Book excerpt: Patrocino Barela emerged in 1936 as one of America's most important artists when he was featured in a show of Federal Art Project artists in New York's Museum of Modern Art. He was the first Mexican-American artist to receive such a high degree of recognition. His carvings in native juniper wood depict deep psychological and mystical insights into the human condition. Barela's art is not easily classified although his carvings display parallels to Romanesque art in their narrative quality and to Modernism in their sophisticated definition of space. There is also the aspect of the primitive, or of Eros, as Barela is in touch with the life force, the deepest level of humanity shared by all peoples and all cultures. In this way his imagery suggests the tribal art of Polynesia, Africa, Mesoamerica, and the pre-Christian Middle East. The artist made his home in Canon, New Mexico, outside of Taos. He never learned much about writing and he spent much of his life working on the farms and ranches of the Rocky Mountain states. He lived and died in poverty. His tragic death by fire took place in the workshop where he had carved some of the most profound art of our time. Driven by the undeniable need to create, Barela's art transcends time and place. His work comes from the roots of the land and Hispano society of New Mexico. The imagery he made, from the erotic to the tragic to the religious, shows individuals bearing the struggles of life. Barela eludes many traps into which the works of lesser artists fall, and achieves penetrating insights into our deepest emotions.

Book Uncovering Spiritual Narratives

Download or read book Uncovering Spiritual Narratives written by Suzanne M. Coyle and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All cultures use story as a way to make sense of life experiences. Yet for many, particularly in the western world, only a single story line is seen as the “real truth.” Using narrative therapy as a caregiving approach can help individuals uncover multilayered narratives that are far more complex and liberating. Coyle contends that not only are these more complex narratives more helpful in giving our lives meaning, they also critique the cultural discourses in which they arose. Drawing on both theological approaches and real life experiences, Coyle creates a contextual pastoral theology that helps caregivers find the power of God in people’s stories.

Book Visible Physical Manifestation of Spirits

Download or read book Visible Physical Manifestation of Spirits written by Tolka Scrolls and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-13 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the medieval period before Science had made its stamp on the world there were many practitioners of magic. Ceremonial Magic pre-Lodge magic variation, was considered the most powerful of all magic at that time, practiced from complex 'how to' manuals called grimoires. The grimoires were often annonymous or credited to unbelievable authorship such as King Solomon from the bible. Often people have attempted to trace the grimoire practices to earlier times to understand the mindset of the practitioners but there is no real clear origin that can be established which makes it near impossible. This book takes a unique look at visible appearance in the grimoires; drawing key qoutes and formulating them from the grimoires themselves in to the view of the Grimoire writers. What methods are there to make a spirit appear? Are they visions? Can a spirit become solid? These questions are discussed inside, by one of the current occult personalities pro visible and physical manifestation: Tolka Scrolls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When New Mexico became an alternative cultural frontier for avant-garde Anglo-American writers and artists in the early twentieth century, the region was still largely populated by Spanish-speaking Hispanos. Anglos who came in search of new personal and aesthetic freedoms found inspiration for their modernist ventures in Hispano art forms. Yet, when these arrivistes elevated a particular model of Spanish colonial art through their preservationist endeavors and the marketplace, practicing Hispano artists found themselves working under a new set of patronage relationships and under new aesthetic expectations that tied their art to a static vision of the Spanish colonial past. In A Contested Art, historian Stephanie Lewthwaite examines the complex Hispano response to these aesthetic dictates and suggests that cultural encounters and appropriation produced not only conflict and loss but also new transformations in Hispano art as the artists experimented with colonial art forms and modernist trends in painting, photography, and sculpture. Drawing on native and non-native sources of inspiration, they generated alternative lines of modernist innovation and mestizo creativity. These lines expressed Hispanos’ cultural and ethnic affiliations with local Native peoples and with Mexico, and presented a vision of New Mexico as a place shaped by the fissures of modernity and the dynamics of cultural conflict and exchange. A richly illustrated work of cultural history, this first book-length treatment explores the important yet neglected role Hispano artists played in shaping the world of modernism in twentieth-century New Mexico. A Contested Art places Hispano artists at the center of narratives about modernism while bringing Hispano art into dialogue with the cultural experiences of Mexicans, Chicanas/os, and Native Americans. In doing so, it rewrites a chapter in the history of both modernism and Hispano art. Published in cooperation with The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University

Book The Spirit of Saint Francis De Sales

Download or read book The Spirit of Saint Francis De Sales written by Jean–Pierre Camus and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SPIRIT OF a Saint we may, perhaps, regard as the underlying characteristic which pervades all his thoughts, words, and acts. It is the note which sounds throughout the constant persevering harmony which makes the holiness of his life. Circumstances change. He grows from childhood to boyhood; from youth to manhood. His time of preparation is unnoticed by the world until the moment comes when he is called to a public activity which arrests attention. And essentially he remains the same. In private as in public, in intimate conversation as in writings or discourses, in the direction of individual consciences as in the conduct of matters of wide importance, there is a characteristic note which identifies him, and marks him off apart even from other heroes of sanctity.
