Silver Bay, Oregon, a small coastal resort town with nearly a thousand residents, is home to three generations of women: Marnie, the long-widowed owner of a small gift shop; Van, her granddaughter, who is about to graduate medical school; and Stef, mercurial, difficult, and a brilliant artist who refuses to sell her work. When Stef discovers that Dale Oliver—the latest husband/paramour in a very long line—is trying to sell her work behind her back, she puts a stop to it and threatens to do the same to him. Shortly thereafter, Stef dies in an accident in her studio, and Dale shows up with a signed contract granting him the right to sell her work. Convinced that Stef was murdered in order to steal her artwork, Marie and Van—grandmother and granddaughter—decide to do whatever is necessary to see that Dale doesn't get away with any of it. This includes enlisting the help of the new stranger in town, Tony, a former New York City cop, who might be the only one who can prove it was murder and bring the killer to justice.

Book Poetic Form in Blake s MILTON

Download or read book Poetic Form in Blake s MILTON written by Susan Fox and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blake's two finished epics have been widely regarded as combinations of brilliant set pieces which yield to no systematic rhetorical criticism. Susan Fox contests this view, discovering in Milton an elaborate verbal structure that is fully congruent with the poem's philosophy. She has made the first full exposition of the formal principles of a late Blake poem, and it suggests that the late prophecies are as profound in their artistic structures as they are in their thematic ones. The author begins by tracing throughout Blake's poetry the development of the techniques found in Milton. She then provides an analysis in two chapters organized, as she perceives the poem to be, in parallel three-part units. Her examination reveals the exhaustive parallelism of the poem's books, as well as more local devices such as paired stanzas and circular rhetoric. The rhetorical pattern which emerges raises several major thematic issues which are treated in the concluding chapter. In demonstrating the coherence and control of the intricate formal patterns of Milton, this study provides a new measure of Blake's late verbal art. Originally published in 1976. Book excerpt: This book is intended to take the reader upon one womans adventurous lifetime quest to follow the teachings of the Father which ask us each to "Seek to love God with our whole heart, mind, body and souland our neighbor as ourselves". He has asked us to treat all other sentient beingseven "the least of these" as if we were doing these things for Him. If we seek to know Him, to become His beloved child and to follow Him as our Way, Truth and Light of our lives, He will walk and share with us as our Friend, Teacher, Savior and Beloved. This is the message of the authors first book entitled "Beloved". "Beloved" is a message of each persons ability to share a personal divine love relationship between our Beloved Lord and ourselves. "Beloved Spirit" continues our walk "in the still of the evening" with our Beloved beside us. If we walk with Him, we remain in the Spirit of the Beloved Spirit of the Father all our lives. He will show us many unseen and unknown things of the Earth and the Heavens. We will no longer see Him and His Light as an isolated pathway known only to a few. Our Beloved Fathers Love and Spirit is all-encompassing. He told us He would pour out His Spirit upon all flesh. He tells us He has sheep of many pastures. We are each a child of the All-Encompassing All That Is, the Manifold God who blessed His creation and His Son. The prophetic pages of this large epistle of His love for humankind as well as warning us of the "Signs of the Times". The Beloved Father is weeping. We will learn why. If we have love one for another, we will be able to complete an ecstatic picture of a new world in which the Spirit dwells within each of our hearts. He said He would never left us alone in dark and troublous times. "He leads and guides us clear through to a better place made with His own hand."

Book Thomas Love as Strong as Death

Download or read book Thomas Love as Strong as Death written by Dennis Sylva and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas appears only four times in John's Gospel, yet despite this he is crucially important in understanding the function of the Johannine message. Dennis Sylva provides the first major study which examines the paradox that Thomas is both opposed to a dominant theme in the Fourth Gospel - the eternal life that is a gift to Jesus' followers - and yet is in support of Jesus himself. Thomas appears to have a foot on both sides of the Johannine dualistic divide. He seems to be existentially at home on one side and yet ideologically at home on the other. No other character in John's Gospel so tenaciously hold on to companionship with Jesus while just as resolutely distancing himself from Jesus' central teaching. Thomas breaks down the barriers between the disciples (those who walk in the light) and the world (those who walk in the darkness) that John takes pains to establish. Sylva's new work demonstrates the importance of Thomas in fully understanding the message of the Fourth Gospel.

Book Laika s Window

  • Author : Kurt Caswell
  • Publisher : Trinity University Press
  • Release : 2018-09-18
  • ISBN : 1595348638
  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book Laika s Window written by Kurt Caswell and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laika began her life as a stray dog on the streets of Moscow and died in 1957 aboard the Soviet satellite Sputnik II. Initially the USSR reported that Laika, the first animal to orbit the earth, had survived in space for seven days, providing valuable data that would make future manned space flight possible. People believed that Laika died a painless death as her oxygen ran out. Only in recent decades has the real story become public: Laika died after only a few hours in orbit when her capsule overheated. Laika’s Window positions Laika as a long overdue hero for leading the way to human space exploration. Kurt Caswell examines Laika’s life and death and the speculation surrounding both. Profiling the scientists behind Sputnik II, he studies the political climate driven by the Cold War and the Space Race that expedited the satellite’s development. Through this intimate portrait of Laika, we begin to understand what the dog experienced in the days and hours before the launch, what she likely experienced during her last moments, and what her flight means to history and to humanity. While a few of the other space dog flights rival Laika’s in endurance and technological advancements, Caswell argues that Laika’s flight serves as a tipping point in space exploration “beyond which the dream of exploring nearby and distant planets opened into a kind of fever from which humanity has never recovered.” Examining the depth of human empathy—what we are willing to risk and sacrifice in the name of scientific achievement and our exploration of the cosmos, and how politics and marketing can influence it—Laika’s Windowis also about our search to overcome loneliness and the role animals play in our drive to look far beyond the earth for answers.
