Book excerpt: The source and maturity of hydrocarbons in the Frio Formation of the Humble oil field, Harris County, Texas, from the East Texas Gulf Coast basin, were interpreted by combining the geochemical characteristics of the Humble oils and thermal evolution history of the Humble field. Ten oil samples from the Frio Formation collected from depths of 720-1569 m were analyzed using high-resolution whole-oil gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Temperature and stratigraphic data were used in the 1-D PetroMod2012 model to predict the potential source rock and reconstruct the geologic history of the Humble field. Based on Geochemical Inversion analysis, the Humble oils likely belong to the same genetic family and are sourced from a clay-rich, suboxic/oxic, marine-terrigenous transitional depositional environment. The oils were likely generated from mature source rocks which had already entered the main oils generation window with vitrinite reflectance ranging from 0.68% to 1.3% and expulsion temperatures of 126°C to 137°C. Combining the maturity biomarker properties with thermal maturity modeling, the Lower Wilcox could be a possible source of the Frio reservoired oils with generation and expulsion window of 29-11 Ma. The Lower Wilcox in the Humble field was formed in a deltaic depositional environment belonging to the Rockdale delta system, which is consistent with the transitional depositional source facies concluded from the geochemical inversion and further supporting the modeling result. However this does not rule out the possibility that the hydrocarbons of the Humble field were generated from the Midway, Eagle Ford, and Woodbine formations, which also deposited in nonmarine-marine transitional environment and are consistent with predicted geologic ages. Comparison of the Humble oils with the South Liberty oils (Banga et al., 2011) and Brazoria oils (Guo, 2004) show they belong to one single genetic family with minor dissimilarities likely caused by facies variations resulting in different terrestrial input. The South Liberty oils likely received more higher-plant organic matter, whereas the Brazoria oils contain more marine input and the Humble oils lie in-between.

Book excerpt: The source-formation environment and maturity of hydrocarbons from the Frio formation of the Blue Ridge field of the southeast Texas Gulf Coast Basin were determined by fingerprinting with high-resolution whole-oil gas chromatography (GC). Then, SARA fractionation into saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis were completed for study by biomarker inversion. PetroMod2012 was used to predict the potential source rock and geologic history of the Blue Ridge field. Blue Ridge oil has an initial heavy-hydrocarbon oil charge that was biodegraded, then followed by influx of a lighter-hydrocarbon oil. GC and biomarker analyses show the heavier-hydrocarbon oil fraction likely formed in a suboxic/oxic, marl-dominated, terrestrial dominant to marine transitional environment with mainly higher-plant input. It was generated in the main oil generation window with %Ro from 0.7 to 0.8% at the expulsion temperature of 122 to 130°C. The oils were likely sourced from the Middle Wilcox or deeper beds, which entered the oil window from 26 to 15 Ma. Comparing biomarker and GC analysis of the Blue Ridge oil with the South Liberty and Brazoria oils, indicates that they share the same genetic family. The minor differences between the three oils are that the South Liberty and Blue Ridge oils contain more higher-plant input, whereas, the Brazoria oil contains more marine input. Comparing the maturity level of the three oils, indicates that the Blue Ridge oil has the same range of maturity as the Brazoria oil, whereas, the South Liberty oil is similar to, but a little more mature than, the Blue Ridge and Brazoria oils. The similar maturation level of the three oils also supports that they share a common maturation history and thus a common source.

Book excerpt: Raccoon Bend field is a densely-drilled salt dome field in Austin County, Texas located within the southeast Texas Gulf Coast basin. Successful commercial drilling of the Wilcox Group at the Raccoon Bend field has presented a rare opportunity to study the organic geochemical attributes of hydrocarbons in Wilcox-aged reservoir in this basin. Molecular geochemistry of hydrocarbons was integrated with local stratigraphy, subsurface temperature and pressure, and reservoir brine isotope geochemistry to evaluate the source, maturity, and possible migration pathways of the hydrocarbons at Raccoon Bend field. Additionally, rock samples were collected from the Wilcox Group at Raccoon Bend field and were analyzed for total organic carbon, vitrinite reflectance, visual kerogen analysis, and stable isotopes of carbon. Organic geochemical attributes of the rocks, combined with the hydrocarbon geochemistry, were used for oil-source rock comparison at Raccoon Bend field. Geochemical investigation of hydrocarbons at Raccoon Bend field suggests that these oils belong to a single family, and therefore likely sourced from the same rock. Whole-oil gas chromatography and biomarker chemistry suggest that the chemistry of the oils are influenced profoundly by non-marine humic organic matter (Type III kerogen). Raccoon Bend oils correlate with other oils studied from younger reservoirs within the basin. However, there are several geochemical characteristics that suggest that the molecular chemistry of these oils is influenced by the immature coal-rich, high-energy proximal carrier-bed and reservoir rocks where the oils have accumulated. Pr/Ph ratios, n-C15+ distribution, and some saturate biomarker parameters show unusual characteristics for Gulf Coast oils that cannot be explained by source rock facies variations. Rock analyses confirm the Wilcox Group at Raccoon Bend is currently in the ‘early generative window’ and therefore the Wilcox Group is not responsible for the commercial quantities of oil and gas at Raccoon Bend. The low organic carbon content and the dominance of re-worked organic matter in the Wilcox rocks in this area suggest that the Raccoon Bend oils are not likely sourced from the Wilcox Group. It is possible that the Raccoon Bend oils are sourced from laterally more mature, more distal facies of the Wilcox or from older source rocks such as Midway, Austin Chalk, or Eagle Ford.

