Book The Condition of Education in Rural Schools

Download or read book The Condition of Education in Rural Schools written by Joyce D. Stern and published by Improvement of Practice. This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the status of rural education and is intended to provide information to education researchers, policymakers at the federal and state levels, as well as others concerned about issues in rural education. Specifically, the goal is to increase federal policymakers' attention to rural education problems, promote improvements in rural schools, and stimulate further research on rural education. This report documents how rural conditions are sufficiently different from urban ones to warrant being examined independently, and it endorses the hypothesis that a single set of public policies may not adequately address educational issues in rural versus urban settings. National data, mainly from surveys by the National Center for Education Statistics, are synthesized covering the following topics: (1) economic and demographic context of rural education; (2) location and characteristics of rural schools and school districts; (3) relationship between the rural school and its community; (4) policies and programs benefiting rural education; (5) profiles of educators in rural schools; (6) effects of education reform in rural schools; (7) public school finance policies and practices affecting rural schools; (8) assessment of student performance in rural schools; (9) education and work experiences of rural youth; and (10) the future of rural education. The report contains numerous data tables and a section describing statistical data sources and methodology. (LP)

Download or read book Rural Education 1991 written by Deyoung Alan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, essays discuss and analyse rural schooling in its historical, social, and political contexts as well as its educational mission. Collections covering rural education in the United States are relatively rare, particularly texts that focus on available research literature in context, and many existing texts are written by educators outside of the University. This book covers historical and social factors, rural education in the field, and the future of American Schooling. The chapters comprise not only an airing of issues, concerns, and findings, but also a guide to scholarship in the areas covered. Included is a resource guide to information specific to rural education and rural special education.

Book Important Features in Rural School Improvement Compiled from Special Reports of Rural Superintendents to the Bureau of Education Bulletin 1914 No 25 Whole Number 599

Download or read book Important Features in Rural School Improvement Compiled from Special Reports of Rural Superintendents to the Bureau of Education Bulletin 1914 No 25 Whole Number 599 written by W. T. Hodges and published by . This book was released on 1914 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward the close of the school year 1912-13 the United States Commissioner of Education sent a letter to all school superintendents who have rural schools under their supervision, asking them to report to the Bureau of Education anything of unusual or special value that had been done in the schools during the past year or two. These superintendents were asked also to report any special methods which they had found successful in improving the efficiency of their rural schools. Approximately 3,500 letters were sent out, nearly one-half of which were answered. Many of the letters briefly enumerated a number of occurrences of local interest, such as an increase in the length of the school term, a bond issue for the new school building, or the introduction of a printed, course of study. Others gave fairly complete accounts of one or two things of general value to those interested in rural education. From the great number of answers received there have been collected for publication in this bulletin such selections as seem to contain suggestions of special value to other superintendents. The reports are grouped broadly under the following topics: (1) Administration and supervision; (2) instruction; (3) improvement of grounds and buildings; (4) socializing the schools; and (5) miscellaneous. Several letters containing reports on more than one subject are included in full. A study of the letters from which these abstracts are taken reveals improvement everywhere in the schools for country children. [Best copy available is provided.].

