Book Anatomy of Spirituality Portrait of the Soul

Download or read book Anatomy of Spirituality Portrait of the Soul written by Chander Behl and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 1032 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of spirituality, separated from its theological overburden, believes in the existence of a spiritual self, presumed to be distinctly separate from the psychological self. The spiritual eternal self, also known as the soul or spirit (sometimes supported by an overarching Spirit), is asserted to be operating behind the ephemeral self. This book takes a contrarian stance; it argues that the premise of the soul concept is obtained through the magic of language, maintained through the marvel of the brain’s biochemistry, and sustained through the mirage of the psychological juggernauts of the brain. The magic, the marvel and the mirage, together, bring about subtle shifts as the linguistic brain suppresses many psychological details, habitually applies mental templates such as inversions and dichotomies, and enhances its language by coining religious and spiritual metaphors. The consequence of these changes is that the usual flickering self begins to be impressed by itself, believing it is buttressed by something transcendental and eternal within: the soul or the spirit. The self, although indoctrinated during its formative years, also begins to assimilate and accept the opinion that the overwhelming weight of religious doctrines and dogmas, the overburden, signifies as the legitimate proof for the eternal soul.

Book The New Age of Soul

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ray S. Anderson
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2001-11-27
  • ISBN : 1579108156
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book The New Age of Soul written by Ray S. Anderson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-11-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Age of Soul, the broad appeal of new age spirituality is identified and defined, with special attention to the claim that the soul may be understood as both the repository of divine energy and a source of spiritual healing and hope. Through dialogue with sources and perspectives on the spiritual nature of the soul, the book attempts to win the respect and appreciation of the reader already persuaded by the claims and benefits of new age spirituality while, at the same time, convincing the reader who has suspicions and concerns about new age spirituality that a better alternative may be found. The book thus has a two fold purpose: first, to expose the inadequacy, indeed, the superficiality of new age spirituality through this dialogue and discussion attracting the attention and interest of the reader already influenced by this genre. Second, the author makes a case for a more traditional, orthodox, and biblical view of the soul and human spirituality so that the reader who is inclined toward new age spirituality will rediscover the more traditional biblical content of the soul and spirituality while providing the committed, more traditional Christian reader a tool by which to communicate a biblical faith with the growing segment of our population attracted toward new age spirituality. In its own way, this book is an apologetic for a more traditional Christian theology of human spirituality and self identity presented in a positive dialogue with new age spirituality

Themes of self-compassion, kindness towards those who are different, and gladness of spirit against the growing tide of narrow, rigid, fearful worldviews weave through the text. Written during her five-year sojourn in Ecuador, the author of Embracing a Beautiful God develops her playful-yet-serious philosophy of S-I-Z-E in a series of soul-expanding reflections, inspired by the vast beauty and personal challenges of living in the Andean country. The reader is invited to explore with the author the many dimensions of growing the soul through the four major sections of the book: The Beauty of Inner Immensity, Fat Soul Planet, Fat Soul Luminaries, and The S-I-Z-E of Hope. "Fat Soul is the result of an outlandish feast spread by an extravagant Lover who longs for us to awaken to the spaciousness of our own inner universe. It's so big you almost feel weightless." -Tim Carson, author of Six Doors to the Seventh Dimension. Fat Soul holds out the possibility of a life lived whole, lived large, lived with love and generosity. This is a book I will read again and again, and you should too!"-Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, author of God of Becoming and Relationship. This text should be read slowly as you would savor a Godiva chocolate, so that it might flavor your spirit and invite you to taste and see the beauty of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By all accounts, Dr. Jonathan Isaac Holt lived a terrific life. He was a distinguished professor and best-selling author, was greatly respected in his field, and was blessed with a wife and a child. However, under the surface, a cauldron of emotions stirred within him. Years before, he walked away from his true love, leaving him detached from the accomplishments that otherwise surrounded him. This detachment had a profound effect on his family, leaving Brenda, his wife, and Jean Louise, his daughter, to wonder what had become of their family. Tragedy struck when an accident took Brenda and Jean Louises lives, shattering any semblance of happiness that remained within him. While enduring immense grief, unfamiliarity, and longing for his lost past, he entered a deep state. When he emerged, he found himself somewhere he had never been before. Standing before him was Dante Alighieri, the supreme poet. Dante reveals to Dr. Holt that he will be taking him on a spiritual pursuit in heaven, reversing his role from Divina Commedia to become the attendant for Dr. Holts sojourn. Spirit and Soul: A Journey tells the story of Dr. Holts past, seen through multiple points of view, as it has brought him to the point he is at today and intertwining with revelations about the very nature of existence, both in the physical and spiritual worlds. Dr. Holt will be learning about lifes deep-seated mysteries, among them the nature of love, sin, free will, religion, faith, the Holy Spirit, and the meaning of life.

Book Body Soul Spirits and Supernatural Communication

Download or read book Body Soul Spirits and Supernatural Communication written by Éva Pócs and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a nuanced picture of the notions of body and soul held by the peoples of Europe through the soul concepts associated with the Judeo-Christian tradition and other religions and denominations; and the alternative traditions preserved alongside Christianity in folklore collections, linguistic and literary records. The studies also emphasize the connections between these notions and beliefs related to death and the dead, as well as questions of communication between the human world and the spirit world. The essays here focus on the roles notions of the soul and the spirit world play in the everyday life, religion and mentality of various communities; their folklore and literary representations, as well as the narrative metaphors, motifs, topoi and genres of ideas about the soul and about supernatural communication, along with questions of the relationship between narratives and religious notions. This book will appeal to researchers and students of religion, mythology, folklore and the anthropology of religion, as well as general readers interested in the humanities.
