Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Literary Readings The material is arranged in a loose chronological order according to authors, some attention being paid to variety in subject-matter and literary form. It has been thought unwise to group the material according to types of litera ture, for two reasons. In the first place, the author always has been and the editor believes Will continue to be the logical unit for literary study in the schools, and it is a distinct disadvantage to have a writer's works scattered here and there throughout the book. In the second place, to group the selections by types or kinds of compositions is to lose the opportunity for presenting the historical development of our literature as a whole, and to impair the knowledge of its continuity of growth and the similarity of its subject-matter through the various periods. Moreover, comparative study in literary types may be almost if not quite as readily pursued When the material is arranged chronologically as When it is grouped by types. In the notes frequent suggestion has been made for comparative study, Which the teacher of more advanced pupils may carry out When supplementary work is deemed advisable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature of the South To give an introduction to the study of Literature as it has developed in the South leading to the fur ther study of the works of southern authors, is the purpose of this book. Literature and history go hand in hand, for, when all is said, the literature of a people is the expression of their life. T o understand Literature, then, we must understand its source. I have endeavored to indicate the characteristic of the succeeding periods of literary development, and to trace the influence of historical events upon the life and consequent expression of the people of the South. It has, of course, been impossible to discuss all southern writers. Only the more representative are treated with any fulness, and many names have been necessarily omitted. Thus, also, the lists given of writers and their works are representative and not exhaustive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. His career suggests the significance Of the time, for in his personality are the storm, the lightning and the swift changes Of war. Born in the midst Of the great civil struggle, he reached his most impressionable period in the stern hours Of the Reconstruction, was a college student when the New South called for a new generation, and entered manhood during that wide readjustment, North and South, that has brought forth a nation. He was sensitive in the highest degree, endowed with rare genius for expression, passionately fond Of the tragic and heroic, and drew from his environment the essence Of the Old South both in its glory and its doom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Literary Messenger, 1835-1836, Vol. 2: Devoted to Every Department of Literature and the Fine Arts Before entering upon the events of this war it will be proper to advert to the situation of the other Barbary States, and to notice the principal occurrences which transpired in them about this period. It would be uninteresting to recount all the attempts made by the inferior powers of Europe to preserve peace with the Barbary Regencies; sufficient has been said to demonstrate the vainness of the expectation that the rulers of those states would be restrained {rem any course which promised to be immediately beneficial to their interests, by regard for engagements however solemnly taken. The King of the Netherlands by a judicious display of firmness in 1824, succeeded in pre venting his country from being rendered tributary to Algiers; but he, as well as the sovereigns of Sweden and Denmark, continued to pay large. Book The Literature of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literature of the South Classic Reprint written by Montrose Jonas Moses and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the South The title selected for this book is one wherein a policy of exclusion could be systematically adopted; for, while there is a distinctive literature of the South, there is and has been much literary activity in the South which has contributed little or nothing to the sectional development. Many of the Southern manuals and estimates reveal too generous an inclination to include within their pages the names of those whom sentiment conjured up beyond the real measure of their importance. A local notoriety, a limited influence, an occasional inspiration, a sporadic paper - all these tend to swell into misguiding proportions a conscientious list of Southern writers. Many there have been of pleasing talents, and of exceptional powers as far as they have gone - but somewhere the amateur spirit soon reveals their momentary character. The greatest enemies of any literary movement are those who carry adulation in criticism to an excess. Southern literature has, until recently, found itself handicapped through a deplorable lack of any discriminating standards by which to judge it. However unified the fundamental interests of this country may be, the South - as well as any other section - has had a growth peculiarly its own. We would not deny the individuality of New England, even though that individuality be recognized as an element only in the evolution of the nation. Book Southern Student s Hand Book of Selections for Reading and Oratory Classic Reprint

Download or read book Southern Student s Hand Book of Selections for Reading and Oratory Classic Reprint written by John G. James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Student's Hand-Book of Selections for Reading and Oratory The South has been, from the foundation of the government, the peer, if not the superior, in political oratory, of any other section of the Union. In letters, too, it has done much - much more than it usually gets credit for; though that it has not been equally prominent in this field is due in part to the natural predilection of the Southern mind for statesmanship and arms, and largely to that former ease of living of the educated classes, which made literature as a profession distasteful, rather than to any lack of culture, taste, or genius, - for, witness the surprising growth in volume and value of its contributions to our recent literature, made under the exigencies of its new political and social regime. And yet to American school children the very names even of Southern orators, poets, and prose writers are unfamiliar, simply because the Readers and Speakers heretofore prepared have, from ignorance or design, been sectional or not national - composed of material of either Northern or English origin, to the exclusion of almost everything Southern. This, then, is the raison d'etre of the present volume, which, however, does not attempt a complete survey of Southern eloquence and letters, but aims chiefly to represent the "New South" in oratory, dialectic, poetry, and general literature, in the hope of supplying to our schools a compilation which will be found fresh and interesting, as but few of the pieces used have ever before been in any text-book. While intended for a Reader and Compendium of Recent Southern Literature for advanced classes, it will be found adapted to use as a Speaker in all schools and colleges. Book Library of Southern Literature Vol 14

Download or read book Library of Southern Literature Vol 14 written by Edwin Anderson Alderman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library of Southern Literature, Vol. 14: Compiled Under the Direct Supervision of Southern Men of Letters The purpose and plan Of this volume Of 'the Library Of Southern Literature' may be gathered by a reference to the table of contents. It does not contain the left-overs from the preceding thirteen volumes but serves rather as their comple ment. The history of a nation's literature or of a part Of a nation's literature cannot be adequately written if the com piler confines himself to the names of the known master builders. Such a method would exclude ballads and folksongs. It would exclude the countless short poems and incisive say ings, the songs and stories that wander unattached through literature but that none the less embody and in time te-create a people's ideals. Even when the name Of the writer is known, the poem may assume an individuality apart from that Of the poet. The poem lives but has not bulk enough to entitle its author to a place among poets. The Star Spangled Banner and Dixie, for example, reflect history and have helped to make history. They belong, therefore, to literature, though their authors may not be entitled to formal recognition among American poets. This volume, then, has an individuality Of its own. While it is related to the preceding volumes, it has also a certain completeness in itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
