Book The Great Famine in China 1958 1962

Download or read book The Great Famine in China 1958 1962 written by Xun Zhou and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning soon after the implementation of the policies of the Great Leap Forward of 1958-1961, when the drive to collectivize and industrialize undermined the livelihoods of the vast majority of peasant workers, China’s Great Famine was the worst famine in human history. In addition to claiming more than 45 million lives, it also led to the destruction of agriculture, industry, trade, and every aspect of human life, leaving large parts of the Chinese countryside scarred forever by human-created environmental disasters. Drawing on previously closed archives that have since been made inaccessible again, Zhou Xun offers readers, for the first time in English, access to the most vital archival documentation of the famine. For some time to come this documentary history may be the only publication available that contains the most crucial primary documents concerning the fate of the Chinese peasantry between 1957 and 1962. It covers everything from collectivization and survival strategies, including cannibalism, to selective killing and mass murder.

Book Famine and Survival Strategies

Download or read book Famine and Survival Strategies written by Dessalegn Rahmato and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1991 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do peasants do in the face of severe food crisis and ecological stress, and how do they manage to survive on their own? This study revolves around a case study conducted by the author in the awraja (district) in the Ambassel Wollo province in northeastern Ethiopia. This is in the region that was hit hardest by the 1984-85 famine, which Rahmato calls "the worst tragedy rural Ethiopia had ever experienced". The author also critically examines other literature on famine response. The focus of this study is on what happens before famine comes, and how the peasants prepare for it. From a wealth of evidence, the author concludes that the seeds of famine are sown during the years of recovery.

Book The Years of Hunger Soviet Agriculture 1931 1933

Download or read book The Years of Hunger Soviet Agriculture 1931 1933 written by R. Davies and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Soviet agricultural crisis of 1931-1933 which culminated in the major famine of 1933. It is the first volume in English to make extensive use of Russian and Ukrainian central and local archives to assess the extent and causes of the famine. It reaches new conclusions on how far the famine was 'organized' or 'artificial', and compares it with other Russian and Soviet famines and with major twentieth century famines elsewhere. Against this background, it discusses the emergence of collective farming as an economic and social system.

Book Famine Demography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tim Dyson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780199251919
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Famine Demography written by Tim Dyson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the important subject of famine demography. It describes case studies of the demography of historical and more recent famines in locations as far apart as Ireland, Finland, India, Burundi, Russia, Greece, Madagascar, and Japan. The authors concern themselves with significant issues such as the role of famines in controlling population growth in the past, the nature of interactions between starvation and epidemic diseases during times of famine, and the detailed demographic consequences of famines. In the latter category issues such as the age and cause-specific profiles of excess famine mortality receive particular attention. This is the only comparative volume of its kind. It is wide-ranging in time and place, but at the same time focuses sharply on a particular subject. Consequently its contents provide a unique understanding of famine demography.