Book Educational Opportunity in Rural Contexts

Download or read book Educational Opportunity in Rural Contexts written by Sheneka M. Williams and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impetus behind this volume stems from reflections on commemorations of the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision. Brown turned 60 in May of 2014, and many special issues of peer?reviewed journals were dedicated to that anniversary. Unlike most special issues and volumes, we sought to highlight a smaller part of Brown, though no less significant. More specifically, we thought to develop a volume that focused on rural education in the aftermath of the decision. Most of the education policy and education reform literature caters to urban and suburban contexts, and very few academic books and journal articles—with the exception of research conducted by Craig, Amy, and Caitlin Howley and the Journal for Research on Rural Education—focus on rural education in the US. Thus, we wanted this volume to focus on the politics of educational opportunity in rural contexts. There is a paucity of rigorous research that examines how education policy affects the conditions of rural education. More specifically, research is scarce in examining the ways in which students in rural schools and districts have access to educational opportunities, although approximately one?third of all public schools are located in rural areas (Ayers, 2011). Educational opportunity in rural districts has been plagued by geographic isolation, loss of economic bases, and lack of capital (both financial and political) to voice the need for resources. To be clear, this volume does not present chapters that detail educational opportunity in rural districts and schools from a deficit perspective. Instead, chapters in this volume offer insight into both micro? and macro?level policies and practices that shape educational opportunities for students in rural schools and districts. As such, chapters in this volume investigate the “now” of educational opportunity for rural students and makes recommendations and suggestions for “later”. Given that, we are reminded of James Coleman’s (1975) thesis, “Education is a means to an end, and equal opportunity refers to later in life rather than the educational process itself” (p.28). This book will be organized into two distinct sections. The first section, comprised of chapters that examine educational opportunity in rural districts from a micro?level perspective, is devoted to chapters that broadly examine the implications of state and federal policy on educational opportunity in rural schools and districts. The second section, which includes case studies of rural districts in the American South, Appalachia, and the Northeast, takes a macro?level approach to examining educational opportunity in rural districts. Combined, chapters throughout the book provide readers with both an overview and a specific snapshot of educational opportunity in rural schools. Given the breadth and scope of chapters included in this volume, we believe the book adds tremendously to the education policy literature, as this vantage point has rarely been included in larger education policy discussions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Important Features in Rural School Improvement: Compiled From Special Reports of Rural Superintendents to the Bureau of Education Berks County, Pa. E. M. Rapp, superintendent, Reading. The slogans Of our county have been for years Stay on the farm, -and The country school of to - day for the country life of to - morrow. The result in the schools has been farm arithmetic, farm geography, elementary textbooks in agriculture, and a demand for the enrich ment of the course of study - for country children, that country Chil dren be taught in terms of their own lives. Realizing that whatever it is on paper, the course of study is largely the teacher, and that enrichment of the course must come principally through enrichment of the teacher, we have labored most for better - trained teachers in our schools. Book Education for Rural Development

Download or read book Education for Rural Development written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by UNESCO/FAO. This book was released on 2003 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international joint study by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and UNESCO's International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP) was conducted on education and rural development to review the status of the topic from the standpoint of public policies and the conceptual frameworks on which they are based and also to shed light on what may be called "good practice." The findings of the study are meant to serve not as models, but rather as points of reference for all those who are seeking ways of developing education in rural areas and contributing more effectively to rural development. Chapter I, "Education and Rural Development: Setting the Framework" (David Atchoarena and Charlotte Sedel), provides a contextual and theoretical introduction to the new rural development and poverty reduction thinking, as well as a discussion on the contribution of education to rural development. In Chapter II, "Basic Education in Rural Areas: Status, Issues and Prospects" (Michael Lakin with Lavinia Gasperini), the book reviews in depth the provision of basic education in rural areas and offers some policy directions for improvement. Further exploring a particular dimension of basic education, Chapter III, "Making Learning Relevant: Principles and Evidence from Recent Experiences" (Peter Taylor, Daniel Desmond, James Grieshop and Aarti Subramaniam), devotes specific attention to strategies linking the formal school teaching with students' life environment, including agriculture, and to garden-based learning. The intention is to provide updated information and new insights on much-debated aspects which are often associated with rural areas although their application is much broader. Chapter IV, "Strategies and Institutions for Promoting Skills for Rural Development" (David Atchoarena, Ian Wallace, Kate Green, and Candido Alberto Gomes), shifts the analysis from education to work and discusses the implications of the transformation of rural labor markets for skill development. A particular concern is the rise in rural non-farm employment and the need to enlarge the policy focus from agricultural education and training to technical and vocational education for rural development. This debate is taken further in Chapter V, "Higher Education and Rural Development: A New Perspective" (Charles Maguire and David Atchoarena), which considers higher level skills and the contribution of the tertiary education sector to rural development. Special attention is given to the reform of higher agricultural institutions and lessons based on case studies are provided to document good practice in institutional reform. Finally, Chapter VI, "Main Findings and Implications for Policy and Donor Support" (David Atchoarena with Lavinia Gasperini, Michael Lakin and Charles Maguire), concentrates on the main findings of the study and discusses policy implications and possible responses for donors and countries. (Contains 28 tables, 14 figures, and 64 boxes.).
