Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of a Sportsman Classic Reprint written by Nimrod Nimrod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others.
