Book The Rise and Fall of the Southern Alps

Download or read book The Rise and Fall of the Southern Alps written by Glen Coates and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Alps/Ka Tiritiri o te Moana are New Zealand's largest structural feature. Running north and south for most of the length of the South Island, they cross the Roaring Forties and divide the island into two distinct regions, east and west, each with its own unique climate, landscape and lifeforms. In this new book, geologist Glen Coates joins with the artist and author Geoffrey Cox to tell how the Alps were formed from ancient marine sediments, how they were uplifted to become mountains, and how they are being eroded down to produce the spectacular landscape seen today in the South Island. Even in just the past few million years vast blocks of land have been shunted incredible distances, and today frequent earthquakes remind us that this is a restless part of the earth where mountain-building is still in full swing. Rivers and glaciers, past and present, carve out a multitude of valleys and ranges, and wide plains have spread out at the mountains' feet. All this is told in vivid, non-technical language and copiously illustrated with colour photographs and artwork. The result is a book suitable for use in schools and by all who take an interest in their landscape and heritage.

Book Periglacial Preconditioning of Debris Flows in the Southern Alps New Zealand

Download or read book Periglacial Preconditioning of Debris Flows in the Southern Alps New Zealand written by Katrin Sattler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents one of the few studies so far that systematically analyses environmental conditions within debris flow source areas to determine their relative importance for debris flow development. Environmental site conditions, such as slope gradient and debris availability, influence the spatial and temporal distribution of debris flows in high-alpine areas. However, current understanding of these preconditioning controls is mostly qualitative and inadequate for debris-flow hazard assessments and climate change impact studies. The author's research investigates the role of frost weathering and permafrost in the occurrence of debris flows in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Analyses are based on an extensive debris flow inventory, documenting debris flow occurrence and activity over the last 60 years in selected catchments. Debris flow activity is compared to frost-weathering intensity estimates from two models, allowing the practical comparison of two competing frost-weathering hypotheses currently discussed in literature. Information on permafrost occurrence is based on a new distributed permafrost estimate for the Southern Alps, derived from climatic conditions at active rock glacier sites. This pioneering thesis provides empirical evidence that frost weathering promotes debris-flow formation. It further highlights the potential and limitations of regional-scale studies for advancing our understanding of debris-flow preconditioning factors.

In the Great Unknown he collects together personal accounts of his favourite trips into 15 geographical areas, ranging from Kahurangi in the north to the Fiordland in the south. Illustrated with his stunning photography, and with maps from Geographx, this will be a completely unique book that trampers and mountaineers will cherish, for it explores an important element of New Zealand tramping that goes to the heart of how we define our relationship with backcountry.

Book The Southern Alps

Download or read book The Southern Alps written by Craig Potton and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running from Nelson Lakes in the north to the ranges of Fiordland in the south, New Zealand's Southern Alps are the chain of mountains that form the spine of the South Island, and provide the backdrop to so much of its remarkable scenery. The Southern Alps is a tribute to these mountains from Craig Potton, New Zealand's pre-eminent landscape photographer. Collected over many years, these aerial photographs capture the magnificence of the tangle of rock, ice, snow and forested valleys that define the character of these mountains. The book includes images of all the major peaks, ranging from Mt Tutoko in Fiordland's Darran Mountains, Mt Earnslaw, Mt Aspiring, the high peaks of Aoraki/Mt Cook, north through to Mt Whitcombe and Mt Evans in the Central Alps, and on to Nelson Lakes. In addition to the plates, Craig Potton has contributed a thoughtful essay on how we look at mountains, and there are detailed captions about every photo and an essay outlining the natural history of this mountain chain. This is the ultimate book for mountain lovers. Beautifully produced in an oversized format, it presents the finest portrait of New Zealand's Southern Alps ever published.

Book Pre Mesozoic Geology in the Alps

Download or read book Pre Mesozoic Geology in the Alps written by J.F.v. Raumer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1001 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alps are an arched mountain chain stretching 1500 km between Vienna and Graz in Austria and Genova in Italy. They resulted from the collision of the African and Laurasian plates during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. The high standard of knowledge attained over the last 30 years by the working groups on "Alpine Metamorphism" is well known and helped considerably to recognize pre-Mesozoic elements in the Alps. In Part I of this book the subdivision of the major Alpine units and pre-Mesozoic pal inspastic reconstructions are covered before discussion of the pre-Mesozoic geology in Parts II, III and IV It is understood that the Mesozoic and later events overprinted pre-existing structures veiling the earlier history and the nature of protoliths. Although the Alpine overprint does not facilitate the recognition of older struc tures, pre-Mesozoic basement units were recognized during the first beginnings of geological observations in the Alps, about 200 years ago. Fifty percent of the Alpine domain is underlain by basement units that have been unconformably covered since Permian and Mesozoic times. This basement appears today in a complex pattern among the Alpine structures. The history of their discovery and explanation, parallel with a growing sophistication of research methods, are the subject of the introductory chapter of Part II.
