Book Spain and Portugal in the New World 1492 1700

Download or read book Spain and Portugal in the New World 1492 1700 written by Lyle N. McAlister and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish and Portuguese expansion substantially altered the social, political, and economic contours of the modern world. In his book, Lyle McAlister provides a narrative and interpretive history of the exploration and settlement of the Americas by Spain and Portugal. McAlister divides this period (and the book) into three parts. First, he describes the formation of Old World societies with particular attention to those features that influenced the directions and forms of overseas expansion. Second, he traces the dynamic processes of conquest and colonization that between 1492 and about 1570 firmly established Spanish and Portuguese dominion in the New World. The third part deals with colonial growth and consolidation down to about 1700. McAlister's main themes are: the post-conquest territorial expansion that established the limits of what later came to be called Latin America, the emergence of distinctively Spanish and Portuguese American societies and economies, the formation of systems of imperial control and exploitation, and the ways in which conflicts between imperial and American interests were reconciled. This comprehensive history, with its extensive bibliographic essay and attention to historiographic issues, will be a standard reference for students and scholars of the period.

Book excerpt: Drafts of letters and essays relating to the line of demarcation drawn by Pope Alexander VI, designating which parts of South America would be controlled by Spain and Portugal. Anville's undated draft, entitled "Discussion géographique sur la ligne de demarcation ...," contains a detailed summary of the geographic implications of the papal bull of Alexander VI of May 1493 and the revised agreement reached in the Treaty of Tordesillas in June 1494, which established the boundaries between the territories discovered by Spain and Portugal respectively, and the ways in which the interpretation of that division might affect the present colonies of each country. He discusses the longitude of the Cape Verde Islands--the point from which the boundaries were measured--and the different ways it was recorded on various maps. He also analyzes problems with measuring the 370 leagues defined in the Treaty of Tordesillas. Throughout, Anville refers to the maps of such cartographers as Pieter Goos, Manuel Pimentel, and the Jesuit missionaries of Paraguay. A second ms., undated, but signed by Anville, was probably prepared for a government minister to provide a succinct summary of the historical background of the line of demarcation of Pope Alexander VI; a description of the location of the boundary line; the respective claims of Spain and Portugal; and negotiations between the two countries, including the sale of 20 degrees by Charles V to the Portuguese. There are also drafts of two letters from Anville: one, dated Jan. 8, 1734 in Paris, is addressed to Father Du Halde, a Jesuit missionary, concerning Anville's preparation of a map of Paraguay and an accompanying explanation for Du Halde's Lettres édifiantes et curieuses (Recueil 21). In his analysis of how he created the map, entitled "Observations geographiques sur la carte de Paraguay," Anville explains that he used many earlier maps and information compiled by Jesuit missionaries in Paraguay. In a second letter and addendum, addressed to M. de la Roque and dated March 21, 1734, Anville states that he would like to advise the public of some changes in his analysis of the map of Paraguay which he prepared for Du Halde's recently-published book. He explains the reasons for the changes, and asks de la Roque to include the corrections in his book.

This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish and Portuguese South America During the Colonial Period, Vol. 2 of 2 The appearance of the Dutch as actors on the Brazilian stage arose, as might be expected, from the connection of the Low Countries with Spain and from that of Spain with Portugal. Their success in attacking the sources Of their enemy's supplies in the East led to the establish ment of a West Indian Company, the chief Object of which was to make conquests in Brazil. A eet was fitted out under the command of Willekens, who had under him the celebrated Peter Heyne. The religious intolerance from which the Dutch had themselves SO terribly suffered at the hands Of their Spanish rulers had taught them to be tolerant in such matters towards others, and to this circumstance they were now indebted for much valuable information respecting Brazil, which they received from the Jews who had taken refuge amongst them. Book excerpt: Winner of the Phi Alpha Theta Best Subsequent Book Award A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist The captivating and definitive account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake--the most consequential natural disaster of modern times. On All Saints’ Day 1755, tremors from an earthquake measuring approximately 9.0 or perhaps higher on the magnitude scale swept furiously toward Lisbon, then one of the wealthiest cities in the world and the capital of a vast global empire. Within minutes, much of the city lay in ruins. A half hour later, a giant tsunami unleashed by the quake smashed into Portugal’s coastline and barreled up the Tagus River, carrying countless thousands out to sea. To complete Lisbon’s destruction, a hellacious firestorm then engulfed the city’s shattered remains, killing thousands more and incinerating much of what the earthquake and tsunami had spared. Drawing on a wealth of new sources, the latest scientific research, and a sophisticated grasp of European history, Mark Molesky gives us the gripping, authoritative account of the Great Lisbon Earthquake disaster and its impact on the Western world—including descriptions of the world’s first international relief effort, the rise of a brutal, yet modernizing, dictatorship in Portugal, and the effect of the catastrophe on the spirit and direction of the European Enlightenment.