Book excerpt: The Pleasant Bayou geopressured-geothermal test wells in Brazoria County, Texas, display a prominent thermal-maturity anomaly in the Oligocene Anahuac and Frio Formations. Highly geopressured, more-mature shales are interbedded with hydropressured to moderately geopressured sandstones in the upper Frio and Anahuac. In contrast, shales and sandstones in the lower Frio, including the Andrau geopressured-geothermal production zone, are highly geopressured but exhibit lower thermal maturities. Vitrinite-reflectance data, supported by hydrocarbon-maturation data and anomalous concentrations of C5 to C-- hydrocarbons at Pleasant Bayou, indicate that the upper Frio was subjected to an extended period of hot, extremely saline, basinal fluid flow which caused the above thermal anomaly. Regional salinity studies (Morton and others, 1983) suggest that regional growth faults were the conduits for vertical basinal brine movement at depth. At shallower levels the upwelling waters migrated laterally through permeable sandstone-rich sections such as the upper Frio. Anomalously mature gasoline-range (C5-C-- ) hydrocarbons were introduced into the upper Frio by this process. Fluid influx in the lower Frio was probably limited by high geopressure, consequently maturity in the deep Frio section (greater than 14,000 ft) remained consistent with the regional geothermal gradient.

It is claimed that they are formed as a result of dipping of organic carbon-rich sedimentary layers and their thermal transformation by which hydrocarbons are generated. Conventional looking at the formation of hydrocarbons is based on buried in a sedimentation pool dead biomass of organisms and their long-lasting microbial degradation in an anaerobic environment with the simultaneous influence of temperature and pressure. This process creates a transformed organic material of high molecular weight called kerogen. About 1% of the live mass of the organic may be stored in kerogen in favorable conditions. Regardless of the type of kerogen, increasing temperature and pressure leads to the dissociation temperature or the cracking and forms a crude oil or natural gas. The secondary cracking at a higher temperature and pressure may result in the smallest particles of hydrocarbons, methane (Sephton, Hazen 2013). This theory does not answer the question of why there are massive accumulations of hydrocarbons reaching hundreds of millions of tons when their hitherto regarded as the mother layers, source rocks, is so little spread in the geological profile?

Understanding the burial, thermal maturation, and hydrocarbon expulsion histories of the strata in the onshore interior salt basins of the North Central and Northeastern Gulf of Mexico areas is important in hydrocarbon resource assessment. The underburden and overburden rocks in these basins and subbasins are a product of their rift-related geohistory. Petroleum source rock analysis and initial thermal maturation and hydrocarbon expulsion modeling indicated that an effective regional petroleum source rock in the onshore interior salt basins and subbasins, the North Louisiana Salt Basin, Mississippi Interior Salt Basin, Manila Subbasin and Conecuh Subbasin, was Upper Jurassic Smackover lime mudstone. The initial modeling also indicated that hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were initiated in the Early Cretaceous and continued into the Tertiary in the North Louisiana Salt Basin and the Mississippi Interior Salt Basin and that hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were initiated in the Late Cretaceous and continued into the Tertiary in the Manila Subbasin and Conecuh Subbasin. Refined thermal maturation and hydrocarbon expulsion modeling and additional petroleum source rock analysis have confirmed that the major source rock in the onshore interior salt basins and subbasins is Upper Jurassic Smackover lime mudstone. Hydrocarbon generation and expulsion were initiated in the Early to Late Cretaceous and continued into the Tertiary.
