Download or read book Spiritus Maximus Issue 1 written by Kat Klockow and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary creatures are now the main population on Earth, with vampires, werewolves, mermaids, and others out in the open around the world. Humans, however, have become a thing of legend themselves. Spritus, or their ghosts, are the only remaining fragment of human life. A popular past time for young Monstrum is to go seeking such spirits. Sawyer (a vampire) and Munny (a werewolf) particularly love going spirit hunting. On one outing however, in an abandoned hospital, they come across the most mythical of beings- a human girl.

Book Gesta Danorum

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saxo (Grammaticus)
  • Publisher : Oxford Medieval Texts
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 019870576X
  • Pages : 1000 pages

Download or read book Gesta Danorum written by Saxo (Grammaticus) and published by Oxford Medieval Texts. This book was released on 2015 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saxo was probably a canon of Lund Cathedral, at that period a Danish cathedral, and lived at the end of the twelfth century. He was in the service of Archbishop Absalon, who encouraged him to write a history of his own country from the beginnings up to his own time, with a strong Christian bias. Starting with the myths and heroic tales of primitive Scandinavia, he devoted the first nine of his sixteen books to legendary material before dealing with the first kings of the Viking age and finished in 1285, after relating the earlier exploits of King Cnut Valdemarsson. The activities of the Danish kings were intimately bound up with the monarchies of Norway and Sweden; Cnut the Great, one of Saxo's heroes, whose empire stretched as far as Britain and Iceland, was ruler of both these countries. In the last books Saxo took particular concern to describe the campaigns of Valdemar the Great and his warrior archbishop, Absalon, against the Wends of North Germany. The work is a prosimetrum, that is, in six of the first nine books he inserts poems, which are intended to parallel specimens of old Danish heroic poetry in Latin metres. Saxo's Latin prose style is often complex, based as it is on models like Valerius Maximus and Martianus Capella, but he is a lively and compelling story-teller, often displaying a rather sly sense of humour, and an interest in the supernatural. He is the first author to give a full account of Hamlet, whose adventures he relates at some length, the elements of which in a great many respects correspond surprisingly closely with the characters and incidents of Shakespeare's play. Volume II of Saxo Grammaticus contains books 11-16 of Saxo's work, mainly dealing with the history of the first Danish kings.

Book Roman Imperial Policy from Julian to Theodosius

Download or read book Roman Imperial Policy from Julian to Theodosius written by R. Malcolm Errington and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007-10-16 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The division of the late Roman Empire into two theoretically cooperating parts by the brothers Valentinian and Valens in 364 deeply influenced many aspects of government in each of the divisions. Although the imperial policies during this well-documented and formative period are generally understood to have been driven by the religious and ideological aims of the emperors, R. Malcolm Errington argues that the emperors were actually much more pragmatic in their decision making than has previously been assumed. The division of responsibilities between the emperors inevitably encouraged separate developments and allowed locally varying and often changing imperial attitudes toward different forms of religious belief. Errington demonstrates that the main stimulus for action in this period nearly always came from below the level of the imperial government, and not from an imperial initiative. Extending the theory of Fergus Millar into the later empire, Errington argues that the emperors were fundamentally reactive to regionally supplied information, as Millar has asserted was the case for the High Empire. Thus, despite significant structural changes, the empire remained broadly traditional in its operations.

Book Rethinking Trinitarian Theology

Download or read book Rethinking Trinitarian Theology written by Giulio Maspero and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims at showing the most important topics and paradigms in modern Trinitarian theology. It is supposed to be a comprehensive guide to the many traces of development of Trinitarian faith. As such it is thought to systematize the variety of contemporary approaches to the field of Trinitarian theology in the present philosophical-cultural context. The main goal of the publication is not only a description of what happened to Trinitarian theology in the modern age. It is rather to indicate the typically modern specificity of the Trinitarian debate and - first of all - to encourage development in the main areas and issues of this subject.

Book Eager for Glory

Download or read book Eager for Glory written by Lindsay Powell and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The first biography of an important personality from the beginnings of Rome’s empire” (Graham Sumner, coauthor of Arms and Armour of the Imperial Roman Soldier). Nero Claudius Drusus Germanicus (Drusus the Elder) was the first conqueror of Germania (the Netherlands and Germany) and one of ancient Rome’s most beloved military heroes. Yet there has never been a full volume dedicated to his remarkable story, achievements, and legacy. Eager for Glory brings this heroic figure back to life for a modern audience. Drusus was a stepson of Augustus through his marriage to Livia. As a military commander he led daring campaigns by sea and land that pushed the northern frontiers of Rome’s empire to the Elbe River. He oversaw one of the largest developments of military infrastructure of the age. He married Marc Antony’s daughter, Antonia, and fathered Germanicus, Rome’s most popular general, and the future emperor Claudius. He was grandfather of Caligula. He died when he was only twenty-nine and was revered in death. Drawing on ancient texts, evidence from inscriptions and coins, the latest findings in archaeology, as well as astronomy and medical science, Lindsay Powell has produced a long overdue and definitive account of this great Roman.
