Il a conduit aux grandes découvertes de la physique des particules, à des échelles de plus en plus réduites, du méson en 1948 aux bosons intermédiaires en 1983, jusqu'à la mise en évidence récente du quark top (avril 1994). Les recherches, les conjonctures et les résultats qui ont jalonné l'histoire de la théorie quantique sont relatés dans cet ouvrage, à travers les articles publiés par leurs auteurs. Ces textes mettent en relief leur démarche heuristique originale, ainsi que les interrogations, les impasses, voire les controverses de l'époque. Chaque article est mis en perspective dans le contexte préalable à l'avancée théorique qu'il propose et qui se révélera décisive. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
