Hoke Smith, at Jefferson, Ga;, Tuesday, August 6, 1895 As long as gold, either from its intrinsic superiority as a metal, from its rarity, or from the prejudice Of mankind, retains such a prominence and value over silver as it hitherto has, a natural consequence Of this seems to be that its condition will be more stationary. The revolutions, therefore, which may take place in the comparative value of gold and silver will be changed in the state of the latter rather than that of the former. That species Of coin, Spanish silver dollars, has never had any settled or standard value, according to weight or fineness, but has been permitted to circulate by tale without regard to their advantage as a mere money of convenience, while gold has had a fixed price by weight and with an eye to its fineness. The greater stability of value of the gold coin is an argument of force for regarding the money unit as having been hitherto virtually attached to gold rather than to silver. Grains Of fine gold have corresponded with the nominal value of the silver dol lar, without regard to the successive diminutions of its intrinsic worth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factual and entertaining, compact and easy to follow, A Walking Tour of the University of Georgia takes the reader on a leisurely tour of the campus, its history and heritage. When the Georgia legislature chartered the nation's first state university in 1785, the town of Athens was a wilderness. The first university classes, in 1801, were held in a log cabin, and no permanent structure was built until Franklin College--now Old College--was completed in 1806. Since that time, the university has expanded vigorously. The buildings of the University of Georgia--spread over several miles and encompassing many architectural styles--range from the federal style of Demosthenian Hall and the classical design of Brooks Hall to the glass dome and marble of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. F.N. Boney's A Walking Tour of the University of Georgia guides the reader through the entire campus, offering easy-to-follow maps, photographs, and histories of most structures, as well as information about former students, college life, and the city of Athens.
