Book Identification of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains

Download or read book Identification of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains written by Donald J. Ortner and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2003-01-06 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identicication of Pathological Conditions in Human Skeletal Remains provides an integrated and comprehensive overview of pathological conditions that affect the human skeleton. The primary objective is to assist those who conduct research on archeological skeletal remains in interpreting abnormal conditions that they might encounter in the course of their research. However, there is much that ancient skeletal remains can reveal to the modern orthopedist, pathologist, forensic anthropologist, and radiologist about the skeletal manifestations of diseases that are rarely encountered in modern medical practice. The medical historian will find information on the antiquity and early geographical distribution of many diseases. All of the major categories of disease that affect bone are reviewed on the basis of the literature on the radiology and pathology of these diseases. This review is followed by a discussion of the literature on the paleopathological cases thought to represent each of the morbid categories affecting bone. This book is based on extensive individual and collaborative research by the author and contributing authors on the known parameters of basic calcified tissue biology and modern skeletal diseases and their expression in antiquity. The monograph provides essential text and illustrative materials on bone pathology, which will improve the diagnostic ability of those interested in human dry bone pathology. It also provides time depth to our understanding of the effect of disease on past human populations. Key Features * Comprehensive review of skeletal diseases encountered in archeological human remains * More than 1100 photographs and line drawings illustrating skeletal diseases including both microscopic and gross features * Based on extensive research on skeletal paleopathology in many countries for over 35 years * Review of important theoretical issues in interpreting evidence of skeletal disease in archeological human populations

Book Clinical Pathology of the Placenta

Download or read book Clinical Pathology of the Placenta written by Martin Vogel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book performs a distinct introduction to the pathology of the placenta and its membranes, abortion material included, with the aim to facilitate and protect the quality of the morphological placental diagnostics by the pathologists. Seven chapters with coloured figures illustrating gross anatomy, development and maturation of the placenta explain the functional morphology in its clinical correlation of single and multiple findings for the pathologists, obstetricians and neonatologists. Moreover, the book contributes to a better understanding of pre- and perinatal investigations, maternal diseases, fetal outcomes and follow up of the newborns, as well as to the prevention of worse outcome in further pregnancies. The atlas intends to stimulate the interest for perinatal pathology and to contribute to a better interdisciplinary understanding of pathologists and clinicians, midwives and nurses.

Book Pathology of Rheumatic Diseases

Download or read book Pathology of Rheumatic Diseases written by H.G. Fassbender and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology is no longer the" dead science" it was reputed to be a few decades ago. The famous Canadian pathologist, William Boyd, expressed the newer attitude aptly when he stated that pathology should no longer be concerned simply with describing the" WHAT" of disease, but must be increasingly con cerned with the "HOW" and the "WHY". By this he implied that the preoccupa tion of the usual student of disease in the architecture of diseased tissues and descriptions of participating cells, their staining characteristics, etc. , must give way to study and understanding of the dynamics of each disease process, the pathogenetic mechanisms producing the changes in body tissues. This study is not limited simply to etiologic factors and portals of entry to the site of the lesion, but includes the physical and chemical factors involved, the variations of host response conditioned by immunologic reactions of differing intensities, enzymatic excesses or deficiencies, and a host of other variables of little known character such as the prostaglandins which definitely affect the disease process. No longer is the pathologist one who looks at sections of diseased tissue merely for differentiation of disease, but truly a pathologist studies disease.
